Stansbury - Brown Field Is Embarrassment

I’m curious as to whether the field dropped off because we no longer knew how to take care of it, or whether we just said “screw it, we’re ripping it up after the season anyway.” Was there a similar drop off for the baseball and softball fields?

I thought the baseball field looked good when I saw it this spring. Have not seen the softball field by on highlights I’ve never noticed it looking shabby.

Question I have is why did we go to turf knowing we habitually had a thin roster and turf causes more injuries? Seems not smart, something an Engineer acting outside his area of expertise would do because he thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room……. about everything.

I know that it looked bad, I’m trying to understand if we let it look bad on purpose or if we didn’t know how to take care of it (as recent posts have asserted).

I said at the time it was on purpose. We hadn't announced artificial yet, but I told dad we did that öööö on purpose. I thought it would be FieldTurf though, still hate it.

The problem with husks is they decompose. If there is enough of it and the conditions are right, probably gets slippery too. Also, I bet sleep get issues with weeds wanting to take root in that rotten crap.

And I cannot believe that some opposing fan hasn't pranked a team with artificial turf. Bring in my boom sprayer full of Wesson oil the night before.....

Wouldn't that effect both teams? Jeez, you're even losing it over here.

Your last paragraph brings up an interesting question. Do you cut your grass for the way it makes you feel to have a nice looking yard? Or do you cut your grass because you are worried what people will think about you if you have weeds.

Both, I guess. I like the satisfaction of a job well done, but I also like that it demonstrates pride of ownership and competence. (And I don’t want the HOA getting after me.)

I think the turf field bugs people because it took what was a point of pride (a beautiful, award winning field) and turned it into something less than that. It’s also emblematic of a dark period in Tech football in general. Maybe it’s something that nobody else notices or cares about, but it’s just a little something you can feel good about as a fan, like having the best bowl record or longest bowl streak or not being shut out at home for 60 years or having the oldest/winningest home stadium…

The bigger issue with me is why do WE seem to be the only team that slips on OUR turf? Duke was the first team that I saw have some trouble. But we are slipping almost every game. Can WE not get the proper cleats for OUR own field? How hard is that? One would think we could have used this to our advantage, but it seems the opposite has happened.

I can't tell you if what you think is right or wrong (well I can but it will hurt your feelers), but I know that no matter what is going on you guys will find a way to bitch about it.

In any case, while watching the game Saturday I was thinking that the brown mulch made it look like dirt was coming up through the grass as it was being played on. Coincidentally this also occurs on a real grass field.

So we should have the dirt under the grass we intend to plant colored green, but not under the white lines that dirt needs to be white. Don't forget to color the dirt under the logos and endzone gold.

If the players aren't complaining about the surface, we have much more important areas to spend money on right now.

SMH.

Is the concert argument valid? There are numerous indoor and outdoor venues for concerts in the Atlanta area. MBS and Truist opened just before we made the switch. There are a limited number of concert events that require the capacity provided by Grant Field.

Only thing I will say is it isn’t an embarrassment. Rational people don’t get embarrassed by not having a grass field. Are you a member of the Turf Growers of America and are the other members making fun of you in the group chat?
I'm quite rational. Rational enough to see a once proud facility turned into a second rate piece just because some nit wit can't get the color right. When high school fields look better something is amiss.

If they tear it out, I will personally drive down once a week, if needed, with the Cub Cadet and mow the grass with the only pay being my four ST's in the cheap seats and 4 hot dogs and 4 Cokes per game.

I really don't know how Tech can't take this deal.
If you were a gazillionaire you’d do it for free

I think there was merit to the events and concert angle. Soccer games, etc. There were two big concerts lined up (BTS and GnR) before the pandemic sidelined them.

Seems like bad timing. Right now live entertainment is dealing with a one-two punch of a ööööty economy, and less demand after people realized during the pandemic that FOMO on live events isn't so important. Even arena shows are downsizing.

So if we don't book any concerts over the next two years, then we can say the concert/event market isn't a compelling reason to keep the artificial turf. We could look to move back to grass. Sounds good to me.

Remember CPJ saying he had never experienced anything like Tulane's artificial turf. We opened that stadium for them. CPJ said that players were complaining about their feet burning.
yep, a friend was there inNaw-leans and almost died in the heat. he said. The field had to be brutal.
