Johnson/Option Haters - You are forgiven

Started off with Flunkgate right out of the gate

Recruited NFL caliber players, especially defensive, who came into their own around 2008

Recruited Calvin Johnson.

Recruited Demaryus Thomas.

Recruited Jon Dwyer

Finally had a pro style QB headed our way in Sean Renfree, if Josh Nesbitt didn't take the position in camp - we will never know.
Never beat Georgia.

Forgiven for what? Nobody "hated" the option, it was just time to move along. Clemson has it figured out. UGAg had it figured out. Duke had it figured out. We were going to be playing for scraps.
Clemson and Georgia had it figured out by getting four five-star defensive linemen. Even with Dwyer and Nesbitt in 09 they were still monstrously tough - Clemson especially with Bowers, Goodman, Jenkins and Thompson. Hell, Georgia had Justin Houston, Abry Jones (who both played in the NFL for several years), Geno Atkins .... I don't think we ever quite replaced Mills in later years at B back, as good as Mason was, nor did we get back to the kind of OL we had with Burden and Shaq in 14.
Duke, I think, probably did the best job with equal or lesser talent. They spent more time on it and I think they guessed (correctly) what adjustments PJ would make and then what adjustments he would make after that.

Never beat Georgia.
No, he didn't. I stand by my stance they we likely would have beaten them in 2008/2009 with Chan at the helm.

If you are pissed off at losing 2009, despite having a better team the UGAg, then I don't know what to say. Tenuta would have eaten that gagger team alive in 2009.

But, we beat UGAg and started our slow descent into mediocrity, save a few years. I don't recall Chan breaking the bowl streak nor having a losing record.

Flunkout brought it up.
OK. And I'll repeat. Playing "what if" is f'ing stupid.

Gailey never beat UGA. Johnson did but it's worthless to speculate on "one busted play" because, for instance, it wasn't just the dropped 4th down pass by Bebe that beat us. They ran it down our damn throat that night and we could not/did not adjust and stop the run. Unfortunately, I remember it quite well because I sat on the 40 yard line and had to suffer through it with a host of UGAg fans right beside me.

Gailey never had a losing season either. Gailey didn't break one of the longest bowl streaks in college football

And I will never forget the refs assisting UGAg with a fumble recovery which was run back for a TD against Reggie. He was ööööing down. The refs were holding players back.

They did it to Justin Thomas too. As I recall, we still came back and won that game.

May be my last post on Stingtalk, but just wanted to say to the Johnson/Option haters among you...you have paid your pittance and are forgiven. You reap what you sowed and hopefully learned the valuable lesson of jumping on the "fresh new fads". You had to sit and watch offenses that every junior high in America is running (some more effectively), soaking in the irony that you had spent the last few years of the Johnson era thinking the triple option was simplistic. You refused to hear the dread in opposing coaches voices when they talked about playing GT...haven't heard that in the last few years, have you?

All in all , GT fans deserved better, except the ones who didn't appreciate a coach and system that went to multiple Orange Bowls and beat Georgia multiple times.

Best of luck to the Yellow Jackets going forward.
PJ would punch you in the face for making this post.

Hook, line, sinker. Well played.

Yes we did. Thank God Justin Thomas decided to come to GT instead of Bama or our downfall would have been much swifter

Makes point about drifting in into mediocrity.
Justifies believing his made up hypothetical and diss of CPJ with the ultimate stat of mediocrity.

also: Chan never beat UGA.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Germans?
Don't stop him; he's on a roll.

Chan was given 5 seasons after flunkgate. We were lucky to have done as well as we did. You can thank Chan for Demaryus, Michael Johnson, Nesbitt, our DL.....he may not have beaten UGAg in the 5 he had, but I still say we would have beaten them in 2008 and 2009 anyway.

2009 was the worst defensive collapse I have ever seen when we have that much talent on the field. We can be proud of 2008, and thankfully Samuel fumbled that kickoff, but with Renfree at QB, Chan finally got his QB.

Another counterfactual is Stephon Tuitt coming to GT and us probably beating Georgia another time or two--at least once (2013). You can play the hypotheticals both ways.

Some other names to consider:
Travis Custis
Tre Flowers
Marcus Marshall
Dedrick Mills
Jaylend Ratliffe
Dalvin Tomlinson

I have always maintained that 2009 UGA was the most important game in GT football history since the 1990 National Championship. No doubt the players felt some of that pressure to try to be the first team since GG to go 2 in a row and win at home against UGA. Very sad day. Probably a lot of uncalled holding taking place. Then the dropped pass. Very sad. Would’ve liked to have seen how a well executed drive finished.

It’s too bad Chan could never beat UGA.

I'm still passed you guys wouldn't shut up and let us hire Spurrier when we had the chance. No, you wanted Curry. Couldn't have a non Tech man running the show. Well, just look at how many nattys we missed out on. Look how many zingers he would have stuck in Ugags face. Some of you are just beyond help.
