Key post game press conference

Key never said he refused to go in. Not in the post game presser. Said he was emergency available only and not available when Gibson went in. Then no further comments. Key opened up a can of worms with what he did say and then spilled the can over with ambiguity. He’s a dumbass.
LOL. You're reaching.

What are the other interpretations you are thinking of?
Another interpretation is that he is really hurt and the only way he could play is of every other qb we’re out. Not saying it’s correct, but he wasn’t really offering us a lot to go on.

I really struggle with this interperitation, and have for a while.

So Pyron goes down. Sims is really hurt and he can't play, which means we need to put in Gibson even though that means we are virtually guaranteed a loss. That's fine -- Sims's health is more important than a single game, and sending a really hurt player in is a recipe for sustaining even worse (possibly career ending) injuries.

Let's say Gibson goes down. Now we send out a really hurt Sims to play? It wasn't possible to play a really hurt Sims when we could just take a guaranteed loss with Gibson, but now that Gibson is out it's okay to play a really hurt Sims?

Is the risk to his health not worth it if we could lose with Gibson but is worth it if we would have to lose with the fourth string QB instead?

Define “not available”. I define it as refused. He is medically cleared. If you are medically cleared and not available then what are the other options other than refused
You can make all of the uninformed assumptions you want to. I decline to. Key could make it clear but he prefers to keep things muddled. He probably values scapegoats himself.

Key couldn’t say “refused to go in” because it would make Key look weak for not doing something about the situation. Key was mad so he had to drop a clue as to what the situation actually was. Key also doesn’t want to get a reputation as a coach who goes out of his way to blame players, as Key will be interviewing for jobs in the future.

That could all be correct. But it’s still all assumptions. It’s also kinda unnecessary by him.

No...he really cannot. And, if you think a coach could survive directly calling out a player who claims to be injured in his post-game press conference, then Key isn't the one who's the "dumbass" here.

He has no need to call out any player or create a narrative that would lead to such assumptions. Now go big cry again :)

He was answering 2 separate, multi-part questions from reporters asking directly about why Jeff Sims didn't go into the game, LOL. How the hell do you suggest he do that any more subtly than he did?

A reporter directly asked him "Was Sims cleared to play?"

What non-ambiguous answer that wouldn't call out Sims do you think he should have given to that question?
It's wild how naive people are being about this situation. Clearly, Sims has quit but wants to remain a 'member' of the team for whatever reasons he has. Key likely wants to kick him off, but there's some sort of external/political pressure to play along with the situation. Bizarre scenario.

I sat in section 103 with my two sons. We noticed Sims A LOT during the game. He had zero limp and huge smile most of the game. What was insane as a former coach to see this former starter upperclassman be such a HUGE distraction!!! He was cutting up and have a good time bouncing from groups of players. He was socializing more than watching the game with a doubt. I would notice key parts of the game where the offensive unit and team huddled together talking and he is about 30 yards away with a group of redshirt freshman’s in sweat pants. He had no desire or interest what was going on. The clown recruited this prize recruit which sums up his era perfectly. We need to remove this cancerous tumor from our team and anyone remotely like this. Against UVA when things got tough for him, he made a horrible interception in end zone and got yanked i was watching him and i said he is done at Tech. For some reason with him and Gibbs you just instantly know they don’t wanna be here anymore. No shame in that but to sit there and be a distraction to your team who is fighting hard and just quit to me that is the ultimate shame
This says it all. FU sims.

That was incredible. Cleared to play, “but at the time Pyron was injured he was not available to play. I’ll just leave it at that.”

End this for both parties. Leave #10 at home for trips to Chapel Hill and Athens. Best wishes to him in his future endeavors.
Coach did everything he could to maintain his composure and professionalism without calling it like it really is.

Don’t really understand our coaching philosophy with Jeff. Why is he getting practice reps if he can’t or refuses to play? If he don’t wanna be here just send him on his way. Maybe he was promosed something on the NIL front that is contingent on him staying on the team through year end.
Maybe then a good swift kick in the ass as he’s being forced out the door can be looked at as a true life lesson.

Why are you sticking up for these guys? It’s a different era of college football. These people are in their own world, fraternity, etc. and it only tangentially involves the people who actually make the product enjoyable, meaningful, and contiguous: the alumni and fans of the actual school/team

I can't make sense of the "emergency basis" thing. I'll try to be generous and assume good faith though. Maybe Sims doesn't feel 100% or is afraid of reinjury, so he told the coaches he'd play if it's an emergency. But they never spelled out what an "emergency" is. So today went like:

Key: Help! Our QB has gone down in a 1-score game. The team's bowl eligibility is at stake.
Sims: Not emergency enough.
Key: öööö! Put in the bad Zach!

It could be that he's cleared, but to sims it doesn't feel right still. Maybe the throwing motion feels off, maybe the fear of injury, maybe the yips,... Hard to say. If he doesn't have his game face on he shouldn't play.

It could also be that he has to mentally adjust after having lost the starting spot. It sounds like he made the wrong choice yesterday, but the big question is whether he fixes it tomorrow. Does he leave the team or does he stay and put the team first?
