Key HAS to be a serious candidate now

The fact that Key oversaw the worst unit on the team for several years should cause anyone to be skeptical of him being a head coach. But this kind of win definitely made me take notice and entertain the possibility. That's the really the bottom line. The Duke game will speak volumes.
You notice how much better they got as the game went on Saturday? I'm hoping something clicked when they were finally getting timely feedback. Heck, Thacker looked competent for 3.5 quarters.

I'm reading between lines admittedly, but everything points to ineffective use of practice time as someone was trying to revolutionize coaching rather than stick to established best practices. The result was every unit was incompetent beyond reason and playing way below capability. Brent has reorganized the practice schedule for 1 week and every unit looked improved, results after the bye week will be telling, but if we win this week the hype train is going to be real. We have a real football coach now and all of the position coaches have a chance to show that they weren't the reason things failed. Early returns are that they and the players were not the problem.

Coaching for their very jobs is also effective motivation I should think. Irony, the coaching staff hired to help with the greatest transition in history will have a chance to actually BE the coaching staff for the greatest transition in the history of coaching.

My problem with Key is he has not shown his ability to recruit top talent or development them for his position group. Oline has been weak spot every year he has been here and they don’t look any better in year 4 then they did year 1.

Am I now supposed to assume he can recruit an entire roster? If he is head coach, there better be a plan to bring in a lot of help for recruiting purposes.

Everyone just drunk off a W..... D looked the same as they did against Clemson for 3Q and the majority of UCF. Caught a lot of breaks in Pitt game

When was the last time defense and special teams kept us in a game like that? I surely didn’t see that coming.

So you're saying we should bring Tashard Choice back? I wholeheartedly agree!

Know how I know real in-game coaching was going on?

Joe Fusile sat the bench after about 3 series when it was obvious he was in over his head.

I sure would enjoy having a private conversation with him and getting his view of the program. I don’t see him ever coming back.

I'll also add this:

I was very drunk watching the game, but I remember multiple sacks being whiffed blocks by RBs or TEs. One, in particular, the OL slid left and TE kicked out right. The defender shot the gap between the TE and RT, right into the RB who ducked him and went out for a route. I'm 90% sure that scheme is for the RB to block, or at least chip, anyone coming thru that gap and option to the route if no one is coming. Either that or the TE didn't hear the line call and got too wide, but the gap seemed intentional for the RB option route.

Lots of people saying that but no one mentions what he has had to work with. Even now we are full of freshmen and sophomores.

This was true literally a week ago when most here were demanding Key get shown the door along with Collins. He had 4 years to develop the OL and it's the worst unit on the team.

Like I said, I'm taking notice after Saturday's win, but I'm more inclined to think it was a one time thing. I need to see more.

TE blocking is atrocious.

I am sure it’s not in the playbook, but the old Maryland I formation that O’Leary used to use in similar situations as the 4th and Goal would have been cool. Seemed like it worked every time back then.

I’m very happy they won. It was sorely needed and happened at the perfect time.

One win isn’t a trend though. I’d like to see Key’s team continue with the progress we saw against Pitt and hopefully win some back-to-back games (starting with Duke), which hasn’t happened in a long time.

I remember there was one or two people talking about the practice issue toward the end of or just after last year, but the recent press conferences have been the first admission of them from the program itself. This is part of why I wonder how much that win is due to Key being coach vs how much it is due to Collins not being coach.
