The field looks terrible.

I forgot about that. Yeah, he left and we decided it wasn't worth it to replace him. We are dumb.

Sure. However our baseball surface has been known as tier 1 in baseball for 20+ years. Not just collegiate baseball, but baseball in general. Losing a staff member is not an excuse as we clearly have capable personnel on campus.

You almost sound like a lot of CFOs. The couple guys maintaining the baseball field in their spare time could also maintain the football field with little to no extra effort and no additional materials. Problem solved. Where’s the Facilities guy? Go kick his ass and get those maintenance guys to get off their butts & work harder!

Is paying a groundskeeper $100k a year really all that much for baseball, softball, and football?

Just keep events off the field until game day or a few spring practices

Alabama stole our grass man which is how our grass got so f’d up. I think they doubled his salary, gave him a staff full of assistants and bought him a house. It might have been coupled with poor season ticket sales in 2019 and running out of money when we went on that big spending spree stealing coaches like Collins, Key, Patenude and Thacker. Bottom line though was our talent got bought out from underneath us by the bastards to the west.
So Tech won't outbid Bama on anything. But dang, the dude had a staff he worked with here. I would think Tech could at least pony up to promote one of those guys once Bama poached us.

I don’t follow GT groundskeepers. All I’m saying is that’s the excuses provided for why we needed to shift to turf. Needed a good grass guy, costs a lot of money, holes get burned in the grass from all the rock concerts, etc. You’d think the turf would be affected by the last one, too but I guess it’s fire retardant and you can drop your doobie on it and there’s no harm.

I like grass. I hate turf. GT has a thin bench normally. We cannot afford dozens of turf injuries every year like Alabama, etc. I hate turf. I left too much of it on the old Grant Field back in the day and I’m sure it improved but I doubt much

Chris May is our current Director of Athletic grounds. He does an awesome job with the rest of fields. His crew has won many awards for their fields. He also helped change the baseball field over from Bermuda to bluegrass which is unconventional since it's a cool season grass but it has paid off big. Collins is the one that wanted this turf and some probably some Tech grads up at Shaw convinced the AA to buy it.

The only plus to this type of turf is you can paint it and use it for different uses. I actual liked the paint scheme they had this past week. It was simple and not ridiculous with the two different color endzones like they had for a few games before. I do wish we went back to real grass though.

Very interesting podcast with him. The dude knows his stuff. He said that they are going to replace the artificial turf in the indoor practice facility this year. He also said they there are no concerts lineup BDS but there will be an international soccer match played their at the end of September.

Hopefully he reads here and knows how much his work is appreciated (and missed). I hope the new AD has the stones to tear out the turf immediately. Shaw should pay for it for selling such a ööööty product.

The grounds crew bust their tails to keep fields looking great. If anyone has tried to keep weeds out of their yard they know how much work it takes to keep a good looking lawn. Plus their fields have to put up with players digging into them, sliding on them, etc. It's free aeration but still. And they have to deal with weather which is outside of their control. Grounds crews are very under appreciated and deserve more recognition.

We couldn’t offer him money, but we told him, when he’s dying, on his death bed, he will receive total consciousness. So he’s got that going for him, which is nice.

Which is ironic because many star international soccer players refuse to play on turf and will sit out games like this.

Grass doesn’t cause a burning rash when you dive and roll on it. They may be drama queens but they aren’t stupid.

I believe our nice looking field was bermuda. It grows great in hot weather but as soon as it starts to cool off in September it's stops growing so any damage done after it stops growing does not, naturally, get repaired. It's a normally declining look starting mid Sepetmebr. By dwag time in November, no warm weather sodded field looks decent

I can see the meeting now. “Let’s brainstorm some ideas on selling tickets” …. “How about hire a competent coach?” … “no.” ….. “let’s pay some 5 stars and put a great team on the field.” ….. “no.” ….. “let’s hire a clown coach, throw fake money on money down and buy a crappy field so folks will show up to see just how bad we’ve embarrassed them.” …. :ughrun::ughpink::ughrun::ughpink:
