James johnson quits

Some of you spoke a little too soon saying negative things about James. He is a great kid who has been trying to decide what is best for him for a while now. He will do well in life, he decided to share with everyone his thoughts on leaving a classy thing he definitely did not owe to anyone.

"I didn't think it was fair for me to continue to go out and play when I didn't have the passion my friends and teammates had," Johnson said. "It would be almost like stealing Georgia Tech's money."

Johnson, who is on scholarship this semester but won't be after that, plans to stay at Tech and earn a degree in management after the fall semester. He also plans to spend his Saturdays at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
"I'm for what the coaches are doing. I'm for what Georgia Tech is doing. I'll be there cheering them on," he said. "I wouldn't want to cheer for anyone else."

James is a class act and someone I will miss seeing on the field. He is a Tech man and deserves everyones respect for the hard work he put in the last few years.

"Leaving the Georgia Tech football team was a decision I have considered for some time. I did not think it was fair to the coaches and my teammates for me to be out there, taking up a scholarship, when my heart really wasn't in to playing football.
"I am all for what Coach Johnson is doing. My decision had nothing to do with the coaching change or the change in the offense. I am all for what Coach Johnson and his staff are doing and the direction that Georgia Tech is taking. The future of the program is very bright. I will always be a Yellow Jacket."

Good kid. Best of luck. WAY too much examination.

He just needed to leave. What's wrong with that?

If you want to boo a ref, go ahead. If you want to boo the other team, go ahead. But booing your home team is just plain stupid. If you're upset with the lack of results on the field, stop showing up to the games.

Think about it this way. When you boo the team, these could be your classmates. These could be the kids of the alumni sitting two rows over. Yes, some of these kids are here as nothing more then a stop over to the pros. But most of these kids will never play a snap in the NFL. They play because they love a sport and they want to represent our school.

Yes, they get a free ride. If you could call it that. At this point, however, football season is closer to having a student job to pay for school. If these kids don't produce both on the field and in the classrooms, they could have their free ride gone.

I look at the team as my team, my personal team. I have learned, the hard way, not take the losses as personally as I did when in school. I would assume that I am nowhere near alone in this feeling. So booing the team, essentially, is booing myself. You can be cool with getting down on yourself. I would rather be supportive of the kids who play a game for our amusement and their education.
Man, I can't argue with what you say because those are your feelings and they're respectable.

But I know there are hypocrites in this very thread. Where was all of this talk when Reggie was our QB?

Just wanted to add that I don't personally boo players, but I don't think it's a big deal if others do it.

That right there shows character. That's effing cool. That's like the Anti-Donley.

James' comments via demjackets post show he is a VERY classy character guy. I'm glad he was part of GT and glad he will continue to be as a fan, supporter, and alumni.

If I had criticized him, I'd be feeling pretty (explicative) low right now.

I never had any trouble with James Johnson's efforts representing us on the field. He had some crucial drops, but also some big catches. I would have liked to see him play his final year. But, if his heart was not in it, I only wish him the best as he moves past football.

The fan base seems to be trying to adopt PJ's get tough attitude with some pretty harsh "good riddance" comments. It will be interesting to see how tough love with plenty of healthy booing for lack of performance will affect the team in the future. It sounds like we are getting ourselves in shape to be a pretty demanding, critical fan base. Maybe that will get us over the hump?

Well I did criticize him, but unlike many on here, I don't feel bad about it. I wasn't saying JJ is a bad person or a thug, I was simply stating my perceptions on his football skills. It may be that I'm only a few years older than these guys, but I don't feel bad about being critical of a 22-23 year old man's football skills.I appreciate everything JJ has done for GT, but I'm not going to cry myself to sleep tonight.

Exactly how do you let other knows know who you are booing? Yea. Stupid discussion.
Is it that hard? Coach X calls for a punt on 4th and inches (hypothetically), and the crowd boos. Who in their right mind would actually think the crowd is booing the players right there?

I saw Reggie sitting at the Stinger stop every day on my way to class. I never booed him, nor would I boo any of Tech's athletes, but there was more then a few occasions were I'd throw my hands up in disbelief and curse "a bit". Personally, I think seeing the guys going through the same classes you are makes you realize that they're just like everyone else. Except Luke Schenscher, who was a monster.

As for James, while it sucks that someone could lose their passion to play sports, I applaud the kid for sticking to his education, which will mean much more in life then football ever will.

My boo's, like my farts, can be delivered with sniper like accuracy.

-> taking the discussion down a notch <-

As if it could be done.

Then why do the players feel upset for CHAN ****ING GAILEY (can I say that here?) being booed after being on the video board.

Because he was....their...coach? Maybe? That doesn't make it wrong to boo the guy.

I'm with you. I came to the realization long ago that players play...all they do is play when they're told to. Reggie didn't make the depth chart. He didn't start himself over other quarterbacks, and he didn't leave himself in when he struggled. The head coach did that. That's why I try not to boo the players...I don't think it's evil and vile like others do, but I just choose not to. The coach? yeah.

not to re-open wounds, but after last year can you really still think that anyone else on the team could have played QB for us? it wasnt really the coach's "choice" either, it was a reality of life

Absolutely. Give us Calvin last year and we would have been in contention for the ACC title without a doubt, and Taylor would have made third or second team all acc, if not first team. That was why Taylor looked just as bad, if not worse, than Reggie...he didn't have the advantage of the best receiver in the country.
