The field looks terrible.

Thankfully it’s not just us. Michigan, OhioSt, Texas, Louisville, Notre Dame, etc once all had gorgeous fields. Now they all look like öööö.

This was a Collins move, because, you know, the Falcons play on turf. TS signed off on it but Geoff 100% is the reason we tore up our gorgeous field.
I thought the reason for the change was because the field became almost unplayable during the 2019 season. We had to bring in extra sod at the end of the season just to play the games. You can tell from the highlights from the VT game just how bad the field looked between the hashes.

I stand by my claim that 2019 was purposely done so artificial turf could be shoved down the fanbase's throat. I have never, ever, ever in all my years of attending GT football, ever seen our natural grass field look at bad for the Gagger game as it did that day.

Yup. Although part of me thinks that they just completely stopped maintaining it to a high standard in a misguided effort to save money after doing all the repainting and resigning. Although your more cynical take is entirely possible. It is horrible.

To be fair, there were 2 concerts lined up for it in 2020 before covid, but as others have said, counting on revenue from other events wasn't smart, especially with Truist Park doing 6-7 events per year on natural grass.

Gef is the reason. He wanted to practice on it and use it for more than just Saturdays.

Turns out, coconut husk turns muddy when wet. It supposedly is cooler than rubber pellets in the heat. Pick your poison. (Or just go back to wonderful grass, as Stingtalk has correctly pointed out.)

Or we could say we have a new technology where we actually grow artificial grass.

Alabama stole our grass man which is how our grass got so f’d up. I think they doubled his salary, gave him a staff full of assistants and bought him a house. It might have been coupled with poor season ticket sales in 2019 and running out of money when we went on that big spending spree stealing coaches like Collins, Key, Patenude and Thacker. Bottom line though was our talent got bought out from underneath us by the bastards to the west.

I forgot about that. Yeah, he left and we decided it wasn't worth it to replace him. We are dumb.

Great article, thanks for sharing. Plenty of reasonable takes in there that line up with my feelings.

Playing football on turf is like wearing a condom, or drinking a Diet Coke. It just doesn’t feel right.

The field would look better if we just spray painted it Georgia Tech Blue. It would still be a turd, but it would be a better looking turd.

As an AD if your new, unproven coach demands you change the field, and you agree, it’s still on you.

Coaches have a million requests all the time. They need new gyms, they need a new fitness center, they need more practice facilities, they need to hire more coaches, etc. It’s the AD’s job to ensure that good decisions are made. Especially when talking about stuff like facilities and infrastructure.

I actually wouldn’t mind if we played on a gold field. But I’m weird I get it.
