Willliam Alexander. There used to be a coliseum named for him.
Doesn't the fact that you had to go back 100 years to find one tell you something? Can you name any since then? Certainly not Bill Curry or Pepper Rodgers. Dodd tried his best to get former players and staff members to come back, and waddayaknow, every one of them turned him down, besides Curry and Rodgers. They knew the odds would be against them. Oops, I DID forget one who worked out....Buddy Fowlkes came back as head track coach and was a winner.

Three pages in and you knuckleheads still haven’t figured it out.

Deion Sanders.

A simple, "you're right; I was wrong - I never heard of William Alexander before" would have sufficed.

I'll give you one point though for the Buddy Fowlkes reference. He was there when I was there, and he was a good guy.

Of course, I know who Bill Alexander was. Like Heisman, Dodd, and Ross, he won a NC as HC. But, like I said, you had to go back 100 years to find a Tech man, and I had to point out Buddy Fowlkes to you. I'm still waiting for you to name another Tech man who "came home" and did anything. And, BTW, I left out Bill Fulcher in my list of Tech men who were coaches. I thought he might have been an exception to the rule, but he let the Tech swamp run him off because of Eddie McAshan.

Rock Fulcher's main problem was WackoWife #1 (#2 is her clone).... The Swamp was his excuse, but he bailed due to HRH#1.

Whoever it is may have to hire a new basketball coach as well next spring

Well, I can't deny that he had a wacky wife, and then followed that one up with another one. I knew the second one, and she was definitely a wacko. So how do you know that story? Are you from Augusta? But I still think the McAshan mess was the main reason.

RUMINT amongst the FB Letterwinners... and as a Student Assistant with the Freshmen Team in 1972.... but the whole McAshan scenario didn't do Fulcher any favors, he'd had a snootfull as documented by much more well-known folks than me, and decided the real estate game in Augusta was more to his liking. Rock was ready to punch out after the 1972 season & Dodd convinced him to stay for 1973 so as not to kill recruiting.

Sounds like you know a little bit more about the situation than I do. I am from Augusta, and Fulcher was one of my childhood heroes when he played at Richmond Academy. My dad thought the world of him and was really excited when he was named HC. He was always convinced that Bill (I had forgotten the "Rock" nickname) would make a GREAT HC for Tech, so he was very disappointed when he quit .... as was I. I really don't remember anything about his first wife, but you were spot on about his second one. I grew up with her; we lived in the same neighborhood and went to all the same schools. After he dumped her, she then married the mayor of Augusta and had the gall to keep the Fulcher name as a double name --- Gwen Fulcher-Young. I met Bill personally for the first time maybe 10 years ago, and we talked a lot whenever we ran into each other. The last time I saw him was back in the Spring, when we had a multi-year HS reunion. He appeared to be getting pretty frail, but I guess at age 85+, that's to be expected. I probably had not seen him in about 3 years prior to the reunion, and he's definitely gone downhill in that time. His 3rd wife still looked great though. Thanks for giving you me your take on that situation. I learned something new, and I appreciate it.

Bill was/is a great guy & had no problems getting great assistants.... future HFCs like Steve Sloan & Rex Dockery, plus keeping Dick Bestwick and Jerry Glanville among others, were great recruiters as well as coaches.

Bill had been an assistant under Carson in 1969, then got the HFC job & was successful at what was then U. of Tampa in 1970 & 1971. When Carson got fired after the 1971 Peach Bowl fiasco vs Ole Miss, Fulcher was a very popular choice among the players for the job.

But it was 1972 and a lot of things totally unrelated to FB, GT, or FB at GT were swirling around. 1973 was no better.... Fulcher's departure is briefly addressed on p46 of Kim King's "Tales from the Georgia Tech Sideline."

Next time you see Bill, tell him hi from DeepSnap though he won't remember the walk-on from Dalton. Also, a few years back at a Kiwanis pancake day at a local HS, I ran into Bill freshman roommate, a former mayor of Decatur, AL, who said to say hi.
