Game Recap from a 1 time/yr attendee

Spent the day at GT with my son. We come down once a year for a game together. That was rough.

1) our OL is just terrible. They are slow, weak, don’t seem to know their assignments, and they don’t play with any energy. They seem like a major weakness on tv but watching in person was eye popping. I went to school during Key’s time here and I appreciate him as an alum but I don’t see any coaching evidence with this group.

2) what exactly was Thacker watching? The 3 points at the end of the half were on him entirely. We are not nearly talented enough in the secondary to rush 3 and give even a crap QB like Burmeister all that time.

3) our secondary is bad I’m not sure I can blame Thacker. Between burton and our head coach, you’d think we wouldn’t suck so hard. Clearly we have guys here who shouldn’t be on a D1 field. Sorry but Oliver and King are not even serviceable backups

4) I wouldn’t blame Gibbs and Sims if they left. They are both in a different talent universe. Gibbs fortunately will have his NFL shot regardless. when Sims has any time at all, the kid is great to watch. Throws and runs so well.

5) Pnode was bailed out by Sims and McGowan on that 1st half TD in the north endzone. His 2nd and 3rd down calls were putrid. He repeatedly tried to best VT to the edge and it was never working.I don’t know why he’s calling screens with this team’s talent level. Coordinator wise, it was GT’s worst game in my memory.

6) for a head coach with special teams and secondary emphasis, don’t we especially suck in those areas?

7) man, it’s sad to see where attendance has fallen. Our fans just don’t care to show up anymore, and who can blame them? If I lived local and it’s a noon rainy game, I probably stay home too rather than see this product on the field

8) the reunion donations to the academic school really put our revenue issues within the athletic association in perspective. $70mm raised this year from 50, 30 and 25 year reunion classes. Check out our endowment, and compare it per capita to other schools. Then look at our athletic donations, and I think you’ll see where the priorities lie

First, thank you for coming to the game and bringing your son. Tech sure needs more people who do that.

Second, thank you for your thoughtful comments.

Of all the problems Tech has with football, I think attendance is the most concerning. It shows apathy has set in. I've seen Tech be bad before, but I've never seen attendance be so low or apathy be so high. I used to get very upset when we played bad. Now, I'm so used to it that I don't get upset.

It gets harder and harder for me to have confidence in what the coach says. I'd like to see him succeed, but we are constantly out-coached in a very weak conference.

Yesterday after the game, he was asked what he had to say to the fans. He said all the people he was thinking about were in the locker room. That was disappointing.

I'm not too confident in the athletic director, either.

At times this year, I've seen progress. But, it seems like we take one step forward and then two steps backward. I sure hope we take some steps forward soon.

Based on the ever decreasing attendance and enthusiasm, I would say that he has totally lost the fans, and he's too stupid to realize it.

To be brutally honest, the overall experience yesterday was just not up to par.

I have some decisions to make between now and March.

I think I posted about the misery of my experience in another thread. I love my seats, but for the first time, I was thinking about moving to the West so I at least wouldn’t be surrounded by opposing fans. Most of the long-time season ticket holders around me have quit coming or moved elsewhere, so my section is full of opposing fans or indifferent neutral parties. It doesn’t make for a fun gameday.

where did they get that clown? 1st and 15, gain 7 yds now 2nd and 8. Says it’s a 2 yd gain. Missed 1st downs repeatedly. Could not even have done a HS game before.
That pissed me off as well. “Three yard gain, it’s 2nd and 7.”

No, dumbass, it was an 8 yard gain.

Two thoughts.
1) Given how poorly we are playing why are there no changes in the starters? We have players who are clearly failing to perform their assignments.
2) Replacing Key would not only potentially help the OL play but it would free up money to upgrade the defensive backs coaches,

That last play brought to you by Budweiser, the King of Beers! Back to you on the sidelines Randy Waters!

Agreed. Our OL is atrocious.

good luck doing that with the endless string of noon games. Game times need to be set at the start of the year so everyone can plan accordingly. This one week notice of game time where 90% of them are nooners kills the ability to plan and travel.
I like nooners.

But then again, I'm straight.

