The ACC Coastal Coach Purge Begins! - Fuentes Out at VT

I like it. I realize Choice has no head coaching experience; but at this point what damage could he do even if he is in over his head. Maybe hire O'leary as a consultant/mentor and give Choice a few years to figure it out like we did Curry in the early 80's. I like the idea even if it requires boosting Choice's salary over the $1m mark.

If TStan would go this radical, I would give him some grace to work it out too.

I also agree with this premise, though I think they may be a more optimal approach. We cannot afford to higher a , Sabanesque, CEO-type of head coach if he is going to be making Power 5 HC salary. So that leaves you with two options.

  1. Hire an emerging OC as HC who will also handle much of the OC duties, like CPJ. This will allow you to spend far less on OC, if you need one at all. I would look at OCs outside P5 who are doing something unique or innovative.
  2. Hire a HC with zero experience (Choice, Key, etc), or from d2 or d3, to be a CEO-type of HC. Would have to pay them far under P5 HC scale. Use $$ to pay for strong, emerging OC and DC talent.
My problem with #2 is that if this works, the OC and DC will be snapped up by another school with more prestige, and we will have to start over.

Gonna be hard to get any self respecting and accomplished coordinator to work under GC. Do you really think Tenuta is going to be down to play kickball at practice, air dunk with players, dance on the sideline when we are losing, and be reprimanded if he yells at players? That doesn’t fit JT’s brand at all
Tenuta could be the “bad cop” we so desperately need. No more inspirational speeches…just good dog-cussin’ and ridicule to offset all the coddles.

Three years ago, I would have said that Mullen was a slamdunk hire for any team. I would have taken him here. But man, those wheels fell off the bus down there in GVille.
I think Mullen is a good coach, but UF's expectations are too high compared to their situation. Gonna take a lot of movement for UF to get back to where they were in the late 2000s

Hey man, everyone deserves a 2nd chance....
Yeah...we could keep Choice and hire D Moore full time to offset any of our players doing things like, murder, rape and larceny.
It's a huge mountain to overcome, which is a shame because he can coach and build a program.
Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Yes. Let’s take a contained dumpster fire and set the entire building on fire.

Agreed but I will take that scenario because it would mean we had some success on the flats.
Ross, Friegen and O'Leary all said they wish they stayed at Tech. In the future they may be willing to give some advice. IDK. I am reaching.

Very encouraging news here. Great to know that TStan doesn't have to wait for end of season.
This is a fantastic offseason for head coach shopping.
Fuente wasn't even the leading ACC coach on the hotseat list!

In year 6, not 3. He leaves a lot less talent than he inherited. So, really not comparable to our situation at all.

I don't get the desire for Tenuta. Hasn't been a DC in a while and Collins is only going to hire someone who runs his type of scheme, anyway (4-2-5 Effort Based). And why would we want someone whose weakness was getting burned on the deep ball, which is what we are already worst at? Look forward, not backwards.

Defensive analyst? Sure.

Yeah - if offenses were the same as they were in 2005, Tenuta would make sense. But they aren't

His time as OC at UCF suggests that he is not a better OC than the poor job he is doing as a position coach.

Why would Godsey leave being a co-coordinator in the NFL for a college gig that isn't the head job?
Is Key's one season representative of what he is capable of?

Godsey will have to want to be a college head coach in the future. From our perspective he has multiple positives.
1) Understands Georgia Tech.
2) Has an offensive coordinator track record.
3) Provides a high level QB coach and talent evaluator.
4) Brings NFL credibility for recruiting.

I wasn't sure where Godsey was or what his job security is, etc. It was/is a longshot.
