THE OFFICIAL Firing, House Cleaning, Night of Long Knives, Celebration, Disappointment Thread.

My fear is this will be Key as HC in waiting. Going to be incredibly disappointed if Key is the new OC.
I think this is what is going to happen. We don’t have much money and we have someone who I’m sure can excuse away his performance as the worst OC in college football to his friends and bosses T Stan and CGC. Maybe not the HC in Waiting part but he’ll get a big bump and take over offensive responsibilities or something while CGC solely focuses on defense. Saved salary for no DC and no new big name OC will go into coffers for buyout.

Cutting PNode and keeping Thacker is a s*** decision. One was slowly improving with a rebuilt depth chart. The other took relatively more talented players and regressed mightily.

I acknowledge we scored zilch in two games to end the year, but I lay that at the feet of Key and the OL, unless Paterbro was somehow holding them back. The defensive collapse was far more spectacular.

My guess: CGC takes over the D while Thacker sticks to linebackers. We get a new DB coach and CGC co-owns that position group with them. This means his attention is completely off the offense, so the new OC will really get to run the show. That will be the selling point. Key stays as OL coach and we splurge the raised money on an OC who can kickstart the squad right now.

It won't happen but I bet we've already called Dan Mullen.

Pay Mullen $1.5mm. I’m not enamored with him as a HC but he would do well with Sims and Gibbs on the offensive side of the ball. And we can’t afford to low ball someone with a lower floor.

The question is if Collins trying to be the DC will actually improve the defense.

100% agree. He put Dak Prescott with the Cowboys, and the selling point for recruiting would be pretty big. I don't see it happening but that's no reason not to call him.

I haven't looked into how his buyout is structured but we might not have to pay Mullen that much while he's collecting from UF since I'm assuming what he'd make here offsets that same amount in the buyout. Could possibly get away with signing him on for what Patenaude was making.

He's been a good DC before. Maybe like Thacker stepping back from DC, this would be CGC stepping back from game management on offense and handing over the keys to focus on his specialty. Trying to find the positives here, but I'm still stupefied Thacker isn't cleaning his desk.

It's surely worth the phone call. Much like Saban gives coaches a chance to recuperate and show their stuff while they audition for another chance at a headline job, there's no reason someone like Mullen wouldn't be interested in making a health paycheck while showing the world he's still got what it takes.

The dealbreakers in my dream world would be (a) not getting true independence to run the offense, likely not a problem here, (b) not liking the staff and co-workers he'd be joining, no idea if that's a problem or not, and (c) not wanting to hitch his wagon to a program/team/HC that he has no confidence can actually win, which is potentially a major problem here.

I think it's more like we'd give him a salary then subtract the yearly buyout payment they make to him from it. Could even use that as incentive, give a good contract salary that doesn't cost us more than Patenaude at first, but he gets to keep the higher salary if things go well enough he's still around.

I'm more worried about that other topic of how we practice. New coordinators can maybe force real change in that, but if it's just more Collins and we don't change that part of things, do we actually see a different result?

Actually, you don't, since here is a pic I took from my seat yesterday.

Can confirm. JJacket and his luscious mane were there above the N in Johnson. A small smidgen of gold in what was an otherwise red sea.
