Stansbury - Brown Field Is Embarrassment

The idea was to put in an artificial surface so that BDS could host more outside events to increase rental revenue. COVID kinda screwed that up. I really don't care about the surface and if we can host an additional 6-8 events a year there to raise some money it is worth it.

The AA isn't in a position where they can just toss money around on a bunch of vanity "but I like this better" projects.
Agree with all this but it seems we put in the ugliest turf possible. I just wish it looked better, because it looks like dead grass.

The coconut stuff is supposed to be cooler. That wasn't the point. Tell the Coconut company selling it to either color it green or black or they don't get the contract. It's the appearance that is pitiful.
It ain't the coconut that makes it look ööööty. Almost everyone uses it because it is cooler. Its the color of the grass they chose.

The field never looked worse than the last year of grass when we lost our grass guy to Bama. What level of incompetence can't replace a grounds guy?

An elite "grounds guy" typically has more than one degree in agronomy + related field(s), and the competition to recruit the best-of-the-best is pretty fierce, whether you're a sports program, a country club, or a seed or machinery manufacturer/distributor.

Edit: Not defending TS or the turf decision - I MUCH prefer natural grass on Grant Field, not even a question.

I don't doubt or disagree with any of this. Obviously every position requires some expertise. But in the final year it appeared we replaced him the kid down the street to mow the lawn. That was a crime. Kind of hallmark for the Stansbury era when something was difficult. Gold looks green? öööö it, make it blue. Grass looks like öööö? öööö it, make it turf. Football team sucks with a ööööty contract? öööö it, replace a few assistant coaches.

So we've gone from one of the best looking grass surfaces in all of college football to one of the worst looking non-grass surfaces in all of college football ....
OK.

Maybe if we can find a way to show the current field contributes to climate change, we can get some fed bucks to rip that öööö out.

You're 100% right about that. It's representative in most things that Tech does, but frankly its representative of how most Tech fans think as well. Just look at this board's suggestions on any number of things. The default setting is to fix something by doing something cheaper to save more money. Salaryman mentality.

Except for offices. Stansbury really wanted to have a nice office and fundraised his ass off for a new one of those.

I’m curious as to whether the field dropped off because we no longer knew how to take care of it, or whether we just said “screw it, we’re ripping it up after the season anyway.” Was there a similar drop off for the baseball and softball fields?

They said one of the primary reasons they did it was so that they could host concerts and such. It had nothing to do with being unable to maintain the field properly.

Absolutely it did. The final few games on it looked like a playground field. It was embarrassing and purposeful

I know that it looked bad, I’m trying to understand if we let it look bad on purpose or if we didn’t know how to take care of it (as recent posts have asserted).

Only thing I will say is it isn’t an embarrassment. Rational people don’t get embarrassed by not having a grass field. Are you a member of the Turf Growers of America and are the other members making fun of you in the group chat?

It’s kind of embarrassing since it’s a representation of our program that appears on TV every week. It’s a weird color, we’ve kind of said “screw it” when it comes to painting it, it looks dirty and uneven with the coconut stuff in it (the brown clouds players kick up look ridiculous), and the turf monster is in full effect.

It’s embarrassing to some people in the same way that having a weedy, patchy front yard is embarrassing - it reflects poorly on you publicly.

I could see Key somehow making this a priority if he gets the FT job. In his first home game, the "ATL" logo mysteriously disappeared (along with the aesthetically similar DT8 logo).

I see a no-nonsense, traditionalist approach in our future. Remember, O'Leary's first full season in 1995 brought the return of natural grass to Grant Field.

Your last paragraph brings up an interesting question. Do you cut your grass for the way it makes you feel to have a nice looking yard? Or do you cut your grass because you are worried what people will think about you if you have weeds.

And I’m telling you no one outside of a subset of GT fans care. You are being embarrassed by something that no one else notices or cares about.

I’m not saying you can’t prefer grass. It is the amount you care that is strange.
