The reason we need to run Oliver at QB is that he’s best at the only viable offense we can run at this point. If we had an OL that could set a pocket, I’m sure Lucas would be just fine.

I agree with you on the flip-flopping of QB’s. Problem is, don’t think GC agrees.

I don't mind some of the flip flopping of QBs. I don't like that he says it is because of ATL.

I like ATL, it is a fine way to build a roster and player depth and works at most positions BUT QB is different. When you are playing 2nd grade flag football, everyone knows who the QB is and talks about him. Who is QB1 and QB2 is a discussion at every level of football. No one really cares who the starting safety is. For Collins to ignore this reality and think he can say, our QB situation is determined by ATL is silly. He has to know it but likely doesn't want to talk specifics about the position. He likely doesn't want to be critical of any of the QBs in public. That is fine but he has to find another way to discuss the situation or it is going to be something that always makes him look silly or ignorant.

SO he could say something like: we don't have a great QB for our system, it is going to take recruiting and development to get to where we need to be. That QB might be on the roster now but they need development to get there. Currently we are trying to use what our QBs do best in situations that allow them to succeed. I'm not playing multiple QBs just because; we think it gives us the best chance to win games. We will adjust as their performance and the team situation changes.

If Oliver isn't the future at QB, I don't think he is, this team needs to find a place for him on the field. The guy is shifty and he appears to be our only play maker to date. Whether it be RB, slot, and/or return team, he seems to be the only one that has made plays.

Totally agree. Gotta get him on the field somehow. If Graham is the guy at QB (and I hope he is), I'd love to see GT use Oliver like the Saints are using Taysom Hill.

Yes, yes, yes. He's just enough of a passing threat that teams have to respect the possibility, but he's also so versatile that you can hand it off or even split him out wide. He needs to be on the field.

How many other teams could let their QB return a kickoff before the game-tying drive? It sounds crazy, but honestly it's the only reason we even got into FG range. The funny thing is, if you rewatch the play you'll see that the blocking wasn't even good at all. He just made people miss and created his own lane.

Anybody think Yates might get ATL after the bye week? I saw him play a ton in HS against high level competition and am fairly confident that he is a more polished and accurate passer than anybody that we are playing. Not sure how his arm strength or athletic ability compares.

Go watch Toby's film. Looks pretty polished as well.

I know Yates played in the highest classification, but most of those kids he faced are not in P5 conferences today, and for the ones that are, they are likely not even starting. They were also 17/18 years old. Milton's championship opponent is not even close to the worst ACC defense. Hell, you could take the best position player from every team he played against, and that statement would still hold true.

Maybe he's great, but if he was QB4 to start the season, I can't see him jumping a spot unless there's an injury situation.

This "rotation" doesn't appeal to me in the least. If it must be used at least give each QB several series to try and establish some rhythm (1 qt. each would be nice) then let the hot hand play. I just don't "see" the current usage. I for one think Oliver should start and go from there--ATL be damned!

His placement on the depth chart may be a byproduct of when he got here and the intent by the coaching staff to redshirt him. Also, I'm sure the mental part of the college game takes some time to get a true freshman acclimated. Plenty of excellent QBs were at the bottom of the depth chart after their first fall camp. It doesn't mean he isn't the QB of the future.

I am not talking about a highlight tape. I saw him play live probably 20 times. I am no scout but his mechanics and accuracy seem far superior to Tobias and anybody else that I've seen here in a while.

I wonder if Yates would have been recruited by CGC, he was a PJ offensive recruit originally. He seems like a fit for an Oklahoma offense, something I don't see us being for quite a while. My point is if he can help today, they probably should use him today. Future QB recruits will probably look much different anyway.

I've got a different take

Playing Oliver in a run heavy version of our O hurts GT FB in the future, next season

Since it is unlikely that a TFr or Portal guy will start at QB in 20, these Reps & these games need to mean something

Playing Oliver in a run heavy scheme just to go 6-6 and earn a low tier Bowl will hurt us next season because Oliver & our other QBs will not have gotten better at what we hope to be doing next season

If we're gonna lose, let's lose by doing something that will pay dividends in 20

QB keepers to beat Citadel won't be of any value come 2020

Kinda amazing that after 9 months in this new system our QBs can't dink & dunk until we get to the RZ and then run the ball to score TDs to beat lesser teams

Is it the QBs that can't dink & dunk, or is it the playcalling (or a little of both)? It feels like most of the routes the WRs are running are for 15+ yards. The few short routes I can even recall being throw were to the TE. It feels like the majority of passes to our receivers are homerun balls (kind of like our passing attack out of the flexbone).

Yea I thinks that's mostly fair. At the top of 7a in GA though you might be surprised at how many of the starters end up at a P5 school, I know that i was. For some of these teams it's more than half of the starters and virtually all of the rest of the starters will end up playing somewhere.

Grayson for example last year had 13 3 stars and above who were seniors. So that didn't include any underclassman. They might of had 35 kids on the roster who end up at a P5 school, maybe less.

...And wombat's point is that the defenses in P5 ball are ALL 3,4, and 5 stars.

And Tobias threw for over 4000 yards in HS too (in a run-heavy offense). Too many are focusing on his limitations to the extent of overlooking what he does very well in the game. I think it's blatantly unfair to declair at this point (after 30 college attempts) that T.O. cannot pass effectively enough to make an offense work. You cannot convince me that one can't come up with an offensive game plan that plays to his strengths of running the zone read stuff along with modest, well-designed short passing attack with the occasional deep shots. At least give him the opportunity to show it in the regular flow of a game (and no, the Clemson game should not be counted -- total talent mismatch).

All I know is that when Tobias has been given the opportunity to start and complete a drive, the offense has appeared to have a plan, some flow, and some success. He may be he is not the long term answer, but i want to win as much as possible now and I believe TO gives us the best chance at this time.
