Football Scoop potential candidates

Deion would be a thunder and lightning hire. I think the odds he would agree to it are low. But maybe he wants a challenge. He would win here and immediately turn this program around.

I have studied Deion. Deion was disciplined throughout his college and professional career and worked his ass off to win. He was a winner because he chose to make himself a winner. Deion is a teetotaler (I’m not). But he did not want alcohol, drugs or anything interfering with his performance. He values winning that much. I admire that.

Deion studied his opponents, and those were heavy weights like Jerry Rice. He made sure he was at his best every second the game was on.

He will recruit huge. And he would instill discipline and an understanding of how to win.

That’s is psyche GT needs.
The wild card IMHO is he would leave JSU for GT if we can convince him it is best for his son. Sims is no slouch, but frankly what big opening has a weaker QB situation than us? Nobody here would question at all his son being the presumable starter. And, IMHO, GT would be the easiest place to quickly surround him with a decent supporting cast and the best place to have many winnable games on the schedule. And a good place for NIL of the open schools.

He may not like the distractions of ATL for his son though. But his other sons went to big schools iirc.

Don't sell Sims short, he's a tremendous slouch

Deion would eat the transfer portal like apple sauce.

But the question is coordinators. Would he attract and retain a quality OC and DC? That's the question for any of these coaches. They need to be clinically obsessed with surrounding themselves with excellence a la "Level 5 Leadership" in Good to Great.

A chronic inability to admit mistakes and make changes was (along with timeouts) CGC's downfall. If the new guy can lead with humility and make strong hires, he'll succeed. We're in the best recruiting grounds in the country and that'll pay off when we find the right guy.

I'm cautiously optimistic with Cabrera (1) sending a message by firing the clown and his handler on the same day, and (2) outsourcing the search.

Depends a lot on if GT is willing to spend

That doesn't align with it being the magic pitch behind his recruiting success. Sounds like plain old coachspeak from the HBC at a HBCU.

Twenty 4*s includes this year's class. He improved in 2020 without any recruits. He had 5 four stars in the 2021 class. Two of those were WR. Best WR at JSU, right?

No, actually they had 5 receptions for 45 yards per ESPN. Best receivers were a 3 star senior xfer from W.Illinois and a 3 star senior xfer from U Ohio. They have 51 catches and 576 yards so far.

They had a 4 star DT. 10th DT in the country. Surely he would be dominating from day 1, right? Actually he played in 7 games, 14 tackles (3 solo) 2.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks, no stats or news for this year. They do have a 4(3) star Xfer from Missouri who is second on the team in tackles, but the leader is a 2 star and the third is a no star (WO) xfer from Tennessee. On offense his son was 4 star and has solid stats.

He is demonstrating every aspect of college football success with a very small dataset. But the real problem for GT is the mentality of fans that it is 1956 and we can demand a proven, successful BCS head coach and staff and pay for them.

There will be zero chance the guy we pick will be a proven, successful BCS coach. At least unless we do the unthinkable and give a toxic coach a second chance (I'm fine with that personally).

If we take a "proven" BCS HC, they will have a resume of Geoff level success and the fanbase will rightfully seek a divorce en masse. Definition of insanity.

We either have to hire a lower level coach (G5 with a "quirky"* offense that scares off P5 bluebloods) or a "D2,3,4" with proven success that deserves a P5 shot

OR

We take a chance on a guy who is a singular entity of unparalleled recruiting success and remarkable W/L record but on a very short track record. If the guy had a longer track record, he would be on every list there is.

*i.e. has significant elements of option rushing

Good research and thanks for digging in. First off, GT is made up of mostly 3* atheletes and we still have the expectation that we will demolish any FCS program. Is that because of coaching or the 3* athletes? Arent most FCS programs getting 2* and lower athletes? Deion also credits a lot of his success to his analysts (something other HBCUs don't have) but are the norm in FBS. It's hard to say how much of his advantage is from those analysts, but that advantage will 'lost' when he moves up.

Seeing a ton of a chatter on Jamey Chadwell on Twitter. Even their board is on fire, saying a deal is almost done. Even saw somewhere that he'll be in town Thursday to talk to GT while he's in GA for the GS game. There's even a GT guy on their forum claiming that the new AD in process who has strong ties to Chadwell. One of you guys doing this? :lol2:

Listening to Jox 94.5 this morning and they had Wes Durham on to discuss the GT openings...a few things to note and bear in mind guest don't often get to complete thoughts due to host interruptions. This is Wes's perspective and he claimed no inside scoop:

1. Obviously, GT cannot afford to go an pay a Coach $9 million a year, yet how much they are willing to pay this new Coach should be taken as an indicator as to how much The Institute is willing to invest to move the football program back to relevancy.
2. Is GT willing to make the necessary investments in facilities and staff - beyond just the head Coach?
3. GT doesn't necessarily need a Coach that understands the academic requirements at GT or who is coming from a school of similar requirements, but he will need a staff surrounding him that does.
4. Not sure his exact thoughts here as he was interrupted, but he pondered "is GT ready and willing to get into the game"? He asked this following a discussion about the impact of NIL, the transfer portal and how the sport is evolving at this time.
5. He offered no actual names for Coaching candidates.
6. Lastly, he is of the opinion a Coaching hire won't come until they hire the new AD, which he fees will be done within the next six weeks.

Nothing earth-shattering, but some interesting points he made.

Are you insane? Can you imagine the outcry from fans if he continued playing his own son over someone clearly better etc? That is a nightmare scenario

I recognize some of those names. Seems to be a GSU psyop. :bowrofl:

Maybe But still not a good reason to exclude him from the position IMHO

It's also fair to say his recruiting edge could go orbital in the ATL.

Balanced against the Hill of course, but I digress.

He would suck all of the air out of the room at local high schools and with the media. Build up to our Benz games could include his Falcons highlights, get those PSLs giddy about seeing him on the sidelines, take a chopper over to the Braves alumni day.

What QB do we have that is clearly better? Which QB's will be here next season given the transition and the portal? The Clemson transfer is the only one limited in his transfer options.