Announded attendance for yesterday's game was 35,543. In a stadium with a capacity which is listed at 55,000. That is not good.

I mentioned Utah in another thread here. Another school located in a large city in their state's capital which is only the second favorite football team in their own state, and with a similar-size stadium to BDS (BYU is more popular and has a bigger stadium than Utah . . . sound familiar?). Utah is often viewed as a commuter school. They drew 51,922 against UCLA last night (and won, 44-24). In a stadium with a capacity which is listed at 51,444. That is pretty good.

Utah is good, but not great. They're 5-3. But that place was LOUD and rocking and the announcers repeatedly mentioned how it was a tough place for visiting teams to play. And I'm sure it's a great environment for selling Croots who come to their games. Oh how I wish BDS was like that!!! And I believe it can be. Other than not winning, I'm not sure why it isn't. Can't we find 50,000 in Georgia who are not dwag fans? As crappy as they are, I would love to attend a bunch of games if I did not live 650 miles away.

The good news is that AFAICT ESPN stopped publishing the attendance numbers with their game summaries. You have to Google it. So unless a recruit was actually there (which I would not recommend), or went to the trouble of Googling it, they wouldn't know how bad it was.

I felt bad when the D was backed up against the Wardlaw Center and Tre Swilling tried to get the lower west and south end zone to make some noise. At that point, I could totally understand the players saying “F it, what am I doing this for?” when there’s no crowd support.

(But by the same token, I can kind of understand the crowd checking out when we get repeatedly dragged up and down the field by a mediocre VPI team, too.)

Yesterday I said that it would be much easier to get the crowd in it if the defense did t give up 7 yards every first down.

Hell, I saw at least 4-5 folks at the game WEARING UGAg gear.

But we gotta strip the ball from the ball carrier on first down.

Money Down would be fantastic if we had UGA's defense. As it is, it just reminds the opposing offense "oh yeah, we need a first down".

It will be humiliating to hear that during the UGAg game if things get out of hand, which is likely.
Let me guess. You love money down until you start to worry about some mutt fan making you feel humiliated by it. Lol

Based on the ever decreasing attendance and enthusiasm, I would say that he has totally lost the fans, and he's too stupid to realize it.
Not totally. He still has a few ardent supporters, that were convinced he’d be the savior, still defending him rigorously despite any real successes. Some people just can’t admit when they were wrong.

If the ACC stays bad Collins has an outside shot of getting Tech to a .500 season or two and MAYBE making it a little less daunting for the next biggest rebuild in the history of football. If Tech is willing to find a spend money on a decent staff.

Well, you'd guess wrong, idiot. I said it would be OK if we had a defense like UGAg's. If we had a great defense like theirs and decided to call 3rd down money down, that would be acceptable because it would have grown organically from us having a great defense. Having a poor defense and calling it money down doesn't make a bit of sense being we are one of the worst 3rd down defenses in the country (109th ranked)

There is certainly one of those that we as fans can actively help correct. I bet if the whiny little girls on this board would go to the games instead of sitting on their couches eating Cheetos we could get #7 fixed.

I've learned that me not showing up at games and redirecting my A-T Fund money into WBB/VB/AD Initiative and keeping the wallet firmly clasped closed at FB is the one negative reinforcement that registers and is understood at the GTAA. I was at the NIU game this year. I'm not coming back or turning on the money spigot until staff changes are made. Period. What you call whiny girls not showing up I call fans exerting leverage on the GTAA to force action. Enjoy the UGAg debacle this year. I'll call an audible for a glass and one ice cube and enjoy watching other more competitive rivalry games that day instead. If by some unlikely turn there's a Thacker or Burton or Dixon or Key firing before then ... well ... perhaps I'll see you there after all.

So you said I was wrong but I was actually right. The money down stuff arrived with Collins. But NOW you don’t like it because of mutts. Lol

When the play is right in front of us those signs block my view. They usually pull them down before the play starts, but not always. I have to yell at them to put the stupid signs dow.

Catch 22. They can’t fire the coach unless you give them money. You won’t give them mo he unless they fire the coach.

And fans who only show up when the team is winning suck ass and give blow jobs for beer money in the truck stop parking lot.
