Bill was/is a great guy & had no problems getting great assistants.... future HFCs like Steve Sloan & Rex Dockery, plus keeping Dick Bestwick and Jerry Glanville among others, were great recruiters as well as coaches.
Bill had been an assistant under Carson in 1969, then got the HFC job & was successful at what was then U. of Tampa in 1970 & 1971. When Carson got fired after the 1971 Peach Bowl fiasco vs Ole Miss, Fulcher was a very popular choice among the players for the job.
But it was 1972 and a lot of things totally unrelated to FB, GT, or FB at GT were swirling around. 1973 was no better.... Fulcher's departure is briefly addressed on p46 of Kim King's "Tales from the Georgia Tech Sideline."
Next time you see Bill, tell him hi from DeepSnap though he won't remember the walk-on from Dalton. Also, a few years back at a Kiwanis pancake day at a local HS, I ran into Bill freshman roommate, a former mayor of Decatur, AL, who said to say hi.
