Hire Brent Key

Brent Key will be the head coach somewhere next year. He earned that opportunity and some program will be excited by the hire. But ADs like to recruit and hire their choice, not keep the current interim coach as a consolation prize. For that reason, I think it will most likely be a clean slate, unless negotiations don’t go well and he can’t make something happen that excites the donors. I’d like to see Coach Key be successful, but doubt it will be at Tech, at least not in the near future.
Disagree. No one outside of GT fans know who Key is. No one outside of us is paying attention to GT football. Heck, the majority of folks still think Johnson is our coach. If Key doesn’t get our job he’ll be a staff coach somewhere else. He may be a head coach in the future but won’t be next year.

Nor has anyone heard of Coastal Carolina before Grayson McCall...nor Chadwell, for that matter.
So McCall is the only reason they are winning? If you look at his coaching resume, it's hard to find any complaints. The dude is a straight up winning coach, and it's not because of just one winning QB. It's a total team effort.

Not sure how we’d give Key a valuation as a head coach, but isn’t it that coach’s responsibility to recognize weaknesses and turn those into positives?
As a head coach, the emphasis is no longer offensive or defensive in nature, but managing and making decisions that improves all aspects of the team.
I don’t have a coach preference one way or the other, but objectively speaking, Key deserves credit for changing what was a dumpster fire conversation into a positive football conversation for the most part.
Yes, but Key has literally never touched the defensive side of the ball ever as a coach. How would he know what to make better or worse?

There are 5 programs in the United States that can reliably beat uga and Clemson annually. I want 8-4 and to make the dwags öööö their pants having to end the year with a feisty, dangerous GT team
8-4 won’t make UGAg scared… I can promise you that now. It’s so crazy that 3.5 years of a trash coach will have people begging for mediocrity instead of excellence.

What’s crazy is that you’re proving my point with this statement. He got the first ever CSU 10 win season, and he did it twice. He has had 3 straight dominant seasons with Coastal. I don’t see how you’re not seeing how wrong you are here.

Are the 3 seasons more a function of Chadwell or McCall? Not sure why you aren't able to grasp this.

He'll likely be HC at UAB if Tech goes with the Chad.

AD's with openings at non-P5 schools are 100 percent paying attention to a P5 interim coach who may become available.

And no one in a position to hire a D1 coach thinks Paul Johnson is still our coach. It's been four years.

Maybe some fans do, but fans don't make coaching decisions.

Going to be a busy week at the Edge Center. Imagine Batt and Cabrera will be talking daily. If I am being an objective J Batt this is my thinking:

1. Tech wins on Saturday, Key gets a contract along with a piece of pumpkin pie and a bourbon neat in the locker room.
2. Tech stays within 10 points, Key gets the nod. No other coach has been able to do that at Sanford this year.
3. Anything bigger and need to see a solid game plan and the team stay in the game all 60 minutes (and we have to put points on the board). Do we sneak into a bowl game? Decision becomes tougher.
4. Blowout scenario. Does Chadwell seem interested and enthusiastic? Can the finances afford the hit if he can't start winning in two years? Does a more affordable Key contract give me a free peek next year and more financial leeway.

Personally, I am rooting for Key. I think he knows the school and this team better than anyone. I believe he gets us to 6+ wins next season.

Pinning a hiring decision on how a sub-.500 team starting its third string QB plays on the road against the undefeated national champions who blow out top 10 teams doesn't make much sense to me.

I don't think next Saturday has any bearing on the decision at all. If you use it as a reason not to hire Key, then you didn't really want him in the first place. Which is fine and understandable.
