Jeff Monken and USCe

The TO can and will work for any team/program.I always insisted CPJ would beat any team with good players.
The problem as it was here is recruiting.
Even if it’s run at an sec school kids don’t want to play in the system anymore. We can all rant about why and how they are wrong but it’s not gonna change.

Played 21 P-5 schools in his 6 years at Navy, with a record of 9-12, including wins over Stanford, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh.

In the previous 6 years before Paul Johnson, Navy played 18 P-5 schools, with a record of 4-14.
Most were scheduled before he got there, and the rating of his opponents softened over time, as he gained more control of the schedule. And of the P-5 teams he played, they tended to be the softer ones, like Duke and Wake and Vandy.

Yeah, he beat some good names, but we know he had great records against head coaches that had not seen the 3o before, and could only beat 30% of the teams whose head coach had seen the option for three years, which explains his losing record in conference the last chunk of his journey at Georgia Tech. After that fluke year of 2014 he was well below his predecessors in performance.

Face it: the program is damaged beyond repair and we should close this farce of an "athletic" program rather than continue this abortion of a rebuild. It's only right.

We had a reason to give up and go that route versus UGAg. Does South Carolina really think their situation is that hopeless versus Clemson?

One man can only speak so much truth. Repent now, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

The problem is everywhere, not just here. Your recruiting will tank and your OL and DL will shrink into stubby, short-armed bulldozers. Before you know it, you're stuck in a marriage where divorce will be extremely painful to the point of rebooting a program after the death penalty. GT is a cautionary tale for all others in FBS.

Beat Stanford, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh in his last two seasons at Navy. Navy.

"...that fluke year of 2014..."

Yeah, beating #9 Ugag, coming within a field goal of beating #4 FSU, going to the Orange Bowl, and stomping the #7 team in the country, a team that had held the #1 spot for six weeks, means nothing, nothing at all. Just a "fluke". Or, I guess a series of "flukes".

Look, I do think Paul's time had passed here at Tech and it was time for him to go (which he did gracefully, and saved us six figures in compensation). He did have a problem recruiting at the P-5 level, partly owing to the quirky scheme, but in no way will I disparage his career as a coach, or our 2014 season in which we finished #6 in the nation.

2014's team used illegal blocking and the NCAA adjusted in 2015, neutering your beloved paul's offense. Just stop, 'athensJacket'

If it was a valid offense, it would be prominently featured in the SEC and Kirby would adapt it. There is no hope for GTAA and recruits would be wise to attend a rising athletic powerhouse like Kennesaw State or Georgia State.

Monken's cousin Todd is the OC at Georgia.
USCe's No. 1 recruit is Gunner Stockton, the QB from Rabun County. His coach is Jaybo Shaw and Shaw is still a huge Monken fan. Stockton's dad is the DC at Rabun and also a big Monken fan.
I wouldn't necessarily automatically assume Jeff will bring the triple to Columbia. In fact, I would be surprised if he did.

Shaw's name rings a bell. Did he have a GT connection back when?

Geoff Collins’ job in recruiting is made easier thanks to Paul Johnson.

I agree with you, but the frustration many have, including me, is that he could have done more if he simply ate some of his pride. I just think we hired him at the point in his life where the fire was dying down so instead of attacking his job he went with what he knew. And like you pointed out, his system worked on occasion, but the more we played the same teams it didn’t.

I’m a huge fan of his, but if I could ask him one question it would be “Why didn’t you fight harder in public against the media portrayal of your system?”. Not one time do I remember him taking the microphone and looking at the camera and talk to the high school players in this state about what GT could do for them and how his system works. Instead, he acted as if the questions from the press were a waste of his time and everyone saw it. My own kids who were born Jackets would ask me when they were little why our coach is so mean. There is a video somewhere of Johnson at a white board explaining his system. It was awesome and drew me in. But he never did that in public. Say what you want about Dabo when he was hired (like Collins now) but you couldn’t shut that guy or keep him away from the camera. People are attracted to positive, enthusiastic people not geniuses who hide in a basement.

I agree with all of this. I never said he was perfect - he did have his flaws and blindspots, IMO. As I said, his recruiting woes were "partly" due to the quirky scheme. There was more to it than that, which you pointed out.

He had his flaws, but when someone just wholesale bashes a coach with his record, it rings a sour bell. He had his shortcomings, and he had his upside. On the whole he was stellar at the lower levels, and he did pretty well here - but it was time for him to move on. And he did, gracefully.

Take away 2014, and the athletes Geoff Collins provided him, and Johnson's tenure at GT was a joke, and the joke was getting worse by the year.

You mean to tell me CGC doesn't use recent history to tell his story of what this program can be? Of course, he does. It's such an easier sell to do so than if he had to go the route of - I'm building on a dream that you can't actually touch, feel, or see for yourself. But, trust me anyway.

For example, which is more powerful to kids as to what Collins envisions for this program - the Orange Bowl trophy from 2014 or the Sugar Bowl trophy from 1956? Because, as far as big name bowl wins, that's the gap in our trophy case. Speaking about the '09 ACC title or the '90 or '98 ("shared") one? Competing for 4 ACC titles in the past 10 years or competing for 2 ('06/'90) in the past 20 years before that? How about clips of BDS at night with it rocking and thumping Top 5 teams? CGC likes telling those stories, right? Well, since we beat 2 Top5 teams at home in the last 10 years and it was something like 40 years since that happened, there's another chapter to our recent past.

The story of our program has been made stronger over the past 10+ years.

You sound like a complete dipshit right now.

Johnson gave us cupcake wins and a losing ACC record since 2014. That is your idea of what recruits want? You think 2014 is recent? What are you? 50?

Collins talks about the continuum of GT football. To a recruit, 2014 and 1956 are about the same. We can say, from Heisman onward, we have been there, done that, have the t-shirt, but GT was a DEAD recruiting destination because of Paul Johnson. We are trying to recapture our glory and say it is who and what we are, but we are recruiting AGAINST what Johnson did, not for it, and the spectre of Johnson's miasma with the kids haunts us today, as we are a team of freshmen combined with hangers-on. Yeah, we are using the Orange Bowls, because we use everything we can.

Next why don't you tell me what a tough break it was losing a 4-star player like Dingle?

It was really tough. His team had to play with a ghost runner in the kick ball tourney. Lots of arguments about how and when the ghost runner was called out. It was a mess.
