Is key guaranteed a 2nd year?

From what I understand of the situation, either Cabrera alone or him and Batt combined decided to severely restrict what sort of guaranteed money would be in any new coaches contract and that was what turned off Fritz in particular. So either that is going to be our policy from here-on, in which case you are right, or we will be willing to offer sweeter terms for them next time. I would agree with you that money would be the #1 reason we don't fire Key after 2 years. Key is probably going to get 3 years and the word "deserve" isn't going to factor in.
You are probably right. But additionally, the bad look of giving one of your own only two years to fix a dumpster fire is NOT going to make any good coach look at that and want to come here and try to fix the dumpster fire himself.. He's going to be thinking that if things don't immedaietly get better, it could be one and done. Who wants to pick up his family and relocate them for that possibility???

Sorry man, but “8 SEC teams, most of the ACC and B1G” is a stretch. Duke is a very good team, but they are living off Clemson having a lot of self inflicted wounds. Look at the other wins to date.

FCS Lafayette
Northwestern - 3-4
UCONN - 1-6
NCSU - 4-3

Yes. They played ND to the wire, so we’ll see what they do against FSU tonight.
Duke is 5-1 AND currently beating the undefeated number 4 team in the country in its own stadium in the 4th quarter.

I'd give my left nut for Tech to do that.

I watched the NC State and Clemson games. They are disciplined and play hard.

Duke might very well wind up losing tonight, but - as you said - they have proven that they are a very good team. When will I be able to say that again about the Jackets?

What? So you are saying a coach wouldn’t want to make millions for a few years then move? They do it all the time. Elko did it so did Freeze and Colorado’s new coach. Coaches leave jobs all the freaking time - whether being fired or on their own. To act like we are somehow mandated to keep any coach because we couldn’t find a replacement is just laughable.

I basically agree that he won't be fired after year 2, both for money reasons as well as practical ones as you have said. Maybe what I'm thinking is he could get to that year 3 whether he has earned it or not and could be almost a lame duck at that point unless he pulls something really good together.

I'm sure he is and he could lose out and not get canned but I'm done. I really wanted him to succeed and with what he did after taking over last year I was ok with the hire.
I'm tired of excuses and saying it takes time. Sure maybe it takes time to win the conference but most of us would have been happy winning 6 ööööing games and making a ööööty bowl this year. It doesn't look like we'll even do that.

I know they won't fire him after one year but I would be watching the market and keeping the option open if we could find a good candidate. GT football is still an embarrassment and not getting much better under key.
Whether Key works out or not, at what point did you think this was going to be a quick fix? That was the point when you needed help.

I guess I'm crazy for expecting to beat BG. You can say it's talent if you want but I think we showed we had the talent to beat Louisville. I guess BG is just to talented for us to compete with even after they spotted us 14. And to think we had a chance against the powerhouse of bc was completely insane.

Maybe in three years we will have the talent to compete with BG?

I didn't expect much but winning six games, looking like an actual college football team and beating BG shouldn't be to much to ask for from a guy making millions.

Just estimating the annual salary, if we fire Key we owe him:

After 2023: $8m
After 2024: $6m
After 2025: $3.5m
After 2026: $1.5m

He definitely gets another season and probably gets a third season.

He’d get a lot more grace from me if he came out and said “we have some players who are holdovers from the prior staff who refuse to buy in to what we are trying to do and are dragging team morale down. They have been dismissed. This is our new depth chart.”

To answer your question, it depends on what you consider a good team at this point? Are GT standards now 6-6 = good? How about 7-5? If so, maybe 2025 GT has a chance to get to 6-6. OOC schedule:

@ Colorado
Gardner-Webb
Temple
UGA

Add in auto ACC games with UofL, Clemson means GT needs to beat Colorado to go 3-1 OOC.

Overall problem is this. The GT alumni base & SW fans need to come together and work on the following:

1. Really put the schools feet to the fire to make changes showing a true buy in to football. Actions instead of words. People will come to the games if the product is worth seeing in person. For the better part of almost 7 years that hasn’t been the case. Before you or anyone else says it, yeah 7-6 in 2019. GT was blown out by every good team. Hell, Minnesota in the bowl game dominated GT on both sides of the ball in CPJ’s last game. The last good team GT fielded was 2016.
2. As a fanbase STOP with the annual excuses:

A. Quit blaming the GA BOR who have more GT alums than UGA.
B. Quit blaming the ACC for some mythical schedule bias against GT.
C. Stop blaming the team to the east, Clemson, Alabama, <fill in the blank> for the current state of the CFB arms race divide.
D. Stop comparing everything to the team to the east. They are an ocean sized gap ahead of GT. That would be the case regardless of if CPJ was still the HC. GT is closer to Vandy than they are to most ACC / SEC programs at the moment.

GT can and has proven they can compete at a very high level. As a SW fan I’m more than happy to contribute financially the day I see a change by the school showing they CARE one bit. Football can bring in a TON of $$$ to the school. Hiring coaches on the cheap continually going to aging alums while proclaiming how many “1 of X” GT alums are millionaires to bail out the GTAA’s failures has led to the position GT is in. There is absolutely no reason GT should have been turned down by the former Coastal Carolina now Liberty HC and the current coach of Tulane.

Fact is, GT has the 3rd best HC in the state of Georgia. Never thought I would see Georgia Southern have a more proven coach (Helton).

The 2023 season looks like a 4, maybe 5 win season. Despite the rough 2024 schedule GT has to go 6-6 and show a jump in the overall play on both sides of the ball and most of all eliminate the embarrassing coaching blunders like 10 men in the field, etc. 2025 needs to be another jump to 7-5, 8-4 or GT will be hiring a new staff again.

I’ll end this with one last thought…..If GT doesn’t fix the mess they are in, there is no way in hell the B1G provides GT with an offer when the ACC folds in the next few years. The GOR will be broken before 2036, I’d say Clemson or FSU breaks it before the end of 2028. That means GT has time to rebuild themselves into a product worthy of being a part of conference expansion. Otherwise, GT will be begging for an invite to the B12 or worse……

I think he pretty much did that on radio segment on game recap.

I have no faith that we can best Temple. I’m also iffy on Gardner-Webb.

The biggest concern I have is that Key gives me no reason to believe it’s going to get better. At least the Clown did that, even if it was bullshit.

I guess money talks, but you’ll spook potential replacement coaches if you’re serious about firing this guy after only one season. I’d put the probability of that happening near zero.

He did actually say this yesterday! See the other thread about divided locker room. Now, what he actually does to rectify the situation…

I sure hope not, but he probably gets a second year as the AD moves away from boosters to corporate dollars. I mean we passed on Willie Fritz and Jamey Chadwell for this????

5 years, $15 million - Buyout: Key receives all of the remaining money on the contract only if he is dismissed by Dec. 31, 2023. The percentage drops to 70% in the second year, 60% in the third year and 50% for the remainder.
