Right. It's three AD's faults that he went through four (five?) DC's in 11 years. I can't even remember all of them at this point. Wommack, Groh, Roof, Woody...did I miss any? His recruiting was poor even early on so scapegoating the AD's for that doesn't make sense, either. He got an IPF and upgraded locker rooms during his tenure.
By your logic CGC let Choice and Coleman leave because he wanted to, not because he couldn't match their offers. If you believe that then things are starting to make sense.
PJ had the new locker room for one year. And he begged for more help in recruiting. Year after year.
PJ didn’t recruit for defense … I love this trope.
Let’s go back in time, shall we?
2009 — 4 star DT JC Lanier. Plus Rod Sweeting, Dieke, Jemea and Julian Burnett.
2010 — 4 star DT Denzel McCoy. 4-star DB Ryan Ayers. 4-star DE Anthony Williams. Plus Isaiah Johnson in that class. Plus Louis Young and Quayshawn Nealy. And some low rated 3 star OLB we all know and love as Sneezy.
2011 — 4-star LB Jabari Hunt-Days. Plus Jamal Golden and Chris Milton.
2012 — 4-star DT Francis Kallon. Plus high 3-star DT Pat Gamble and D.J White. And a low 2 star kid named Gotsis.
2013 — Robbins, Akins and Commissiong at DL or DE. All 3-stars.
2014 — 4-star DB Step Durham
2015 — A.J. Gray (state player of the year) and Anree Saint-Amour. Both 3-stars
2016 — 4-star DE Jordan Woods. Plus 3-star LB Emanuel Bridges. And a mid range 3-star DT named Brandon Adams.
2017 — 4-star DBs Gentry Bonds, Tre Swilling and Kaleb Oliver, and 4-star LB Bruce Jordan Swilling. And a 2-star DB who went to the Senior Bowl.
2018 — 4-star DB Jaylon King, 4-star LB Justice Dingle, plus 3-star DB Charlie Thomas and 3-star DB Juanyeh Thomas.
That doesn’t include guys like KeShun Freeman, Corey Griffin, TK Chimedza and Jordan Domineck.
But, by rivals ratings, that’s 14 4-star guys on defense in PJ’s tenure, five of whom were going to be DEs or DTs. During that same time, he had 4 4-star recruits on offense (BJ Bostic, JT, Graham and Yates)
Some got hurt and never saw the field. Some played and were going to be good and got hurt and never played again. Some never stuck it out.
If PJ didn't care about defense, he'd have kept Wommack. He wanted a DC he could turn the defense over to and not have to worry about what was going on over there. He may finally have found that with Woody. But we'll never know.
I'll go back to another PJ story. Presser following the 98 I-AA championship game loss to UMass. Southern gave up 55 points - and the offense turned the ball over seven times that day. But PJ said "I promise you we will better on defense next year."
PJ spent that following spring almost exclusively with the defense. In 1999, against non-FBS opponents (played and lost 48-41 to Oregon State), they gave up 16 points per game. That's 13 other FCS teams and one DII team.
