QB battle

If it’s JG, I will be a little disappointed that hand-picked 4* players can’t beat out a guy that was recruited to run the ball (and not recruited to be under center at all by anyone else).

Neither was Deshaun Watson. Kelly Bryant and Cole Stoudt were nothing more than average players, and even they weren't unseated preseason by generational talents.

I think it would be awesome if a true freshman wins the job outright, but that's a lot to expect, IMO.

Bryant and Stoudt were solid QBs who knew and were recruited to the system. Depending on how similar our O is to Sims HS system, he might have a leg up. Because Graham didn’t really get a lot of good passing looks last year.

So you don’t think a QBs arm is the single most important factor? Really?

A big arm and a so-so ability to read coverage can make an nfl caliber QB. See Matt Stafford

A mediocre arm and an above average ability to read coverage can make an nfl caliber QB. See Brady

extreme athleticism can make an nfl caliber QB. See Vick and others

but you’ve got to have a lot of at least one of those things to make it.

Agreed. Any of those things can make for a good QB, with some fitting a system better than others.

No different than golf... All of the best golfers are long off the tee. However, length with no creativity, shot making, or feel around the greens doesn't win tournaments. It especially doesn't win majors.

A big arm is essentially a requirement to be among the best QBs, but it's hardly the only quality that's important. There are plenty of shorter hitters that can make a living playing golf by getting the ball in the hole effectively. They hardly win anything of relevance.

If Graham is the starter, that means he beat out a 4* Elite 11 QB, another highly touted recruit that CDP hand picked for this offense, and a good returning player with a little seat time and good knowledge of the offense. If Graham is the starter, it means he's worked his tail off and on the field results prove it. Don't just go throwing him under the bus.

All that said, I think it's Gleason or Sims.
You’re absolutely right.. I hope one of the other guys in the room won the job this year. Considering the struggles at the QB position last year, if they didn’t, we may be in trouble.

It’s balance, but I think in football, quick decision making is the more dominant attribute. Rodgers and Brady haven’t ever been big arms by nfl standards.

I think the point GoGATech was trying to make is that if Graham is the starter it means he has made great strides in the offseason.

Honestly I think Graham will be significantly better this year. Whether or not he receives playing time is another question.

I watched last year's UVA game again last week and Graham was 10/12 in the first half but under game pressure in the second half he overthrew nearly every single third down possession pass. He has to be much better this year or one of the others should start.

I wouldn't call Brady's arm mediocre. He can really spin it and is very accurate.

I think one factor all of these QBs have in common, though, is a quick release. Once you make the read, the ball has to get out of your hands fast. This is a very underrated part of elite quarterbacking. Some QBs are impossible to sack due to their release.

JMO

ability to read coverage > accuracy > athleticism > pocket presence > arm strength

Obviously there is a minimum needed in each area, but I think arm strength is vastly overrated at the college level. There have been plenty of Heisman QBs with mediocre (or worse) arm strength because they excelled at at least 2 of the above.

Well, we are talking about NFL caliber QB, so it is a relative scale. But part of Brady low draft status was due to arm strength.

A quick release is huge. Marino’s quick release was unreal.

Sims high school film looks a lot like Joshua Nesbitt, imo. To the point above, his release doesn't look terribly quick as he drops the ball down and kinda winds up. However, it is also a bit deceptive because there's just a lot of motion. I have no doubt they are working to calm that down and keep his hands higher throughout.
Sims was fantastic at the Elite 11, though, up against Harrison Bailey and many other top QB prospects. This is at his first throw (2:15) but you'll get a kick out of the whole video because they are making Tua's 2nd & 26 throw, the rail shot. :)
