Mark Schalbach is reporting that UF is going to use the maybe false death threat claims to argue that the firing was with cause. That seems like a real stretch to me (though granted I haven't seen the actual contract language). But if they've concluded that it was plausible, then suddenly the decision becomes a lot easier. Maybe they would've given him the rest of the season or another year without the death threats claim... but they saw an opportunity to get a fresh start *and* save a buncha dollars.
