Is Sims gone?

I'm not sure why it was left up to him in that way. Like he or the trainers should know if he could play or not before the middle of a game.
The trainers have cleared him to play all season; he was cleared to go back in the UVA game but Geoff chose not to. He then chose to practice every week that followed and Geoff chose not to play on Saturdays.

what if he was "willing" to play but then changed his mind in the middle of the game? what else can the coach do if he was lied to? only thing i can think of is kick him off the team sooner

If he changed his mind in the middle of the game, medically clear to play, and refused to go in, you simply don’t answer questions. You talk with the young to hear his reasoning and most likely end his playing on the team this year.

We need to get our act together on these situations. None of us want to jeopardize the health of our players. Clearance to play should mean the health of the player should not be compromised by playing. And, if the player or his family does not agree with the medical opinion the player should not dress.

So Sims is not Bob Baun (look him up - and yes it is a far different circumstance - a chance to win Lord Stanley's Cup versus a chance to beat Miami and get closer to bowl eligibility). Or Ronnie Lott.
Ok.
Anybody else remember Marshall's offensive line picking up and carrying Byron Leftwich between plays after he got hurt but he wouldn't come out on a game-winning drive?
Good luck to Sims on wherever he goes next. I think he's done here no matter who the coach next coach is.

Why would Key take all that experience from a starting QB and banish him from team/position meetings? Even with a bum foot and while in rehab, he's still a service to all the other QBs in the room or O players in general.

It's not just smoke we're discussing here.

I do'nt know. Why would Jeff Sims lie about being willing to play all the way up until he was asked to do it and betray his coach, teammates, and fans? Why wouldn't he just say he's not feeling healthy enough to play earlier, especially given that everyone knows he has suffered multiple legitimate injuries this season?

This is kind of my point. We're all just speculating here. And depending on which way you speculate, you're taking that "rather large rock" and either placing it squarely on Key's forehead or squarely on Sims's forehead. Doing that without all the information doesn't feel great to me when it's two of our own in question.

Ok well let's try it like this.... say you are the one hurt and don't feel comfortable starting, or playing a huge role but you are medically cleared, so you take it day to day (Key said for both of the last 2 weeks that Jeff was practicing and was day to day) and you dress because if the game is out of hand in either direction and the coach just needs you to take snaps late in the game and hand the ball off, you can do that... as an "emergency situation." Then when starter goes down and coach immediately comes straight to you and asks, "Can you go in?" wanting you to finish half of a game that you will need to rely on your foot to keep us in or win. That wouldn't seem odd to you?

Odd or not, you’re on scholarship to play football and medically cleared to play. If you’re making a decision not to play (for literally any reason) then more power to you. But that decision should come with the consequence of losing your scholarship. On the spot.

I will say this though, Batt should be doing a postmortem of the situation if he hasn't already. No matter who was at fault, there is no debate that this has been a bad look for GT and we need to see if it was preventable to minimize the chances of it occurring in the future.

lol

"Coach my dad died this morning, I really can't play today."

"I understand, son. There are some things more important than football and my prayers are with you. I'm going to have to revoke your scholarship now, because you're medically cleared and if you decide not to play for literally any reason, you face the consequences."

Obviously that's an extreme situation, but it's just to demonstrate that real life has a lot of nuance and saying that if you decide not to play for literally any reason you lose your scholarship is a really bad idea.

Was thinking along these lines before coming across your post. I was also thinking, right or wrong, or somewhere in the middle, this doesn’t help Key moving forward either in terms of becoming HC.

Glad we finally got this figured out. I wish him well with healing and moving on with his football career and education, I seriously doubt his future is at Tech.

Can we please improve our sports information and public relations in the AA? This was handled pitifully. Do not announce an athlete is cleared to play if he is not ready, fit and willing to play. If he can play and is choosing to opt out, do not let him dress. Keep the matter internally. We made ourselves look bad, Jeff Sims look bad, and have angered his family. That is a big fat F in public relations.
Does each Athletic Director have his own sports information and public relations people? If so these people may also be on the way out and not that interested in getting it right.

Good grief. Some of you have never put on the pads and jockstrap, and it shows.

Well you’ve missed the point here. The coach isn’t asking you to play in this scenario. That’s kind of the whole point.

These kids get bombarded with advice from all their friends and family, and most of it is bad. Usually, the problem is that the athlete and their circle of advisors all think that the NFL is their ultimate destiny, and the portal or the draft is the way to move on from their current struggles. They don't have a clue that the player's magical future as the celebrity athlete they expected coming out of HS has faded, along with any prospects of changing fate by moving on. Unfortunately, kids at their age are still more likely to listen to the voices that tell them what they want to hear.

We all do that both young and old.
