Tech Opens A 14 Pt Underdog To Ole Miss…

I have seen plenty of times where our D has struggled to keep up. To add, poor angles, haven't helped either. Now, I will say this. Everyone is focused on the "big hit". I think that is 100% accredited to the NFL and ESPN. The simple wrap up type tackle is what is shown on TV. But, this is an issue, that happens, with all of college football. My observation comes from seeing us whiff on tackles, due to lack of speed or perhaps bad angles... Either way, it causes losses to turn into gains.
I think poor angles is the biggest culprit. We missed at least 4 sacks Saturday due to taking inside angles on the QB and allowing him to spin out and gain positive yardage. I haven't really noticed us getting straight up beaten by speed though.

I think the 5 win mark depends more on the schedule than on us. WCU was a given. Ole Miss and UCF were unknowns. UCF already lost at home to a bad Louisville. Ole Miss from last year would have beaten Troy soundly.

Then there is the ACC. Clemson looks no better than last year’s team. FSU looks better. No one in the coastal looks improved other than Miami. UVa at VT look significantly worse.

The five win threshold this year would be selling our program and players short.
I agree. MY line is 6 wins. I was just pointing out that 6 wins is definitely not "too little, too late" for Collins to be retained.

Nope. 6 wins this season and we go bowling - Collins will be back next year. The big donors said so themselves. One even said 5 wins would buy Collins another year.
Donors always leave their options open. If he stays it means they don’t like the viable replacement options enough to offer buy out money, nothing more. Donors aren’t committed to anything.

That’s all well and good, but the fact remains, a bowl appearance saves Collins’s job.

Would be huge if Gef can get a win this weekend in order to win back-to-back games for the first time in 4 years

Since Stansbury has never issued specific parameters for the spineless, clueless Clown to keep his job, saying it's a fact is a bit much.

Calling Collins a clown when you have been deemed to be a clown yourself is a bit much.

I don't know if that would be a guarantee. If we get there with close wins over teams with losing records and get blown out by the rest it would be a tough sell when people had been talking about 7-8 needed too.

This is the dilemma. This isn’t just not firing CGC. This is about extending CGC. Maybe he can recruit with a three year contract and still a very hot seat. It would be a pretty difficult sell though. If he gets to 7 wins like you describe (maybe 6 wins and a bowl win), are we going to tack another year onto his contract? Only a fool would increase the buyout. So it would have to be a pretty terrible contract. And would we take a risk on a recruiting hit by not giving a fourth year? Or would it be better to try and jolt the fanbase with a new coach?

I think CGC has to win AND look good doing it. Narrow wins and blowout losses aren’t going to sell season tickets.

The last is basically what I meant. Barely crossing a 6-6 threshold is shaky grounds for retaining him at this point. Even if Stansbury and some boosters could talk themselves into that being ok, as you said I'd worry enough about fan moral and attendance to wonder what the odds are we drop down a buyout years' worth in revenue for next year.

I would hope that the bar to give him an extension is insanely high, I'd almost think 9 wins at least. If we think that no matter the season we would have to extend him if we don't fire him, then it's not really a choice. I would say he has to prove any success this year isn't a fluke to get more time.

He has set the bar so low over the past three years, that any kind of bowl appearance will buy CGC at least another year.

You didn't fire him for any (or all) of the 3 win seasons, you didn't fire him for losing to The Citadel or Southern Illinois at home, you didn't fire him for losing to South Carolina Cow College 73-7 at home when they punked him with their PUNTER at QB (!), you didn't fire him for 100-0 . . . you didn't fire him despite ALL of that. So how are you going to fire him for getting to a bowl game??? Not going to happen.

Because we couldn’t afford to fire him after last season. Johnson won 7 and went to a bowl game his final season and it didn’t change the calculus. Collins was brought in to bring in better athletes and install a system that could make us more competitive. That means more than 6 or 7 wins and minor bowl games. Collins did nothing to temper expectations that we’d emerge competing at a higher level. The year round rebranding campaign reinforced those expectations. Telling people to lower their sights now is never going to sell. And 6 or 7 wins in year four is lowering sights. Collins seems like a likable guy, but he knew what he was signing up to do. Doesn’t matter who he recruits if they’re getting destroyed in the games that matter.

I have a friend that works in Vegas. The word is, people are taking the under. So, there are those that think GT will give Ole Miss a close game. We'll see how correct these folks are.

looks like the total is currently at 63-64 with a 60 open, Looks like it touched 65 so maybe thats where the under money started coming in. Been 3-4 point movement in both spread and total since open.

Well, the line started at 14 and has gone to 16 which tells me, not many folks wanted Tech at ONLY 14. We've not beat the line yet and probably won't this week. Sad, just sad.

For three quarter the offense did just that against Clemson. The two blocked punts and the play where Clemson’s QB pulled a horseshoe out of his tail when he lateral the ball while getting sacked on 3rd and long was too much to overcome. I’m assuming Ole Miss’s D is not as good as Clemson so if our O can produce like it did against Clemson and close the deal with some scores, we’ll have a ball game on our hands. But …. GT hasn’t showed the bookies and the betting public they can put it together thus the 16 point spread.

Old piss has a better offense than clemson

I can hear him now. “The Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl is one of the elite Bowl Games in college football. The deep tradition of this game goes back over a decade…”
