Reasons for Randy Edsall...

I'm still leaning towards either Hatcher or Edsall --in that order. There is not a whole lot that I could add to JTS' post in support of Hatcher. It is a risk because he has yet to be an OC at the Div. 1 level --but with what he's done thus far in his coaching career it's a risk that I don't mind taking. Edsall would be less of a risk in terms of D-1 experience --and I really would not mind if he became our next HC-- but I'm just excited by the possibilities of Hatcher.

I know that I personally do not want to hire Rick Neuheisal --but with that being said if he becomes DRad's man than he will have my full support. Yesterday I had a little more support for Tenuta than I do this morning --one reason is that I just have a feeling he is not DRad's guy.

I'm a fan --DRad is our AD --I'll support the mans decision.

Please no Edsall---Gaileyesque record with schedules peppered liberally with very weak teams such as Army, Navy, Rhode Island, Syracuse, Duke, Maine, Temple, Akron, etc.

1999 4-7
2000 3-8
2001 2-9
2002 6-6
2003 9-3
2004 8-4
2005 5-6
2006 4-8
2007 9-3

Wow. Lee, your post above is a very good post.

He has an undeniably distinct "rock-star" aura about him and is just an exceptional recruiter, albeit not as local feeder HS oriented as he could be.

In summary, a Neuheisel hire might not be the safest pick, but it certainly has the potential of being the most spectacularly successful, and some excitement on the flats wouldn't be a bad thing at all these days!

I think Randy would be a great coach at GT. He is getting a big boost from some former alumni and SA's.
Tell me what is dynamic about Edsall and his teams? He is a solid head coach and would be a step up from Gailey in terms of Discipline, which would probably show on the field. But, it wont put seats in the stands if the Offense isnt dynamic as both Clough and Drad mentioned we need. I looked at him and his staff and at this stage in GT football history its not the right hire- 6 years ago yes, not now.

Randy is a former QB and can develop a player at that position well. That has been our huge deficit during the Gailey era. I'll post a bio on Randy soon. Randy did a great job with Kyle Orlovsky and I like the idea that Randy has been exposed to recruiting the NE AND SE part of the country. After all, that's where we play.

I for one value 56's input . . .

. . . here is a guy that has actual been there in the trenches and spilt blood, sweat and I am sure on occassion some tears. The majority of the posters on these boards have no direct knowledge of any of the candidates other than some opinion based on who they think best suits there view of what a Head Coach should be like.

I am no different in that regard. I feel pretty sure about the following:

1) Edsell knows more about Georgia Tech than any other candidate having been the only one to have actual spent time here.
2) He had the most exciting defense I ever saw for Georgia Tech in the one year he was here. I think we scored something like 10 TD's on Defense that year.
3) He has recent experience and demonstrated success building a fairly strong program from the ground up at a Basketball school.
4) We need to promote Giff to DC and keep him. Tenuta is too tied to Gailey. He has lost 6 in a row to Georgia just like Chan has. Time for a change.
5) RN has too much baggage and will not past muster with the old guard or the administration.
6) WM is a Dawg and if you are a true Tech man you know that no Dawg's are allowed.
7) Hatcher would be my fall back if we can not get RE.

Those are my thoughts. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

Go Jackets!

This is EXACTLY how I feel about Edsall. QFT

If Edsall wins, the fanbase will be excited. I honestly find that to be a stupid criteria when looking for a new headcoach. Hire the guy that will help you win, period.

Sounds eeriely similar to Bill Lewis.... he only had one winning season at ECU.
I think the same thing. First off other then WV the Big East is a total joke. We took the only other decent teams they had when Miami,VT, and BC joined the ACC. The Big East is now just a glorified version of conference USA.

To me Muschamp and Hatcher are our best options.

Edsall BUILT UConn from the ground up as they transitioned from D-1AA to D-1A.

Yes, if any coach wins, they will create excitement. But we are looking for excitement NOW, not at the end of next season. Edsall will not excite people now. Won't be a bad hire by any means, but it will not generate the excitement about the program right now that some of the other names would, especially Hatcher in my opinion...

Is Edsall going to get you to try and move into better seats next year? Is Edsall going to get some of those people we lost under Gailey to come back? Is Edsall going to cause more season ticket sales this next season than the others?

Ish you sound like an engineer, not a marketing guy. I contend a coach who has a similar win loss record to Gailey; but averages 35 points a game would be a big improvement at GT. TV and the general public tend to enjoy your product more if you lose 38-35 rather than 10-7. People tend to overlook that O'leary couldn't beat FSU because he at least ran up the scoreboard for example. Now if you can score a lot of points and win that's even more better.

Take a lesson from the juiced up players and balls in the Major Leagues, or the absence of defense in the NBA, the average walk up fan wants to see scoring; it is almost as important as winning these days and shouldn't be ignored.

I guess what I should have said was there's no point in hiring a coach just because he excites the fanbase and pumps up the players but is a horrible coach. Basically, don't hire Orgeron.

recruiting one year at GT and being the se recruiter for boston college still doesn't tell me he has the relationships with high schools and coaches that he needs. This is the ONLY flaw I see to hiring Edsall.
2 things: Keep Giff, upgrade him to Co or Asst Defensive Co (like Saban does- Saban still runs the D, Edsall could still run the D- Tenuta is gone if we hire Edsall.

But I am not sold at all on OC and style of O- wouldnt put anymore seats and anymore exciting unless there is something Im missing.

Disagree. There is a huge way to excite the fanbase now - recruiting. All y'all are fretting that we will lose recruits. If a coach comes in, secures those that jumped back on the fence, and then goes out and locks down linemen in January to move the class toward the Top 10, everyone will be excited immediately. If he starts a buzz amongst the recruits that they are excited by the new coach, the fans will follow.
