Key Fans, I Have Questions:

Key took over at a terrible time and made us a better football team. He deserves credit for that. Thank him and send him on his way.

Being better than Geoff is not a valid reason to hire someone. That is virtually every coach in college football, including the coach of NIU and The Citadel.

Seriously, at his first press conference, Key emphasized that we had zero punt blocks. That was the bar he had to rise above. Again, credit to him for recognizing that and making it happen.

And the ACC Coastal sucks, as evidenced by the fact UNC and Pitt are its top 2 teams. Damn, even Geoff beat unc

Let's be consistent. If we aren't allowed moral victories then we aren't allowed moral defeats either. UNC and Pitt are very high on the list of things that he could realistically have accomplished. Can't grade the guy on opportunities he didn't have. We all would have liked to get more consistent production and beat our bad opponents too, so he had downs and ups, but you're talking like it's all downs. I think you ought to try out the the idea that since we came from zero and ended on a pretty satisfying note that we are at least moving in the right direction. We may think Chadwell or Fritz were surer bets, but this guy isn't bad.

I can agree with the first two sentences. Logical points. I tried to give him credit for the ups. Reminds me of Roger Millers song:
Every town,
Has its ups and downs
Sometimes ups, outnumber the downs
Not in Nottingham.

Key isn’t a clown, but I’m really down and out on the hire.

  • How do you explain away the fact that he failed miserably as our offensive line coach for 4 seasons? To the point where we were blaming him for losses? The undisciplined nature of the OL for 4 seasons?
  • How do you explain that this guy was tagged "Assistant Head Coach" during 4 of the most dog öööö seasons of Tech football in history?
  • How do you explain his absolute dog öööö performance as an OC at UCF? To the point that he had to take a demotion back to OL caoch? They went 0-12, mind you.
  • If he's such a great recruiter and builds such strong bonds with the kids, why did our key players already hit the portal? He couldn't even hang on to them?
I'm just asking...
Jamey Chadwell and Willie Fritz turned the program down. Key got the job because the kids played hard and came in on the cheap. I will concede that he is an upgrade over Clown Collins, but time will tell if we can get back to the annual 6 and 7 win season and a bowl game, however the decision has been made and we should let this guy put a plan in place, recruit, conjure up some NIL $, and let’s see what happens.

If all of the above is true it simply means Cabrera was blowing smoke from jump.

These are fair questions wether you like them or not. They are legitimate questions.

At the end of the day, this hire is a major gamble. Let's hope it pays off.

There’s a difference in a guaranteed $10 million buy out for a HC and paying top dollar for assistants. I can only imagine you realize this but are whining b/c you’re butthurt over Key’s hire.
Key isn’t good enough to win without quality assistants. If both Chadwell and Fritz got the offer, and turned Tech down after the interview, it’s almost certain that it is because the money wasn’t there to land them or to land them and allow them to pay for decent staffs. If so Tech settled on a lesser coach because of money. Not much to hang high hopes on.

I think there was probably something to Chadwell not being able to bring his defensive staff (who gave up 49 to a 3-win old dominion team and 47 to JMU last week). I don’t want that defense so if he was pushing for that - good for both sides to walk away. To your point, I believe that Chadwell can’t win in P5 without quality assistants either.

Fritz was probably a money thing (buyout for us and what he wanted). He’s also 62 and would be a rebuild guy (to your point - not much to hang your hopes on).

What is driving me crazy is the vast difference you and others who are so anti-Key are seeing between Key and those 2 (or those 2 plus Deion).

Key - young, unproven, decent coaching tree, in my opinion impressive interim resume.

Chadwell - young, impressive offense, no P5 experience, defense leaves questions

Fritz - Good track record/history, likely short-time coach due to age, no P5 track record.

Why do people see Chadwell and Fritz as miles ahead of Key? They are all gambles. I guess it’s b/c of Key’s tenure as OL coach. I get some of that - when he got the interim job I was very down on him too. I thought it was extremely unlikely he’d change my mind, but he did as the HC. Are there still questions? Yes. Are there still questions about the others? Yes!

You’ve been a member since 2002 and obviously you were born in 1865 since Tech didn’t start till 1885, and you only posted 140 some messages in 20 years but you bring wisdom oh wise one.

Evidently, all we care about now is moral victories, and getting boatraced by FSU, Miami and Uga are somehow really awesome moral victories.

We were UVAs only ACC win.
Remember that time we beat Clemson by knocking out their starting QB and they were like top 15?

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.

Remember last year when we lost several close games and the clown would bemoan the fact that we were a play or two away from winning the game. When y’all were debating on this board last year whether we should keep the clown many of you pointed to that fact……that we were so close

Now we at least have a coach that is preparing us for games in such a way to win some of those close games

Most competitive games are always going to be decided by a couple of plays and you can easily point to a couple of plays that one team took advantage of to win

Doesn't matter. He is a "tech man" and that is all that matters. They did the "tech man" thing with Roof, how did that work? Did they the "tech man" thing with Collins, how did that work? It doesn't matter. He is a "tech man", so abilities be damned. I see Key as nothing more than a .500 head coach, at best. I just hope he didn't get signed to some insane deal. But, as usual. Key will be defended left and right, until things are really bad. Because.......he's a "tech man".

Riiiight. I’ll bet you believe that Chadwell turned us down for a shot at USF, eh?

I expect I’ll have you back on my ignore list soon enough. Quit yer bitchin’
