The defense was fantastic last night. They scored a third of our points, and only gave up 7 points on 3 consecutive fumbles. They certainly did enough to win.
Even after all the offensive incompetence we still had a shot in the end until Errin Joe had an aneurysm.
Virginia Tech - don't score on offense in 3 quarters
fixed
ND - deer in headlights, missed FGs
Duke - 13 points given up on special teams
UNC - blow a 21 point lead at home
Clemson - get beat like a normal team
Pittsburgh - throw a pick on the drive to tie after 56 yard field goal
Virginia - made a terrible team look good
Virginia Tech - dumb personal foul takes you out on the final drive
Yup, lots of tripping on our dicks this season. It isn't like we are light years away from having a good season, we're just finding new and creative ways to lose.
Last night we had it rolling in the first quarter. Then we lost our minds. This season doesn't make sense.
We weren't far from having one of those last night - maybe next game, you'll have to watch to find out!
FWIW, CPJ seemed sympathetic to Joe, much moreso than Attachou. He viewed the call as very borderline and said "I guess you have to keep your cool," in a sort of resigned way. VT was badgering and pushing the line on the whistle all game.
Well, here's the thing. When we make these mistakes, it's not like every other team in the nation is playing perfectly. Allen dropping the pass wasn't the first time in history a running back dropped a pass. The unsportsmanlike against Joe wasn't the first personal foul against an OL in history.
FSU had four false starts, an illegal procedure and two bad snaps when they played us. Could you imagine what would happen if the teams were reversed? How much crap would CPJ have received about the false starts? It's not like Jimbo Fisher forgot how to coach. But he has an extremely young OL.
I'm sure this post and others seem too Pollyannish. But it's also true that CPJ can't cut somebody unfocused and pick up somebody new on waivers. Just like all other coaches, he can't control players like robots. It's not to say there aren't coaches who really do a worse job than other coaches, and should be replaced. A Charlie Weis or a Paul Hewitt really could not get the same level of recruiting or execution as other coaches, and that was clear.
But it's also not possible for every team to go 15-0. Somebody has to lose every game. It's not sustainable for every school in the country to continually fire coaches until they become Bama.
Our team has perfected the sweet spot of being bad while playing just well enough to draw you in.
This year, for sure. Vegas is either in on it or victim to it, too - we've been favored in all but 2 games (and we won one of the ones we weren't favored in).
