Gators fire McElwain

The ceiling at all places is a national championship. FHS, Wazzou is in the CFP discussion these days.

At some places, this is a realistic and attainable goal. Obviously every program desires that, but not every program can actually get there. Out of Penn State, Florida, and A&M, Penn State is at worst the second best positioned to get there.

ATM has more money and better recruiting. UF recruits better and has an easier path. Without Franklin, Penn State is on the MSU plane, just behind Wisconsin.

It'll be Chip Kelly or Dan Mullen. The fans down there won't tolerate shit offense any longer.

All three schools are paying similar salaries. Looking at just the last two recruiting classes, they're all bunched together pretty closely. "Easier path" seems fairly subjective to me. I wouldn't consider having to deal with the Saban empire in order to make the playoff an easy path. Would much rather go through Meyer and Harbaugh, especially since you can lose to one of them and still have a decent chance to make the playoff.

I guess we'll see, though. Maybe you're right and Franklin is the coach at one of those schools next year, but I wouldn't count on it.

Franklin is an outstanding recruiter. He could easily set up the Dabo model at ATM with big money coordinators.

UF is a little more tricky. But he could put together monster classes.

Sounds like it. No point in arguing if you think Duke can win a national championship in football.
No, you're right, there's no point to this at all. But shall we continue to exchange posts anyhow? It sort of passes the time along the way to the grave, don't you think?

I hear Jim McElwain has some time to spare, in case either of you are interested. amirite?

They’re gonna end up hiring a third or fourth choice who they have to fire in 4 years. The Florida UAA is retarted.

Yeah, no argument from me that he could be relatively successful at either school, but that seems to be what he's already doing at Penn State, and he has had them in the playoff discussion two years in a row. And he's making big time money doing it. Penn State's football revenue is on par with both Florida and Texas A&M (revenue from the last three years was about $6 million below Florida and $8 million above A&M), and they play in a larger stadium than either. It's not an apples and oranges comparison.

It probably doesn't hurt PSU that he's from, and played in, PA.

Straight out of the Samuel Beckett playbook. Nice. :coffee2:

I wonder if there's already discussions being had with potential coaches, since this could back fire. If Florida ends up with a lesser known hire, it'll look really bad on ...had to google the name of the current AD. Dude's wikipedia entry doesn't even reflect his job at UF.

lesser known hire like McElwain :)

Mark Schalbach is reporting that UF is going to use the maybe false death threat claims to argue that the firing was with cause. That seems like a real stretch to me (though granted I haven't seen the actual contract language). But if they've concluded that it was plausible, then suddenly the decision becomes a lot easier. Maybe they would've given him the rest of the season or another year without the death threats claim... but they saw an opportunity to get a fresh start *and* save a buncha dollars.
