I know I’m old fashioned…

I knowwe got some bad calls but vandy had 8 penalties for 80 yds and we had 10 for 100 yds. Were their penalties non-consequential or what? vandy fans must be bitching also
We had a sequence of 3 straight calls in the first half that favored us, and I mentioned to my friend that sequence was a first that I'd ever seen...especially against an SEC opponent.

You mean the penalties that were called when we were down 3 scores inside of 7 minutes left to play? Yeah, they called those. But those hit a little different when you’re up 3 scores with not much time to go versus BS and/or blown calls in a 14-13 game with half a game to go.

Those calls are for the box score. Right out of the old NBA handbook for propping up Boston and LA. The officials would cripple the opponent until the outcome was determined then they would whistle Boston/LA in the waning minutes so the box score would show an even foul count.

Only one organization has the wherewithal to pull something like this off.

And it's not the SEC or ESPN.

Something needs to be done about officiating. I never thought I’d see the two worst officiating games I’ve ever seen

Anybody correctly pointing out that they were Big10 refs is missing the point of the meme. SEC headquarters in B'ham is where the refs went to collect their bribes.
I'm just impressed with these graphics... and yes, Big 10 (18) and SEC are one in the same...

It was at the end of the half. We were in the process of botching the clock management when they gifted us 30 yards.

The calls were awful, but it happens. I’m so sick of us always playing the victim card. We were down 22 until garbage time. The ACC is 0-5. Stop moving the goal posts. We played our hearts out against the Dwags, but we also did enough self-sabotage to keep us from being great in the worst P4 conference. We aren’t a tough team yet, but I love the coaching staff. Just tip your hat to our SEC counterpart and move on. We sound like pussies.
Go gaslight yourself! Set it on fire!

Hell, they seemed to be inviting some of the late penalties, like when Pavia flipped a ball to a fan in the stands after a run where he ended up out of bounds on the Tech sideline.

Apparently the TV showed the ref looking at this board and smirking at it.

He did and shrugged his shoulders.

We admittedly didn’t get to stadium early. Probably arrived on foot at 2p. SW gate had a massive line going to one gate. We decided to go up the hill to take our chances. Saw immediately the Club only entrance and kept going to one of 3(!) lines to the NW gate. 2 we’re massive similar but smaller than the SW entrance. They were merging into what looked like a single entry point (as in a single or maybe double) physical gate. We instead went up the hill a little more to some stairs (3rd line at NW) and it was flowing much faster. Missed the 2 drives.

Don’t be a clown dude. I walked around on either side of the “club” section and it was a nightmare. The walkway at the top of Sections 106 to 101 or so were completely clogged with people trying to order drinks. And the concessions ran out of everything except water in the middle of the 3rd quarter. The lines for the restrooms on the northern end of the stadium was probably 100+ men deep.

That stadium is a joke and you are oblivious if you didn’t happen to notice it.
I guess I’m just lucky - I got my bottled water and took a leak before the game, so none of that affected me. I did mention earlier that the bathroom situation on the club side seemed not great (big bathrooms, but only a couple of them and relatively far away from the seats).

It sucks that the restaurants weren’t staffed up - either the management sucks or the bowl people didn’t tell them what to expect. Doesn’t seem like that should be rocket surgery.

I’m really just trying to provide a counterpoint that not everybody in the stadium had a miserable experience. Maybe I’m just lucky, or maybe I’m smarter and more skilled than everybody else and they should be learning from my example. :-)

I took care of the necessities before the game too, but I definitely saw at halftime what a mess it was .... and again when leaving.

Did it seem kind of pointless that we brought the Wreck to Birmingham and then just drove it like 50 feet out of the tunnel to the sideline when the team took the field? I guess they wouldn’t let us drive it on the field?

I noticed that too, although a friend of mine who arrived on Thursday afternoon, sent me a photo of the Wreck on a street in the city. So I guess it was better used away from the game.

It is really surprising that a stadium as new as Protective Stadium (2021) has so many fundamental design flaws.
- Not enough bathrooms
- Not enough parking
- Parking shuttle drop-off 1/2 mile away on the opposite side of the interstate
- Limited gate access and/or poor people flow

Aren't there just some simple formulas for how many bathrooms you need based on building capacity? Maybe their parking issue is a simple real estate limitation with plans for a future parking deck; but they couldn't figure out how to get the parking deck shuttles near the stadium? Long lines to get concessions and such. Aren't these just basic architecture and ISYE issues that should have been resolved prior to construction?

South Gate, which is where the mass of humanity was jammed, was also the closest gate to my seats and my parking/shuttle drop-off. Pretty poor layout if all of us were supposed to walk to one of the North Gates (heck, have the shuttle bus drop people off north of the stadium instead of south of I-20 if you want to alter the people flow).

If a ref or refs were being bribed, how would they ever be caught. The only risk is someone talking which would be high risk for the talkers. Even then the MSM would refuse to believe it.

In their defense, this is UAB‘s stadium. It was designed for crowds of 5,000 people with tens of thousands of empty seats.

In the 90's, football broadcasts had these educational segments called "College Football Rules of the Game" where a ref would show a clip to viewers and ask them if it is a penalty, then later they would come back and explain whether it was or not. Here's one:

My late-night idea is that we do these videos to educate today's refs about the rules of the game, using clips of blown penalty calls against Tech. Holding, targeting, pass interference, etc.
