The field looks terrible.

I hated the astro turf GT installed in the 70's, it seemed to me injuries increased with that stuff that
was hard as hell. I welcomed the return to the natural turf, and IMO thought that GT had one of
the best looking all-natural turfs in the Southeast and then some numb-skull decides to go back
to the artificial surface.

Some of the decisions made by our AD and the GTAA are just dumb!

And that the stated justification for making the change in the first place hasn't come to fruition even in the slightest and there's no reconciliation or accountability for that lack of follow thru.

I think we are saving a ton of money even without any events because a grass field is so much more expensive to maintain, especially one as good as ours was.

I always kind of felt the "we can hold events now" was just a BS reason that they gave because it sounds better than, "we can't afford to maintain our award winning field".

I don't have any explanation as to why it looks so bad though. It was very noticeable to me as well.

There's no way we've hit the ROI for how much it cost to put in.. it'd probably take 10 years

I'll admit I am not super knowledgeable on this subject, but I'm surprised to hear that it would take so long.

I thought it only cost around one million to put in, and that we spent way more than 100k a year to maintain the natural grass surface.

Lol you literally just did the math

It's especially more expensive to maintain when you literally spend zero dollars to maintain your POS artificial field, as it appears that Tech does.

If it cost one million to put in and we spent way more than 100k a year to maintain the natural field, then it would take a lot less than ten years to recoup our investment...I'm not sure I understand this comment.

Well it looks like we are spending $0 per year to maintain it.

From a financial standpoint, if we are short of funds spending a million $ up front to save 100K per year is questionable. Especially when it damages the image we project.

Yeah I agree. I was under the impression that we spent several hundred thousand per year to maintain the natural field. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Maybe someone on the board has a good idea of the actual cost.

These issues are analogous to deck chairs on the Titanic. It is hard to understand the logic in any of the decisions made concerning our athletic programs by the Hill or the AD over the last ten years.

We need a name sponsor for the field to raise some cash so we can afford to maintain it. Tons of possibilities. Should be worth millions, amirite?

In this same vein, I don't understand why Mark Emmert hasn't sold the naming rights for the portal. "The Linked-In NCAA Student-Athlete Transfer Portal" has a nice ring to it.

It's definitely not no cost to maintain an astroturf field, it's slighty less cost. You've got to keep from getting hard spots impacting drainage, there's the near contant painting to make it look green, you have to address the soft spots so your team doesn't start blowing ACLs, you have to clean it, you have to decompact it, etc.

Not to pull a wtf moment here, but we're Engineers and you'd think there would be a bit better and deeper understanding of what it takes to run and maintain a playing field. The biggest advantage is you don't need an extreme expert person to do grass maintenance to combat wear, extreme heat, extreme cold, etc.

Given that we have to maintain the baseball and softball fields along with the landscaping for the entire campus requiring significant manpower and equipment, it is hard to understand how eliminating the marginal cost for maintaining the stadium grass saved a significant annual cost.

I don't want to start another non-football thread, but what the hell was Collins wearing last night? He looked so sloppy it was bizarre.

Obviously there are way more important things, but it's weird to see a P5 head coach wearing a giant untucked sleeveless t shirt with undershirt sleeves (?) poking out. Chip Long looked a million times more put together.

He looks like he's wearing a poncho with the sleeves cut off

Pretty much this. Back when we put the new field in back in 2003, we made a big deal about pulling water from a creek, or well, or something and treating it and keeping it in tanks. We were proud of it.

Then, Stansbury arrives and we have to plow it up for that nasty rug we have now.
