Is key guaranteed a 2nd year?

The worst part of this whole 5 year period, is to see what Elko has done in less than 2 years at Duke post Cuttcliffe. On paper Duke has less talent on both sides of the ball, and they play hard and disciplined. Elko should be in line for a much bigger job, but reportedly he loves Duke and the school is “all in” on investing in the future of the football program.

There is zero chance we fire Key this year and, barring 2 or less wins, next year. Key will probably have to show substantial improvement to survive year 3. Having said that, I feel like GT is about 7-14 points down before we start a game due to our coaching staff. Key must work to improve himself and his staff.

It's pretty sad when DUKE has surpassed GT in football.

Like my older brother always said; "you better have tough skin, if you're going to pull for the Yellow Jackets!"

I imagine if he was still alive, he would be a nut case by this time of the day!

Key will coach at least through next season, almost assuredly. He will be mediocre at best, in my opinion. Hopefully, we find that special HC that can do more with less.

As a side note , Liberty is undefeated & Tulane about to be 6-1.

Go Jackets!

Tough skin, lobotomy. Same difference

Elko did not inherit a program that was destroyed by a clown, Key did. I am not going to argue that Key is the next Nick Saban; but Key's job right now is to get the program to a point that it can attract a good coaching staff. People were not lining up to take over the mess that the clown left, and thinking that Key or anyone else should have us solidly in bowl contention the first year is silly.

The heck are you talking about? Elko took over a Duke team coming off a 3-9, 0-8 ACC team.

People weren’t lining up to take the GT job, because GT wasn’t willing to pay the going rate for a proven coach after having to pay the buyout. The finalists for the job, and the 2 who turned GT down prove that.

GT still had more talent vs what Elko took over with.

To think GT could win 6 games with the schedule this year was not overblown expectations. I thought this was a 5-7 team, which looks more like 4-8. Schedule in 2024 as noted right now with FSU, ND, Clemson, UGA isn’t going to be easy if UNC, Miami are also on it.

Duke is better that a lot of teams in football right now. I can think of 8 SEC teams, most of the ACC and Big Ten. They are legit

I really don't feel like expecting to win six games is silly If winning the two (should be freebies) and four more is too much to ask then I guess I'm just silly.

I like key and I'm pulling for him but not just losing but getting our asses kicked by bowling Green and the way we look for large chunks of the other games makes me think the staff is in over their head.
I could drive 30 minutes and find 4 or 5 high school coaches that would beat BG and put a well coached team on the field.

I've said it before but I am tired of excuses. Either show improvement or pack your öööö. I want a six win season to piss us off, not be celebrated

Duke was better than GT at the end of Paul Johnson’s tenure as well. I believe we had lost 3 of 4 before Collins got here.

What I'm talking about is a 3-9 Cutcliffe team isn't as big a mess as the clown left. You really want to compare Cutcliffe to the clown?

GT has some talent issues; but the problems go deeper than that.

Sorry man, but “8 SEC teams, most of the ACC and B1G” is a stretch. Duke is a very good team, but they are living off Clemson having a lot of self inflicted wounds. Look at the other wins to date.

FCS Lafayette
Northwestern - 3-4
UCONN - 1-6
NCSU - 4-3

Yes. They played ND to the wire, so we’ll see what they do against FSU tonight.

You can’t blame the current situation over a year later on the current state of the 2023 3-4 team. This caught my eye before the season started, and it’s starting to look accurate. From Athlons:

"The positives there are that they played their asses off and won a few games because teams assumed the worst. That’s a backhanded compliment, but it’s the truth."

"This is still the same program with the same problems."

"It’s likely they hang on to Brent while the new AD figures out their long-term plans.”

I don't disagree with Athlon. I doubt Key is the long term solution; but he can prove me wrong. Like I said before, I think Key's job is to build us into a team that another coach is willing to takeover. I don't foresee Key making/leaving as big a mess as the clown did; whether that translates into bowl eligibility we'll see.

I was excited when Key was hired. He did well in the second half of last season, seemed to be no nonsense and seemed to make good hires etc. But today when I saw him taking timeout after timeout at questionable times, I became disillusioned and was reminded of gef.

Going back to two weeks ago, while it was a great win, it was gifted to us by Miami and we should be 2-5 at this point. Obviously I’m glad we won two weeks ago but most coaches arentgoing to make moronic decisions like that and we can’t rely on miracle plays every week.

BC came in and hung with us and then pulled away stepping on our throats while we just seemed to submit. “Oh well it’s happening again *shrug*.”

I’ve gone from liking Key to wondering very much if he was the right hire. Worse, I’m starting to wonder if we have the interest/funding to make a decent hire if Key doesn’t work out. With the constant conference shifts, and the state of GT football over the past 5 or so years, I’m concerned we may be at the end, if we aren’t there already.

Having said that, I keep thinking about the Kansas game in 2010. Everyone was horrified when we lost. Now the result of that game would be par for the course.

The worst part of the whole “anonymous” coaches comments is:

“This is the same program with the same problems” which was the same comments by other ACC coaches when CPJ was at GT. ALL coaches around the conference know the lack of support from the top (school) down, which is cemented by Football Scoop when the job has opened both times recently. Most coaches think “GT is in downtown Atlanta” in a hotbed of recruiting (state of Georgia) and then quickly the list of candidates dwindles due to the fact reality hits after they do their research as it relates to the school itself being the biggest hurdle to GT ever being an upper level ACC program. Rick Neuheisel has said time and time again D-Rad warned him of the barriers the school has in place as it relates to the football program (lack of $$$, support internally from the profs, etc) despite the perceived advantages ala state of Georgia. This was even after they figured out a way to get around the Calc requirement going to GPC.

We don’t have the talent to fire CBK right now. It’d take a miracle to go bowling with the talent we have right now. Need to hang onto this recruiting class.

At least this year’s squad has showed POTENTIAL. That was never the case under Joffrey.

Bowling Green was never supposed to be one of the losses.
True. And Miami was not supposed to be one of the wins. You lose some you shouldn't and you win some you shouldn't, and that's how you get to 4 to 6 wins.
