Spring transfer portal watch

This is true, however you really cannot blame a player if UGA offers. Right now, UGA is the Playboy centerfold asking you to be their boyfriend. Sometimes you later find out you need a girl that can cook and milk a cow.

I also don't like that analogy. But there's some truth there.

In this case, I find myself having to remind myself that he was a 17-18 year-old kid, and that he was having to make adult decisions at that time. Which makes it a little easier to stomach that a) his dad was a GT grad, and b) he said things like this when he originally committed:

The decision to commit to Georgia Tech was one that his family loves. “Especially my dad since he went to Georgia Tech. He is happy for me."

Scroggs will not be entertaining any more offers even if they come from any of the blue bloods. ""I'll tell them I am all set and going to Georgia Tech. I am happy with my decision. Recruits are committing and they all had chances."

Several of the schools recruiting Griffin have already received text messages letting them know he was committing to Georgia Tech. “I told them thank you for recruiting me and showing the interest in me that you did."

...then a little over a month later jumped straight to uGA as soon as they came knocking.

To be fair, though, dude has 2 national championship rings to show for it. Which as much as I hate it, is a far cry from playing from our former coach for 2 years.

We are going to bring in 6-8 additional players from the portal.
We'll have to lose 6-8 more guys then because we are sitting dead on 85 now if my count is correct. I expect about 3-4 more and fill those spots with transfers. I can't think of 6-8 guys I'm ok with losing unless they are replaced by immediate upgrades at the same position.

Are there still any Covid scholarships? I thought the 85 had been bumped up a few.

My understanding is that the limit only increased for that year directly after Covid where seniors didn't count against the total. Everybody that was on a roster somewhere during 2020 still gets the extra Covid year if they wish to take it, but the scholarship limit is back to 85 for each school, that is why it has been hard for some teams to get their numbers worked out each year and why many have been having to take smaller HS signing classes each year.

Wouldn't that extra year have to roll forward for 4 years? Freshmen get an extra year too, without a RS.

Yes they get the extra year, but the team cap is still 85 and they get counted. That's what the problem is. Anybody that was a Senior in 2020 and decided to come back and play in 2021 didn't count against the 85 so it was fine for that first year, but that's the only year they did it that way. What they should do is make it where anybody that uses their "extra Covid year" doesn't count against the roster, but that would be too simple.

Have you looked at our roster? How many WR’s and DB’s does a team need? We should be carrying way more linemen than we do and way less WR, RB, and DB’s than we do. I‘ve never seen one post or one article about GT being hamstrung by too few WR’s, but it seems like every year by game 3 we are discussing our lack of linemen on both sides. I could give you a list of 10 players right now that if I could I would turn into linemen.

So basically it is saying you can't bring any freshmen in unless you have players leave.

If you had 85 on scholarship Covid year, every single player of the 85 gets another season, every Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior. So, you have said you are freezing that 85. If you don't bump up scholarships for 4 seasons, you have to recruit fewer players from HS since you are frozen at 85.

You sure the NCAA didn't bump it up?

Yes, we are still working with an 85 scholarship cap. The only year teams were allowed over 85 was in 2021 when any Seniors from 2020 decided to stay and play another year. Those guys basically just did not count against the roster. It makes no sense why they only did that for one year because you have 4 classes worth of kids that get the extra year if they want it.

Have you checked other teams rosters? Our WR and DB room are on par with everybody else. We have the same amount of scholarship OL as UGA and Bama. The lack of linemen doesn't mean we don't have bodies in the room, we have just lacked quality depth and experience there. Our roster isn't bad in terms of position breakdown, we just need more talent in some places, and that's why I say whatever transfers we take need to be upgrades at positions of guys leaving.

I like our safeties. Brooks and Powell-Lee were easily our best DBs, especially given how young they were and still are. Jaylon King coming back from injury should really help too. We ought to be solid at safety.
Other than that .... there's a lot of unproven at wide receiver. Our CBs didn't exactly put up eye popping numbers in INTs or PBUs last year, either. Sims had 1 INT. Zamari had 1. That's it. And opposing offenses averaged 30 pass attempts per game against us.
We have exactly 23 receptions coming back from last year's team at WR. All by Malik Rutherford.
Leary has caught all of three passes in his career. He's been mostly a special teamer. Lane caught, what, 37, 38 passes in three years combined at A&M?
There's potential. But there is a lot of unknown too.

We're talking about numbers. He was saying we have way too many WR's and DB's on scholarship.

Are you seriously comparing GT to UGA and Bama? Those teams can have those numbers because the linemen they bring in hit at a much higher rate than the leftovers we get. UGA can get 4 and 5 stars linemen and have 5 out of 8 hit. We get 3 stars which means we may get 2 out of 8 to be decent. Using the strategy of “Bama and UGA have the same numbers” has gotten us to the worse lines we’ve had in decades at GT. We are wasting scholarships by having the “same numbers” at RB, WR, and DB when most of those guys will NEVER see the field in a game. Linemen is where we need the numbers until we can start signing 4 and 5 stars.

By game 3 we’ll be seeing the same threads about lack of quality depth along the lines and how we are having to shuffle bodies around all while our fourteen 5’9“ WR’s are waving towels on the bench. Las5 year we had 4 RB’s touch the ball with Hall and Smith getting the vast majority. And we all know we will play at most 4 RB’s again this season yet we have many more scholarship RB’s who will be be towel wavers then portal out like Martin did. Sure, Bama and UGA only need those the numbers of linemen to get 5-8 good ones. We need double their numbers to get 5-8 decent ones.
