Official everyone laugh at uga and Kirby Shart thread

Article on Saban's recruiting profile is an interesting read. Wanting to recruit NFL sized players and actually being able to do it are two different things. I'm sure all teams want players like that, but Saban actually can get them...something other non-football factory schools are not going to be able to imitate.

I found this snippet particularly interesting:
“He (Saban) would take an athlete with size before a natural 5’8” corner,” said Kevin Jackson, a former Tide All-American safety and defensive coordinator at Dothan (Ala.) High School. “If a kid fits their profile, Saban is confident he can teach that bigger athlete to do the things they want him to do in their defense.’'

Sounds like the exact opposite of what we do in recruiting. Tech seem to recruit successful players at the high school level regardless of ideal measurables. Then we (fans) complain about talent gap and us looking small compared to Vandy, etc...It's because we aren't bringing in the big bodied athletes and coaching them up. Other coaches try this too...and many are not nearly as successful as Saban, btw.

I still think it's ludicrous to say UGA is bad because they don't have the right player's for Kirby's scheme...Have you looked at their players? These kids are NFL bodied kids. It amazes me every year how much bigger and more athletic UGA looks than us. Smart is just not getting the best out of their team, and I'm confident that will continue to be the case until they run him out of town.

Why do you guys want him to be Ray Goff? Didn't Goff go something like 5-2 against us? I'd rather he be a new level of lowness - someone we go undefeated against.
Ray Goof had the advantage of pretty much no internet then and angry UGAG fans could only voice their displeasure by calling Bulldog Hotline with Larry Munson on Sunday Night(it was so bad they stopped taking calls in 1993). Thats the only way Ray Goof lasted from 1989-1995(along with Vince Dooley, his buddy, being UGAG AD at the time).

That seems like mostly BS to me. If you get bigger, stronger kids than everyone else you are going to be better than everyone else, all other things being equal.

And he gets bigger kids.

I think that might be undervaluing what Saban is doing as a coach. I seem to remember an article some years ago, I believe during the Grantham days, that UGA had the biggest defensive line in the country... It might have been Arkansas' offensive line, not sure, but I remember the takeaway being that size isn't everything. What seems most incredible to me is Saban's ability to line up the measurables of what works at a position level in the NFL to his team, and then consistently get a high level of play out of those players. (Granted, most are entering as 5 star athletes, so I'm sure their overall fitness and technique are top notch to begin with.)

The point I always make to Bama fans is that to put it in NFL terms, any team will dominate if they get 10 first round picks every year. That's essentially what Bama does.

What might help level the playing field a bit would be to reduce the number of scholarships allowed. That would help spread some of the talent around a bit more.

I would say Saban's real talent is talking kids into coming and playing for him and riding the bench for a couple of years when they could go and start as a freshman for a number of good teams.

Saban also culls. If you want to fix it, make the max every year 20. If you keep everyone and redshirt, you could have 100 players. Transfers count in the 20, so they better be good.

If you drop below 85 you can give walk-ons scholarships.

Saban has multiple NFL coaches send letters to recruits telling them that a benchwarmer on Alabama's team will get you more consideration than a starter on any other team because they know and trust Saban's training.

LOL Goff was going up against you know who who ran the program in the ground. Once O'Leary got it going again Goff was long gone and we were beating his replacement. Goff lost his first two against Coach Ross. Then we made a huge mistake. The sharks are circling in the water and I have no doubt we can not only hang in with the mutts come November 26th but that we can beat them. On their field. Again.

People forget Dooley was wanting to give Goff one more year. The president stepped in and said enough. Dooley also wanted to give Donnan one more year.

That's intentional. It's by design. Paul goes into this a little in that long podcast that dropped this week. If some dude has NFL measurables, and has offers from GT and Bama, who's he going to pick? Bama.

Check out our quarterback. Orange Bowl MVP. Originally a Bama commit. They were going to keep him on the scout team and occasionally use him as a punt returner. Why? Measurables. So we get the Bama recruit because we run something that works outside an NFL framework.

We are a jackal surrounded by lions. Pretending to be a lion would mean we starve. But we can feast on scraps if we know what we're doing. Sorry, that's just the way it is. Get used to it or go get a degree from Bama. It's not like they're hard to get.
