Post NCsu game thread

Ahh, what a view!

It's telling that his HS teammate doesn't seem to be having the same issues. He's a beat or 3 late on a lot of his throws and isn't taking open sure completions. His completion percentage is consistently too low now. He's got the arm so hopefully that game winning drive settles him down. That pick in the 4th was a horrendous set of decisions. Why he didn't throw it to his first read is a mystery to me, but after he double clutched that throwing the ball cross body into traffic to a receiver who isn't looking was obviously a mistake.
My take is why wasn't he looking? He's a veteran and needs to help his frosh QB.. We probaby should've been pounding it in on the ground in hindsight..

Whoever said this in game thread was my feelings exactly. NCST is as stupid as the U

Glad the NCST running back didn’t slide on his long TD run with about a minute left.
wow, that didn't cross my mind, but you are spot on - probably lose 24-23..

First, Philo has to start and take every snap next Friday in Athens. Playing King - when it is obvious he can't and we won't throw - against that defense will get us killed offensively.
A lot of good and a lot to be concerned about after last night.
Second, a team does take its cue from its coaches. And the coaches didn't panic after NC State scored late.

The good:
Birr hit three field goals. Let's get that one out of the way.
D picked off three passes. Hadn't picked off three all year and did that in one game.
Philo threw some great passes in the second half and made some courageous runs.

The bad and the ugly:
N.C. State took our top notch run D and kicked its teeth in. Watching the first half, I thought, they could just run it on us and get 5-6 yards at least every play. Glad they're not running it more. Then they started running it more and we almost blew it.
N.C. State squashed our run game all night long, especially when King was in there. There was a time when we could get away with "we're running it every play, try to stop us" but not last night. And not next week, either.
Philo was off target a bunch in the first half. And yeah, Boyd, shoulda/coulda made that catch in the end zone, but why are we sending a 240-pound tight end on that kind of route? If that's Singleton or Rutherford, that probably is six.

And we got a little lucky:
But not a whole lot though. A little lucky in that even after the injury timeout, when it was clear that it was Philo's scrambling that was keeping that last drive going, N.C. State still just rushed three. Maybe our staff said, if they're gonna rush three, we'll run a bunch of takeoff routes and open the field for Aaron to run.
A little surprised that State didn't try to throw a quick out with 6 seconds left to try to get a little closer. Because that kick looked like one of my 5 irons - starting 10 feet left and working its way back to the pin with just enough fade.

Like the man said, winning is hard.
(insert your mom joke here. insert your mom and insert joke here)
But we got 7 wins out of a season from which a lot of folks picked us to get no more than 5. So we got a chance for 9.
Go UMass. I hate UMass (they cost me some money many years ago) but Saturday, I will be a big Minutemen fan. It won't be no picnic, but I hope they go double nickels on Georgia.

Late to this, any word on Malik? I’m assuming he’s done for the year based on his reaction and my view from the stands. Really sucks to see him go down.

Reality is, the schedule at the beginning of the year was 7-5, 6-6. Injuries and bad breaks, GT still managed that. GT won a game they could have lost (NCSU) and lost a game they could have won (VT). There were no “WTH” type games against lower opponent this year. The D overall showed vast improvement throughout the year.

I think the staff has known since the beginning that King wasn't going to get back to full-time duty this season. They thought Pyron could/would step in, but when that didn't go as planned they came up with this brilliant idea to platoon King and Philo. It has given Philo an opportunity to ease into the starting role while giving opponents fits trying to figure out who to plan for and who is going to run each play. They have been expanding the playbook for Philo each game and utilizing King less. Philo showed last night he is enough of a running threat that you can't just assume the play calls with him in the game. I could see Philo starting against UGAg at this point.

In the Captain Obvious department, we no longer have the ability to force defenses to keep a QB spy since Philo doesn't present as much of a threat to run (like King did).

It was pretty clear NCSU did a fantastic job of scouting our tendencies. They picked up our blitzes and seemed to know where all of our running plays were going. We are damn lucky to have won that game.

And I agree with the idea that we need to call it a day on King. Dude is a warrior but he might as well have his arm in a sling when he's in the game. I'm not thrilled to just have Philo as the QB next week - he looks like the best passer we've had since Hamilton if not Mike Kelley. Guess you gotta grow up sometime.

The coaching and clock management on both sides was atrocious. All NC State had to do was go down inside the 5 on their long run, kick a 20 yard FG, and celebrate.
I've never agreed with that line of thinking. That's fine if there are 20 seconds left and all you have left to do is snap for a field goal.
But with that much time on the clock, you bring a whole lot else into play. Scoring is never guaranteed. You could bobble a snap.
Or you could try for an extra yard when all you need to do is take a knee and get the ball ripped out.
And on the other side, we still had to go 75 yards with less than two minutes and only one timeout. Like the man said, make a stop.

None of them have finished the season yet.. don't yell at me it's @USCJacket rating system
You obviously have a hard time understanding reality. So I’ll clarify again.

2023: Colorado won 4 games vs teams who did not finish with a winning record.
2024: Colorado has beaten the following with a chance at 7+ wins:
Colorado State - 7-3
Baylor - 6-4
Texas Tech - 6-4

Now they have 4-6 Kansas and 3-7 Oklahoma State left.

Wow. What a hard schedule. Lol

Flip side, GT has beaten Duke, Miami, UNC who are all guarantees to win 7+ games.

Did you see the game winning drive?

Some people didn’t watch Duke-SMU.

I did and I thought about that. Guess I'm not completely sold on the idea yet. Philo is not a natural runner and doesn't appear to be all that fast. King runs like a wide receiver and he's fast and knows how to cut.

Another thing to consider is that a big part of a QB running is knowing how to protect the football. If he didn't run all that much in HS, I would be a bit concerned about opponents focusing on stripping the ball. Ball security takes time to learn. I'm sure he's getting a crash course but...

I will go ahead and blame the refs for some of those runs as well as them being scramble drills. They were holding on the edges all night and we don’t have the horses to overcome that. I think the Run D was more than adequate for the majority of the game and the offense left them on the field a little longer than we are used to.

A few times we also filled the wrong holes. So there are some improvement oppportunities in the execution department for sure. We had some good play calls and poor execution combined with very loosely called game on the lines.

As for King vs Philo and not being able to run King out for some option heavy looks, I call bullshit. We can and do run effectively with King and he has thrown the ball. While he shouldn’t be in the game as a starter there is nothing wrong with occasionally running the ball when there is a strong belief you’re going to run the ball. We did it for 10 years.

Glad the NCST running back didn’t slide on his long TD run with about a minute left.

Deciding to take points and the lead when you are losing a game is not nearly as stupid as deciding not to kneel when you are winning and can run out the clock. It's not even in the same solar system.

You can obviously make an argument that sliding down would have been a better decision, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to take the lead and force us to go the length of the field in two minutes. Especially not when the wind was gusting like it was.

We must have watched different games. They ran it 11 time for 55 yards in the 1st half. One was the 16yd TD on a QB scramble, and another was a 15yd run by their RB where Zeek missed a tackle in the backfield. Their QB was their leading rusher with 83 yards and zero of those were designed runs. They weren't exactly gashing us with their run game.
