I think 6 or 7 wins is possible this season

I’m a skepticist.

But I saw 4 things tonight that tell me this team is improved:

1. Defense. Our defensive players played a hell of a game until they were unnecessarily gassed because of lack of depth, and our offense couldn’t keep them off the field long enough to get their breath. I saw pressure from the front 4. I saw athleticism from the defensive backs. And I saw very good tackling and tenacity and players in position to make plays. D made more athletic plays tonight than I’ve seen in the past 5 years.

2. QB play. Sims has a gun. His passes were extremely accurate. And he stayed I the pocket. And made Clemson pay when he left it.

3. Receivers: They handled 60-70 mph passes from Sims and made catches.

4. Special teams. They made tackles and their coverage was very good.

Take away the easy false starts from the young OL, which should be easy to correct, and we’re a much, much improved team.

I liked it. We played a hell of a game against bigger, stronger athletes with much more depth.

I see 6-7 wins this season, and a bowl game this year.

We are in the game 3/4 of the time. Clemson ran it up at the end of the game just because of their depth.
Can I have some of whatever you are smoking

7 points came on a 5 yard field.
7 points came on a 15 yard field.
3 points came on a 40 yard field.
7 points came late with their backup QB against a lot of our subs too. Thats 24 of the 31 we lost by. It doesn't change anything or make it better but you can't discredit that either.

If our offense isn't playing well, nobody ever credits the defense we are playing.

If our defense plays good, oh it must mean the offense we are playing sucks.
I've read a lot of your posts and one thing is consistent. You're always ginning up justifications and excuses for what at the end of the day is just failure. You're going to defend this öööö to the death, aren't you? There is literally nothing that could ever happen that would ever make you turn against it. Right? In fairness, I will say I admire your consistency and stubborness. But it's hard for me to believe that you actually believe all this öööö.

Tonight's special teams performance tells you that this team is improved. Have I got that right?

We lost by 31 pts. We had 86 penalty yds, they had 10. We had a little over 200 yds of offense, they had almost 400. We were 2/16 on 3d down, they were 7/16. We had two punts blocked. IMHO, we were beat soundly. Fans thinking this game was reason for optimism just shows what an incredibly low state the program has sunk to.

This what happens when you read a box score

Those blocks weren't some weird fluke. They weren't a botched snap or a wet ball or the turf monster – just better players and coaching. I don't see how we can ignore data points like that when evaluating how the team played. Both teams had 14 possessions; we scored on 2; they scored on 7. This was not close.
You serious? You think we'll have 20 blocked punts this year?

Except we've seen ALL of those before. Flashes of competence consistently hampered by the worst coach I've ever seen at the college level. *Points to the spot a player goes out of bounds inexplicably* I see absolutely no reason to think this team will not fold like a lawn chair like last season when the defense faces more dynamic offenses and gets gassed because our offense repeatedly shoots itself in the foot. We sure as hell lost by more points than last year and only won 3 then. I don't see a UNC anomaly happening.

Did you not see that over half those points were scored when the game was completely out of reach and we were completely gassed? It was a pretty tight game for 3/4. Clemson has an operating budget of probably 10x what Georgia Tech does. And and NIL has made that even more significant. Don’t expect a new coach to offset that. Impossible.

I thought the effort was good for three quarters. The play sagged in the fourth as our head coach basically said “no mas” and quit trying. I am not in favor of firing anyone until the season plays out. A four or less win season and the decision to dismiss would be obvious. Five wins would be the “iffy” number for retention.

We could still show improvement. I thought Sims showed more toughness than I have seen previously. The wide receivers played ok. OL was no worse; I recognize blocking the Clemson front will prove tough all year long. The defensive front was better than I thought it would be. Eley started fast, then faded. The DB’s showed effort and made some plays until that last drive. The placekicking was fine. The punter has to get up to game speed.

The key is the next four games. We need to go 3-1 and at 3-2 we would be poised for a shot at a winning season and bowl game. We must go 2-2 in the next 4. That means picking up a win against Ole Miss, UCF or Pitt. At 2-3 we are unlikely to do any better than five wins. At 1-4, it is over. We play out the string and start over next year.

Clemson L
Western Caroline W
Ole Miss L
At UCF L
At Pitt L
Duke W
UVA W
At FSU L
At VT W
UM L
At UNC W both coaches get fired
At UGA L we get butt raped

best case 5-7 and that’s best case
Not. sure we can beat DUKE, Mike Elko seems to be a really good coach, from WEEK 1 observation....

Tell me what is false about my statement. If you read my other post from last night you'll see I called out CGC for the game management issues, the OL blocking, and the special teams (specifically punt team). It's like folks forget it's game 1 of the season and we're playing Clemson. If those issues aren't addressed and fixed, I'll be happy to show them the door.

Good assesment, it could however be 4-8, i cant stand to watch anymore

The make or break for the season will be the Ole Miss, UCF, Pitt stretch. If we lose all 3 and are sitting at 1-4. Duke isn't going to be a cupcake either. While we're sitting here, talking about 6 wins. I just want to beat WC. If we're looking past WC, to Ole Miss, it may end up to be a mistake.

The Ole Miss game imwo, is the key to not only the season, but CGC's future as a HC in P5. They are about the 5th or 6th best team in the sec and should not be confused with their team last year. They wouldn't win the Coastal, much less the Atlantic. Sure, they are a "good" team, but after 2 games against an elite team and a small program, we should show against OM just how much we have improved. OM is an entire level down from uga/Clem, so our being competitive isn't too much to ask well into the 4th year. Lose this one badly and we have a looong season ahead, but win it or look impressive---bring on the floundering Coastal.

I was encouraged by the utilization of screens, and thought the short passing game looked good. Props to Long, Weinke, and Sims there.

Beyond that, Collins hasn't shown he's learned anything about how to manage a football game, and our OL seem to be playing a completely different game, one in which their primary objective is to see who you can accrue the most procedural penalties. After 3+ years of this, I don't see any reason to believe those issues won't significantly limit our win total yet again.

I agree. Need to win outright or at least be competitive late. A much better barometer of off-season improvement than Clemson.
