Is Sims gone?

From the Athletic:

Key said Tuesday that Sims will “not be with the football team” for the rest of the season and will spend time with the training staff.
All appearances were that Sims was medically cleared to play for Saturday’s game against Miami, and the team announced before kickoff that he was “available” in an “emergency situation.” But Key started Pyron, and when the quarterback left the game with an injury Sims was not brought in.
It remains a possibility Sims will transfer, which he chose not to do after the 2021 season. – Schultz

From AJC:

After not being able to play in the past three games because of a sprained foot, Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims will be away from the team indefinitely, interim coach Brent Key announced Tuesday at his weekly news conference.

Key said the decision was made with Sims and the team medical staff “that it would be best for Jeff to not be in meetings or not be in practice but be in treatment and rehab now moving forward.”

If he is not playing do to a sprain foot... I believe that this young man (Jeff Simms) is transferring....

So basically Sims won’t be around the team.

He said “With all the NIL stuff going on, there needs to be contracts set in place, just like in the pros, so schools can be protected from players leaving on a whim after getting paid or another team paying them to leave. I’m ok with it if they want to be pros and get paid, but they have to be treated like pros and their decisions should have consequences just like they do with the pros.” I think he’s right.

I agree this is where we are heading, but that also means allowing schools to directly pay players.

Right now the NCAA argues schools aren't violating antitrust laws by capping compensation at the cost of attendance because players are students rather than employees. They can't credibly argue that while also saying that players need to sign employment contracts with the schools like professionals do.

The Supreme Court has argued that cap already violates antitrust law and will be struck down if and when it is challenged -- requiring employment contracts will surely speed that process up, so they won't do it until they have to. The NCAA is desperately trying to hold onto any semblance of the current model as long as they can for a bunch of reasons.

I think what's interesting about this situation is that I can't recall anything similar happening in the past, i.e. - A player being medically cleared and then not WANTING to go in. The closest equivalent I can think of is Gibbs' situation against uga last year, but it takes a few assumptions just to get there mentally as well.

Yeah. It is very odd. I'm not really familiar with the process but I would think in most cases one of the questions the medical staff asks to determine if a player is cleared to play is, "Do you feel confident on it?"

Lots of speculation for sure. I for one wish him the best. He is a young man trying navigate a new world of football that has changed for all of us. Some are better than others dealing with it. Some get better advice. And I am
sure it will not be long before the lawyers already salivating feast on liability claims and lost NIL wages because a trainer or team doctor gave a clearance that player questioned. I love the game but that seems to be decreasing with every game and season. The unintended consequences of these changes will likely accelerate and us old timers will be long gone by then.

Good grief. Some of you have never put on the pads and jockstrap, and it shows.

Oh they’ve worn the jockstrap all right.

And there needs to be a draft, and a salary cap.

... and in other news, Mr. Sims picked up a new NIL sponsor, Philly, PA government. He'll be the new face of their awareness campaign.

Is this something you guys know or speculation? I'm really surprised (in a good way) that a GT player was able to pull that.
I've been told by three separate people who are pretty well connected that his NIL deal was a "six figure deal". I had always assumed that meant in the $100K range but it could have been more.

A kid? A kid that signed an NIL that took me years of hard work to get to. He can grow up and learn to take some heat and be a team player in the ultimate team sport.
The other thing to consider is that he

Agreed. As many have stated…NIL has changed the playing field when it comes to college sports. No talent Joe Scrub ain’t making decent change via NIL. Criticism comes with the territory now, whether the players and/or fans like it or not.
