Kirby Smart to dwagland

Plus, why would UGA put a guy in with no HC experience when there are a lot of really solid candidates out there who have proven their ability to lead a team?

My guess is that the "big money" dwag boosters are pulling the strings on this one and the AD is between a rock and a hard place. The typical dwag fan is stupid enough to believe the drivel coming out of AD's mouth about hiring a search firm to aid in the hiring process for the new head coach. They didn't fire Richt without having agreed in principle with the next head coaching hire. With Richt's record, they'd look more like buffoons than they already are without having the "money folks" hand picked successor.

This is very similar to why Les Miles is still at LSU. They wanted him out of there, but they couldn't persuade Jimbo Fisher to leave FSU.

I don't really get it re: UGA and Kirby Smart. Like it or not as a Tech fan, but UGA is a really attractive job. Possibly top 5 in CFB, definitely top 10. They could call someone proven like Kyle Wittingham and he'd listen. Mark Dantonio would probably entertain a phone call. Gary Patterson, Tom Herman, the list goes on. Why would you skip over all of those guys and go directly for Kirby Smart? Just doesn't make sense to me.

Dantonio signed a pretty big extension last year, IIRC, so Sparty has him locked up for a big chunk of change. And he's one really bad referee call away from being 12-0 and one win away from being in the playoffs.

At Georgia, he'd have to deal with an improving Florida, a Tennessee program that appears to be getting better, in small steps, the always mercurial Auburn (because you really never are sure if you're going to get greatness or crap year in and year out) and then LSU and Alabama either in a title game or every few years on the schedule.

At Sparty, he gets Ohio State and Michigan every year. And that's it for guaranteed tough games.

to win the SEC, you have to beat Alabama. Who knows best how to beat Alabama??? maybe a guy that has been coaching with Saban at Alabama for years and years??

also, KS played at UGA and is an up and coming name to make the boosters feel good, especially with his UGA roots
he is a pretty good hire, imo
thats why i talked about this exact scenario some time back

FWIW he's still 1 win away from the playoffs.

even Hugh Freeze, he actually beat Bama...

Just thankful they didn't hire a coach from the offensive side of things. To me, I would fear UGAg with an innovative offensive minded head coach working along with a good offensive coordinator. A good DC can work on an island, IMO. Designing offensive plays and strategy is much tougher. Would rather have a knuckle dragger like Smart in there than a dynamic Chip Kelly type.

^^^Amen....Smart may God forbid turn out to be great at ug but he's a huge unknown at this point. Hell nobody really knows how much of Bama's Def success was him or Saban. Chip Kelly, Herman, Fuente etc are scarier prospects. Alums going back to head coach at their alma mater are disasters more often than not.

Saban's strategy is pretty straight forward:
  1. Know a bunch of NFL coaches
  2. Have NFL coaches write letters to recruits indicating that sitting on the bench for Alabama is enough to get a tryout for camp
  3. Saban uses letters to get the best talent in the country
  4. Use talent to win games over less talented teams

Any indication that Smart can pull of the first two bullets from accomplishing the last two? Those first two bullets are all that separate any coach from NC contender.

can Smart even write? He went to UGA.

Past 10 years, only 5 times has the SEC champ beaten Alabama.

Crazy, man. I just went and took a look at the SECCG on Wikipedia. Nick Saban has made 6 of the last 12 SECCGs from 2003 LSU to 2015 Alabama. He has only lost once in the game - to Urban Meyer's Florida in 2008.

Saban reaches the SECCG 50% of the time, wins the SECCG 80% of the time, and wins a national championship an average of every 3 years. He is currently tied for 2nd in most national championships behind Bear Bryant.

Fun fact: McElwain was the offensive coordinator that year as well as the next year, when Alabama beat Florida soundly. As we all know, McElwain is now at Florida this year and led them to the SECCG to face his mentor.

I was listening to the Falcons pre-game show Sunday when the news broke that Richt was toast. The conversation they interrupted to break that news was about the possibility of Chip Kelly returning to the college ranks. The idea of him taking the reigns in the cesspool was unsettling to say the least. Given the choice, I'll roll the dice with another defensive-minded Saban disciple running the show in Athens over a guy that knows how to squeeze every single point out of the players he's given.

ug fans actually believe recruiting is going to dramatically improve with Smart vs. Richt, who i thought was an awesome recruiter if nothing else

It's gonna be hard for me to go along with derailing this thread in favor of another discussion on admissions. If we were getting our doors blown off every Thanksgiving, sure. But that isn't the case. This year the gasping remains of our decimated roster sucked a little bit more than Georgia. The two years before that we split overtime results with them.

There's a conversation to be had about academic constraints, but I'm not interested in doing it if the conversation begins by pretending that Georgia is blowing us out every year and it doesn't make a difference for us who their coach is.

Oh God, here we go. Fact is we have won twice in the last 15 years. I don't care how close the games are...

While your list of feats is certainly impressive, the 80% mark is a little bit disingenuous. He's truly won the SECCG 33% of the time. But he's won 80% of the one's he's participated in.

That 80% figure really isn't that impressive once you consider how weak the SEC east has been since Meyer left.
