The Top-40 Players of the Coach Paul Johnson Era -- w/ Highlights, Stats, and Facts

That 2016 Big Play Video reminded me how much I hate "HOUSE CALL!"

Also, whoever got Marshall(JMU?) should be thanking God for Dedrick being so damn good. Marshall is awesome.

Gotta think top 5 easy.

Think he's got a strong argument for #1. He was dominant against stud DLs. Mine:

1) Shaq Mason
2) Derrick Morgan
3) Demaryius Thomas
4) Uzzi
5) Justin Thomas

Dwyer, Walker/Richards/Johnson, Roddy, Nesbitt, and Morgan Burnett are probably close behind rounding out the Top 10.

What about Attouchu? Gotta think he has to be somewhere up in the top 15 as well.

I saw Uzzi the other day. He does not look like a typical lineman. Shredded.

#33: Brad Jefferson (2007-2010)
Stopping Knowshon at the goal-line

Brad as a freshman making a stop on a kick return at 2:58!

At 1:56 BJ forces a fumble that Tarrant picks up for 6! Also makes a tackle on the next play in this highlight vid, and at 3:37 also

Huge sack on Russell Wilson at 1:20!

Jefferson throws a defender out of bounds at 1:28

Brad Jefferson played in 48 games as a Jacket, 36 of them under Paul Johnson. Only missing 5 games in his four year letter-winning career, Jefferson was the epitome of consistency. He finished with 213 tackles, including 16.5 for a loss. He led the team in tackles and was honorable mention all-ACC in 2009. He finished 10th in the ACC in tackles that season and also had 3 forced fumbles. Jefferson had a lot of sacks from the LB position as a Senior with four as well.

#32: Harrison Butker (2013-2016)
Harrison beats the Chokies

On field view of "The Kick"

Harrison hits one from 49 yards at :40 seconds

Harrison ties the game vs. FSU in 2015

Butker hits a 52 yarder in the rain @ Duke at 5:41

Harrison Butker is Georgia Tech's all time leading points scorer. Playing in 52 career games, Butker was our leg for four seasons. If you considered his games also as starts, it would tie Roddy Jones for the most starts in Jackets history. He hit a lot of huge field goals and should be considered one of, if not our best, kicker of all-time (Certainly top 3). He finished his career with 208/210 in PAT's, 43/60 FG's, and 337 total points. He has multiple other accolades as well: 9th all-time in points scored in the ACC, 2nd most PAT's attempted in ACC history, most Extra points made in ACC history, and led the ACC in FG % as a senior with 15/17 hit.

#31: Jamal Golden (2011-2015)
Kick Return TD #1

Kick Return TD #2

His third career TD

Spotlight on Golden before his Senior year

Full career highlights (His USC punt return and all interceptions are in this one)

Jamal Golden, one of our best return men of all-time, played in 54 games spread across 5 seasons on the flats which is tied with Jemea Thomas, TJ Barnes, and Rod Sweeting for the most all-time. An injury early in his junior year was early enough to get a redshirt, and he went on to play in 2014 and 2015 as well. Jamal Golden never played a snap of offense, but still managed 1,860 career all-purpose yards. He was an efficient ball hawk, especially in 2014 when he picked off four passes. He finished with 169 tackles, 8 Ints, 8 official PD's (he had much more than that unofficially), forced 4 fumbles, and scored 3 touchdowns. His notable accolades: Top five in the ACC in punt return avg in 2012 and 2015, 16th all-time ACC kick return yards, top-10 in kick return avg in the ACC in three seasons, 2nd in the ACC in interceptions in 2014, and was top five in INT yards in 2012 and 2014. Third team all-ACC in 2014.

#30: Roddy Jones (2007-2011)
Roddy's longest career run was a huge 61 yard gallop on third down

Roddy's second longest run in his career was in the same game, also on third down! This is probably one of the top three biggest plays in any of our last three wins over the dawgs.

