QB battle

JG admitted in the VT press conference that he didn't practice as hard that week as other weeks (Seriously WTF). If you recall we got the doors blown off and didn't score any points. Doesn't sound like a guy that would improve in the offseason.

That being said, it's possible that he may start and not because he's the best, but because he has experience.

Well, we are talking about NFL caliber QB, so it is a relative scale. But part of Brady low draft status was due to arm strength.

A quick release is huge. Marino’s quick release was unreal.

Agreed. It's a very very relative scale. All those guys have insane athletic ability compared to the average human, but for many their athleticism doesn't stand out from the other 50 guys in their tier, and they are separated in different ways. Brady definitely changed his dedication to the game and needed to have time to make the leap. There aren't many guys who have the opportunity to stick around and develop before being handed the keys. I would say that, yeah, he has a quick release, but that isn't necessarily special. Combining that with reading things very quickly and being prepared to get the ball out of his hands quickly is special. He doesn't have the tools to extend plays. If he didn't get the ball out fast and have great accuracy and ability to read the defense, he'd have no chance in the league.

It’s balance, but I think in football, quick decision making is the more dominant attribute. Rodgers and Brady haven’t ever been big arms by nfl standards.
To his point, the difference between Chad Pennington and Trent Dilfer and Tom Brady is largely arm strength.

The quotes we've been hearing are that we have a guy and the plan is to stick with that guy and not play anybody else unless he really blows it. That doesn't sound like we're sticking with the incumbent because we're still waiting for someone to beat him out. That sounds like somebody separated themselves. Maybe it's Graham, but it's really looking more and more like Sims if you RBTL on some quotes.

Collins showed last year it is about long term success. If Sims has a decent grasp of the offense and looks like he could take us to the next level in years 2, 3, 4 - he will start this season.

Our QB’s looked good in the second half when our opponents put their second and third string players in since we were blown out in the first half of so many games.
None of our losses were close, except for The Citadel.
The true test of what our QB’s abilities are seen in the first half of our games last season.

what about the 3/4 of them that didn't play in any first halves last season?

If they were eligible then they weren’t even good enough to beat out those who played so poorly.
We just don’t have a QB yet.
Well 2/4 of them were in high school at that time, so I would say they weren't eligible yet.

Given the NCAA eligibility rule this year, this is basically a "live ammunition" freebie redshirt year for Sims if he starts. Makes sense to get a full year of real competition under his belt and then have 4 full years of play after this one.
