Official GT Head Coach News Thread

Not even close.

The entire football world is recognizing Key right now for a pair of Top-25 road wins and a 4/4 record after inheriting Geoff's mess mid-season. And with no HC experience and a 3rd string QB. I wouldn't give two shakes of he was a UGA grad in that situation.

The "Tech Man" thing only adds to the point that he wants to be here and we can probably save $$$ to spend on support staff.

Over reaching here. The entire football world? We could have very easily lost to Pitt and we beat UNC last year. I’m not turning the keys over to part of the problem.

This sounds like an AD and Pres who have made their decision but still need to run it by some others as courtesy interviews.

Happens all the time when a CEO makes a decision on a hire but needs board members to interview. The board is not going to overrule the CEO unless there’s a major issue, but things aren’t official until they give their thumbs up.

Sounds like an AD and Pres screwed around for two months and accomplished nothing to me. Think they now realize that they have waited too late to make a decision, and that it will end up costing us with players entering the portal and losing commits between now and signing day. The $3M budget also makes is obvious that all the talk about bringing GT back is just pure bullshit. Now we're rushing to hopefully sign a coach no one wants to cover for the incompetence of this search.

So far it sounds like a Coastal Carolina and Tulane coach have been like thanks, but nah. This is starting to get embarrassing and depressing. Nebraska and Wisconsin already got their guy.

Here's the thing that sticks out to me. If it was going to be Key, there's no reason to wait to make an announcement unless Batt is wanting to take 48 hrs to let the dust settle from COFH to make the announcement. If it ends up being Chadwell like everyone has assumed, of course, there wasn't going to be an announcement until after the championship game. I feel like since Nebraska made their choice yesterday, all of the source sites and message boards were trying to make the GT hire yesterday too since us and Nebraska were the longest open jobs out there. People are trying to make something happen and I'm betting Ken got a source to tell him about Fritz. Once he made his tweet, he got a very firm rebuttal from either Cabrera or Batt. The important thing that he found out is that Tech has a letter of understanding with someone, it's either Chadwell, Fritz, or Key. Their just waiting on this weekend's games to conclude before they can release the information. If you don't hear anything from Tech by today, it's not going to be Key. If you don't hear anything out of Tech by Wednesday, I guarantee you it will be Chadwell or Fritz with an announcement on Monday.

I think we can already assume it’s not Key unless everything else got ööööed up by petulant boosters and fans.

I get where you are coming from but it's still hard to tell how much Key and the OL was handcuffed by Collins. Word is that Key was not allowed to bring in some recruits he wanted because Collins wanted to go the portal route and try to patch the OL up with guys ready to play. That backfired in the long run leaving us with no depth or future. Also, it seems there were very few if any full contact, full speed "game" type situations in Collins' practices. That has changed under Key. That is likely why you see improvement in blocking and tackling. Those things are hard to replicate at 1/2 or 3/4 speed.

Fritz by himself is a "meh" hire imo but if he gets some of the names on his staff that are being thrown around, I think most will start to get on board.
Dell would be huge for recruiting South Georgia. Mutt fans recognize him as an outstanding recruiter.

What other names are being mentioned?

I don't think it's safe to assume that. Probably all we can safely assume is that Key was not the 100% first choice, no debate required -- because then you would have already announced him.

But short of that, it's difficult for us to assume anything because we have so little information and the leaks we have gotten have proven to be unreliable. There are multiple ways Key could still be HC without donor interference. Most would agree that Key has done enough to at least be considered for the job, so all it takes is for others to fall through.

Let's say Chadwell interviewed great, he has an exciting offense, super high ceiling, etc. He is the guy. But then he refuses to hire P5 experience for defense, so we won't give him the job. My understanding is that's the latest rumor about why he's not coming. Now our #1 guy is out.

Next up is BOB. Big name, lots of experience, proven to be able to navigate a difficult situation in college. However, it turns out he's too expensive and/or would rather go to the NFL. Now our #2 guy is out.

After that is Fritz. He's in the middle of a super successful season, busy schedule, we weren't able to interview him until yesterday. Obviously there are some concerns about his age and lack of P5 experience -- what if he wasn't able to alleviate those concerns or insisted on sticking with an FCS coaching staff as Chadwell did? That would mean our #3 guy is out with no donor interference.

Has Key done enough to be #4 in line? If we're already down on our list that far, even if there is someone we'd like more for the next season or two, is it possible Batt would rather sign Key to a cheap deal with an easy buyout so he can have another shot in a couple years if necessary?

This is all pretty plausible to me. Of course, it's also plausible that Batt decided on Fritz, something accurate finally did leak, and boosters lost their minds and are doing everything possible to stop it. We'll probably find out eventually, but given how difficult it's been to get accurate information about the ongoing search, there is very little we can safely assume at this point.
