I put this together to say "lol Tennessee should have never fired Fulmer as coach" but it doesn't look like the program was in decline at the end of his time.

The black box is when Fulmer was the head coach. I used a 5 year moving average to try to tease out total impact of recruiting.

Really, Butch Jones led the best two years at UT since the Fulmer era. I suspect that Gus Malzahn is the easy choice here, hell they already hired his DC for him. If Gus is not interested, maybe Hugh Freeze or Tom Herman.

The NCAA won’t touch UGA. Georgia, Bama, Clemson and OSU operate on a completely different set of rules than the rest of CFB.

A little lost in all this is that they are officially firing him for cause. Presumably that means they think they have enough evidence to nail him for recruiting violations. And the rumors floating around is that Mims is one of the guys involved. The same Mims that ended up at uga and (again presumably) sparked the “uga could be next” tweet from a few weeks ago.

Just curious, do you think that Phil Fulmer has been helpful or harmful in his tenure as AD? I really have no idea, but it does seem that he hasn't gotten it right as football HC's go. Could be, they got the "next" hire late in the game or didn't plan on "X, Y, or Z" happening. Any insight would be appreciated.

Fulmer hasn't been respected here for awhile. Some say he was responsible for getting Majors out. Fulmer was going regardless, but this just made it easier to show them both the door.