Roddy's second best career game came against Miami in 2008. Here is his 40 yard scamper from that game

Roddy's first career touchdown came in his (and CPJ's) first game on the flats

Roddy's first of five career reception TD's

What can I say about Roddy Jones? A Gailey recruit who fit perfectly into CPJ's offense, Roddy has remained a fan favorite throughout his post-Georgia Tech career. One thing people don't know about him is he is Georgia Tech's all time leader in games started with 52! He played in every game from 2008-2011 except for the 2009 opener and started all of the games he played in. His 52 games played is third all-time on the flats, and his 1,846 rushing yards is 13th all-time. His 19 career touchdowns is good for 15th all-time in the Jacket record book. His best season was his Freshman year, when he had 845 yards from scrimmage. His carries dipped a little bit from 80 his freshman year to averaging 53 for the next three seasons, but he was electric when he got the ball. In his Senior year he averaged 8 yards a carry and 17 yards reception. As a freshman, Roddy was a top-10 kick returner in the ACC, finishing 8th in average yards per return. I look forward to watching Roddy in a broadcasting booth this upcoming season.

#29: Stephen Hill (2009-2011)
Stephen channels Megatron in his best career game. Hauled in 6/151 and a TD, also dropped a wide open pass that would have given him 200 receiving yards

Stephen's only rushing touchdown

Draft day profile with some of his best catches

Hill channeled BeyBey for his career long 82 yard catch.

Awesome Hill highlight reel

Stephen Hill is one of the best athletes we've had in the CPJ era and before. He holds the all-time Georgia Tech record for yards per catch in a single season with 29.3 in 2011. He finished his career with 49 receptions for 1,248 yards and 9 touchdowns. He also ran the ball 12 times for 147 yards and 1 score. His Junior year, the last season he played for the Jackets, he had 28 catches for 820 yards and five TD's. The 820 yards is 13th all-time for a single season receiving in GT history, and his 9 receiving touchdowns is 14th. His 1,248 receiving yards is good for 16 at Tech all-time. His record of 29.3 YPC in 2011 was also the nations top number that season.

#28: Freddie Burden (2012-2016)
Tape vs. Pitt

Freddie Burden story

Tape vs. Miami

Doing drills

Freddie made a huge block on the Qua leap. His block opened the lane for him to be able to leap in the first place

Freddie was a winner the day he came onto the flats. He redshirted in 2012, but was a huge contributer otherwise, scoring scout team player of the year. in 2013 he sat out the entire year with an injury, so it wasn't until 2014 he began his three year run as Georgia Tech's center. From 2014-2016 he played and started every game for the Jackets except for 2016 VT due to injury. Here are his career accolades:

2014- Tech's offensive line was 2nd in the country in sacks per game and paced an attack that led the country in rushing. Burden was honorable mention all-ACC.
2016- Named first team all-ACC by ESPN and third team all-ACC by the media. Was ACC OL of the week vs. Vanderbilt, where he took eight defenders to the ground.
-38 career starts

#27: Orwin Smith (2009-2012)
Offense vs. Kansas

Before his senior year

Powerful run by Orwin

An hour worth of Orwin highlights

Bad quality but good set of highlights

Orwin Smith played in 51 career games for Georgia Tech, and has a huge list of accomplishments and accolades. Statistically, Orwin ran the ball 198 times for 1,839 yards and 20 TDs. His career average is an incredible 9.3 yards a carry. Through the air he was just as dangerous, compiling 45 receptions for 815 yards, 18.1 average, and 2 TDs. Overall Orwin had 243 touches for 2,645 yards and 22 td's, averaging a first down a TOUCH. Adding in his Kick return yards, Orwin finished with 4,278 all-purpose yards. His junior year was probably his best, running the ball 61 times for 615 yards and 11 TD's. He caught 13 passes for 306 yards and a TD as well.

Accolades:
2nd - career kickoff returns (76)

#26: D.J. White (2012-2015)

2014 highlights

The Pick

Running down James Conner for a touchback

Pick six vs. NCST

As a freshman in 2012, CPJ loved the potential he saw in DJ. In limited action, he had five solo tackles and forced two fumbles. From 2013-2015 he would start 34 games and play in 37. In his career, he played 47 games on the flats. In the Music City Bowl White had 13 tackles for a career high. White was an all-ACC honorable mention in all outlets, partly thanks to his three game in a row interception streak he had in 2014 from his pick six vs ncst to "the Pick". He finishes his career with 201 tackles, 7 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles, and a TD.

So, "Georgia Tech's all time leading points scorer" doesn't crack your top 10 ...

Strike 2.
