Kirby Smart to dwagland

I wasn't a big tech fan until I enrolled in 2003. who were we considering before settling for Chan?

The interim coach Mac Whorter (a fan favorite) was given a courtesy interview but was never a serious candidate. Some still female dog about him not being given the job, but he's never been given serious consideration as a HC anywhere in D1.

Tom O'Brian (HC at BC at the time) reportedly was a serious contender, but he withdrew when the Hill refused to grant more academic exceptions.

Ty Willingham was supposedly interviewed as well.

Note: the above is what I recall from the time and was based on hearsay from people who may or may not have had inside info.

For anyone who doesn't remember, the other big names when we hired CPJ were Muschamp (failed at Florida) and Neuheisel (failed at UCLA) with a dark horse run from Chris Hatcher (failed at Ga Southern).

We seem to do a decent job of choosing out of the available options, but man our talent pool seems to have a low success rate.

Saban's strategy is pretty straight forward:
  1. Know a bunch of NFL coaches
  2. Have NFL coaches write letters to recruits indicating that sitting on the bench for Alabama is enough to get a tryout for camp
  3. Saban uses letters to get the best talent in the country
  4. Use talent to win games over less talented teams
Any indication that Smart can pull of the first two bullets from accomplishing the last two? Those first two bullets are all that separate any coach from NC contender.

As much as I don't like Saban for how he treats some of his kids and what he did at Miami, he DOES develop talent pretty well. Granted, getting 5*s to live up to their potential when you have a shelf full of them puts him at a huge advantage.

Additional to that, he's a genius when it comes to coaching linebackers.

Nick Saban has Alabama in a bidding war against Georgia to keep the Alabama Strength and Conditioning coach Scott Cochran. Sounds like Kirby might not be leaving on good terms after all.... Very much a dick move to your former employer.

This is actually pretty significant. Cochran is one of if not the best S&C guy in the country. He is one of the main reasons why Sabans teams are so good. I don't think it's a jerk move necessarily by Smart, more that they know what value Cochran is to any program he is at...

Those names were bandied about by fans on talk shows and bulletin boards, but I really don't think they were ever seriously considered. I heard Johnson was the man in October, long before Chan was canned.

Cutcliffe too, if I remember correctly. Hatcher was a scorching hot name at the time.

Jeremy Pruitt officially OUT at Georgia

Smart is staying on at Bama through the bowl season

I've been trying to click the link that backs up your "official" statement but I think my computer might not be working. Can you link it again?

Smart is betting on himself and his D in the playoffs. Looking for the bonus $$ that comes with winning another Natty.

Probably true, and another feather in his cap for recruiting purposes. (possibly a bit late)

I don't remember anyone talking about Ty. Edsal (Uconn at the time) was also on the short list.

So he isn't exactly officially out. Just rumored to be out IF Smart is the man.

And who will coach the Dwags in the bowl game?

Schotty? Pruitt?

It sounds like he is out either way, but they will wait to fire him. If he leaves before Smart arrives then they don't owe him a buyout.

Former player and now coach Bryan McClendon will be the interim.

Why does Smart arriving have anything to do with Pruitt's contract with UGA. I read that he is owed the remainder of his contract no matter what. Unless he leaves of course.

The way that the OC and DC contracts are set up, Georgia does not owe them a buyout if they leave on their own accord. If they are fired (i.e., forced out when Smart gets there), they will be owed what is contractually obligated to them. That's the only thing that is "relative" to Smarts arrival on the coaching staff. The other thing that is interesting with their contracts are if they find work elsewhere during the year following them being fired, Georgia only owes them the portion of the year they were out of work. Unlike Richt, which they owe the whole buyout regardless of if he works or not.

Smart is not going to retain him. At this point it is just a matter of money. If he leaves on his own, he isn't owed a buyout. Word is he is a hot item on the circuit, so UGA is hoping he is gone.

Which is why he'd be an idiot to quit.
