How long does it take to install an Offense?

We weren't an attractive option converting from the 3O, but I think we're going to look much better the next time we go fishing for a coach, whether that's at the end of this year or down the road. It's been reported that other coaches have been sniffing around the program already.
What are you basing this on? Genuine question. tbh it can be hard, during any time spent on this board, to tell exactly how miserable I'm supposed to be. If we are a currently or inevitably more attractive place than I'm under the impression we are, that is great. But I think considering the shakeup we will have in the athletic department, AD on down if Collins should goof hard and get fired, I would say it may be hard to predict how attractive Tech may be in four months or more.

Everything depends on what Cabrera chooses to do and who comes in as AD.

Exactly. I dunno, I won't pretend I know anything about what motivates a cfb coach or anyone else. I feel confident that the team will get better sooner or later, but I do not know whether to expect that we can stop beating ourselves as a program, off the field. So many programs across the country, with more money resources than Tech can ever dream of having, are in some kind of internal war which creates instability and leads to silly öööö like we've seen in Knoxville and Austin. How are we supposed to do better/different?

FWIW I have heard the same. GT is being followed closely by folks in case Collins gets canned. Apparently its a more desirable job now than 4 yrs ago following the option.

I remember watching PJ’s first spring game and thinking it was going to be a depressing season. It seemed like we fumbled every other play.

But by week 1, we looked like we knew what we were doing (even though we didn’t know much and still fumbled a good bit).

So I think it depends on the discipline of the players.

I think the way a football team plays depends, more than anything else, on the Head Coach. The Head Coach might not be able to determine how many games a team wins, but the Head Coach sure determines how a team plays. Things like discipline, use of timeouts, penalties, preparation and other things are all on the Head Coach. If the Head Coach knows what he's doing, that's where it shows up. Not having those things is why a team gets beaten by teams with less talent, loses close games to teams with similar talent, and gets totally humiliated by teams with more talent.

I don't think any "big time" head coach is coming here. We're not that attractive and don't have the money to pay all that much.

Closest to a big name we could get is Mullen. And even he is probably out of reach.
Yeah. This makes any sense. Fire a guy who can recruit (CGC), and hire a guy in Mullen who refuses to recruit. Quite possibly the dumbest take yet.

CKS after the UGA-UF game on recruiting as it relates to Mullen and his lack of recruiting:

"Guys...if you don't recruit, there is no coach out there that can out-coach recruiting. I don't care who you are."

"The best coach to ever play the game, better be a good recruiter because no coach is going to out-coach players."

It’s desirable based on ATL / Georgia, until coaches realize the lack of support from the school + lack of interest in the state. This has been noted by Football Scoop and pretty much confirmed by Rick Neuheisel on XM Radio. Despite what some want to believe, per Neuheisel he was offered the job by D-Rad after a 6 hour meeting in Baltimore, before it was denied by the board due to the NCAA Tournament betting lawsuit while at U-Dub. Neuheisel ended up winning that case. Something that wouldn’t matter now. During the meeting, D-Rad explained that despite the ATL / GA recruiting base, the academic hurdles in place present a major challenge most don’t understand. However, D-Rad had worked out an alternative by using GSU or JUCO to get around some classes at GT.

This was a 30+ minute conversation on GT / Neuheisel being honest about the GT job on XM Radio “Full Ride” in June. This originated from Childers mentioning schools that used to be relevant, that aren’t now. In his words “Everyone used to know the GT on the helmet as a power in CFB……”

Sounds like Paul Johnson was the backup plan. Which in the end was the best decision for GT. Neuheisel failed at his alma (UCLA) a short time later before Mora Jr took over.

This is the funniest ööööing öööö I've heard in a while.

So you think there's a coach out there who is willing to come to tech and recruit to the level of UGAy? Do you understand that there's more issues to solve than just "hire a good recruiter"?

This is why we need to go back to the option/other scheme that gives us a schematic advantage. One that takes 2 and 3 stars in traditional offenses but are 4 and 5 stars in our scheme. There's your recruiting problem solved (especially on the line okay). You then break the bank in a lights out defensive coordinator.

I'm personally hoping Bohannon or Monken is hired next year.

Yeah, the guy who got Miss State to #1 in the country.
Was that Mullen that did that or CGC? I’m kidding but that Miss State defense wasn’t bad. And before people say the orange bowl, he didn’t coach. Wouldn’t mind Mullen honestly.

It's a good thing for miss state he wasn't coaching the defense, because we would have waxed them even harder.

And when did the process start for Chip Long?
I think expecting instant results is out of the question. I expect to see misreads and such, against Clemson. We will beat WC, just from a talent level. The test will be the following 3 games. After the 4th game, going on the 5th game, the offense should have worked most the kinks out. That is what I expect. Do, I expect to run up and down the field? No. I expect an average offense.

Ultimately, I want to see improvement, with the offense, as the season goes along. I don't expect us to throw up large numbers against UGA. However; we should be able to score points, in the meat of the season. I am more interested in Duke, UVA, FSU and VT. If the offense is misfiring, come those games, we in major trouble. Not only would the team be in major trouble, the whole coaching staff, should be in major trouble. With that said, I understand the offense scoring, does not equate to wins. We still have a porous defense. I am guessing the O will need to score 30, to win most games. I could be wrong, but the defense is what I am more worried about, than the offense.

No one likes to acknowledge this, but we were middle of the pack last year with Sims. I think we averaged something close to 30 PPG when he started. Our stinkers came at the hands of Yates save the KSU game. Sure, Patenaude deserved to get canned, but give him a healthy Sims again this year and he's likely putting 30+ on the board each week. So the question is, what's it gonna take for Long to be seen as an obvious upgrade? If he has Sims all year, I think it would have to be 35 PPG. Do you guys realize that would have put us at #3 or #4 in the conference last year? How likely do you think that is?

My point is our success this year likely comes from improvements on D and not O. If you're scoring 30 PPG with a decent defense you will win more than you lose.
Sims also didn't play against our 3 toughest (by far) opponents, so it's natural his numbers are going to look better when he only played mediocre ACC teams.

Of course it is. The bar to make fans happy is significantly lower following a bunch of 3-win seasons vs following a coach that played for multiple ACC championships and Orange Bowls.

It really bothered me we didn’t see that in the last few years. I mean the thing I loved about the option is when the b back hit the line almost immediately.

I used to hear it from PJ all the time:
"It's hard to simulate the speed at which the offense hits you."

That isn't the reason.

True, but a lot of those points with Sims were in the first and 4th quarter of games, if my recollection is right. It's like he would script a couple good drives to open the game and then have a dry spell for a couple quarters, then score some in garbage time. I guess the point is that our ppg last year was a bit misleading and we have significant room for improvement on both sides.

this is a fair take. We struggled making offensive adjustments all season. The quick passing game and simple RPO scheme should benefit Sims this year as well.
