Is key guaranteed a 2nd year?

To answer your question, it depends on what you consider a good team at this point? Are GT standards now 6-6 = good? How about 7-5? If so, maybe 2025 GT has a chance to get to 6-6. OOC schedule:

@ Colorado
Gardner-Webb
Temple
UGA

Add in auto ACC games with UofL, Clemson means GT needs to beat Colorado to go 3-1 OOC.

Overall problem is this. The GT alumni base & SW fans need to come together and work on the following:

1. Really put the schools feet to the fire to make changes showing a true buy in to football. Actions instead of words. People will come to the games if the product is worth seeing in person. For the better part of almost 7 years that hasn’t been the case. Before you or anyone else says it, yeah 7-6 in 2019. GT was blown out by every good team. Hell, Minnesota in the bowl game dominated GT on both sides of the ball in CPJ’s last game. The last good team GT fielded was 2016.
2. As a fanbase STOP with the annual excuses:

A. Quit blaming the GA BOR who have more GT alums than UGA.
B. Quit blaming the ACC for some mythical schedule bias against GT.
C. Stop blaming the team to the east, Clemson, Alabama, <fill in the blank> for the current state of the CFB arms race divide.
D. Stop comparing everything to the team to the east. They are an ocean sized gap ahead of GT. That would be the case regardless of if CPJ was still the HC. GT is closer to Vandy than they are to most ACC / SEC programs at the moment.

GT can and has proven they can compete at a very high level. As a SW fan I’m more than happy to contribute financially the day I see a change by the school showing they CARE one bit. Football can bring in a TON of $$$ to the school. Hiring coaches on the cheap continually going to aging alums while proclaiming how many “1 of X” GT alums are millionaires to bail out the GTAA’s failures has led to the position GT is in. There is absolutely no reason GT should have been turned down by the former Coastal Carolina now Liberty HC and the current coach of Tulane.

Fact is, GT has the 3rd best HC in the state of Georgia. Never thought I would see Georgia Southern have a more proven coach (Helton).

The 2023 season looks like a 4, maybe 5 win season. Despite the rough 2024 schedule GT has to go 6-6 and show a jump in the overall play on both sides of the ball and most of all eliminate the embarrassing coaching blunders like 10 men in the field, etc. 2025 needs to be another jump to 7-5, 8-4 or GT will be hiring a new staff again.

I’ll end this with one last thought…..If GT doesn’t fix the mess they are in, there is no way in hell the B1G provides GT with an offer when the ACC folds in the next few years. The GOR will be broken before 2036, I’d say Clemson or FSU breaks it before the end of 2028. That means GT has time to rebuild themselves into a product worthy of being a part of conference expansion. Otherwise, GT will be begging for an invite to the B12 or worse……
Fact: Willie Fritz & Jamey Chadwell didn't turn down Georgia Tech. Jamey Chadwell and GT couldn't come to an agreement on Salary & Asst Coaches Salary and recruitment budget. Yes that is right Jamey Chadwell could have came to the Flats had Georgia Tech had the money.

Willie Fritz would have came to Georgia Tech, however the boosters who thought Brent Key was the second coming of George O'Leary made some sort of midnight mandate for Willie Fritz to announce he was coming to GT, knowing his desire to coach in the Cotton Bowl completely undermining the AD and President. This is the reason why the AD is going all in on corporate dollars. The Boosters have been a problem at Tech for a long time as people will remember how underfundied Paul Johnson era was, which make his success so much more amazing when you consider he was supported like a FCS program from the booster level. Give the new AD J. Batt some time.

5 years, $15 million - Buyout: Key receives all of the remaining money on the contract only if he is dismissed by Dec. 31, 2023. The percentage drops to 70% in the second year, 60% in the third year and 50% for the remainder.

That’s how I got to the numbers. I rounded because the base varies by year.

Yes, this was a very Tech friendly deal. Basically a two year tryout contract. Right now, Key has done some good things, but he has to learn how to beat bad teams. Uva 22, BG 23, and BC 23 are all bad looks.

I'm curious from what you had heard if it synchs with what I had heard on the money part. Was it that we didn't have the money for Chadwell at all, or that we didn't want to offer that kind of money at the time? I had heard we were really trying to limit guaranteed money on the next contract (reflected in how Key's buyout drops so much over time).

I really thought a bowl game was something we could achieve this season but I'm seriously having my doubts. Where do y'all see three more wins? There is zero guarantee wins on our schedule. I just don't know if our coaches can turn this around. We got some players but the coaching has been a big disappointment.

There are 0 guaranteed losses too... the games have to be played before they're recorded

You see through different lens than me.
I guess we didn't beat Miami since we had a 10% chance to win then? We didn't beat F$U in 2015 because the number said we would lose, right? Why even watch/play the games if they're already predetermined outcomes.

The way we won against Miami is not the blueprint for success. We're too inconsistent to try and win a game like that. It's a coaching issue.

I sure hope not, but he probably gets a second year as the AD moves away from boosters to corporate dollars. I mean we passed on Willie Fritz and Jamey Chadwell for this????
We don't know what this is yet, plus it's very probable Fritz and/or Chadwell would be going through the same lack of buy in.

Responsible booster/boosters, need to be publicly humiliated.

We need to be a little pragmatic and understand Key is guaranteed a second and most likely a third year. Everyone loves a "Bad News Bears" story, but Geoff but the program in a total $hithouse. We have a team right now where true freshman have had to step up on the O-line and receiving corps. The fact that kids one year removed from high school are carrying the team should highlight the depth issues we have. And I think this shows in our inability to play a full 60 minutes. We aren't going to be able to win on talent and will have to make up with great execution. The wins we see the rest of the season will be because players willed themselves to play good assignment football.

And moves on to a better job.
As opposed to having a coach that does poorly and then we have to pay them not to coach? At least if the coach leaves on their own we can freely hire the next guy instead of bargain binning.

The $10.3MM combined number (Key 2.8M + staff 7.5M) this year is the highest GT has ever paid out! We are also paying off the Clown.

Chadwell wanted 14M (4M + staff 10M) and I have also heard he wanted a bump to the recruiting budget (couldn't verify)
