White-Out

This thread is pitiful...

How would you feel if you were a player and 50,000 people dared the cold and the fear of looking dumb to unify together and support YOU?

That's what I thought.

That's what I thought.

My thoughts from the beginning have been that if people put half of the energy they have spent bitching about the whole thing into actually doing it, it would work.

And to the guy who thinks he just told off the world by saying he'll wear what he wants: Please promptly go **** yourself. Don't try to spout off how you are such a longtime/loyal supporter when you can't even wear something white for the team that you apparently have been standing by for sooooooooo long. I agree that this thread and argument is pitiful. How hard is it to just shut up and do it? Don't like it? Fine, that's all well and good. But why can't you just suck it up, wear white, and let it work? This isn't a gold out where there are fifty bazillion shades to choose from, it's white. Just white. God grief, the world will NOT cease to exist just because you wear white to the game.

If you don't wear white to the game I hope you get drug behind a car like the dog in National Lampoon's Vacation.

I'll wear something white to the game. But, I think the whole idea is unnecessary. When I see an NBA arena or a college stadium in all white or black or whatever color you choose, I am not impressed. When I see a student section in the same color, that's a different story. This idea should appeal to students.

I'm telling you, if loyal Tech fans who have supported the team for many, many years come to the game and older men or their wives wear dark heavy coats, gold blazers, or whatever they choose and they get abused by other Tech fans for not wearing a white sweatshirt or T-shirt, I'll be angry.

What helps a team is a stadium sold-out with loud and loyal fans of the home team game after game. A packed house for Mississippi State, Duke, and Gardner-Webb with a minimum of visitor fans in the stands can be the fan base's contribution to recruiting, not everyone wearing the same color to a game.

If we are going to have a white out in '09, make it UGA. What really hurts our recruiting is the massive amount of red that gets in our stadium every other year for the Dawg game.

If some "long time Tech fan" who's been through oh so much for so long started spouting off on how they're above participating in the white out, like some genius on here, I will not hesitate to call them out on it. It doesn't make any sense to try to throw around your long term dedication to this program but yet, be unable to find something white to wear for one night. It's hypocritical, and that's something I truly cannot stand in this world.

I agree with you that u[sic]ga would be a good game for a white-out. However, it wouldn't do anything to downplay them showing up in their red. If anything, it would make it stand out more. Have you seen the highlights from the Penn State/Illinois game where there was a cluster of orange in the white that showed bright as day? If you want to get rid of the red in the stadium, you would need to get Tech fans to stop selling their tickets to uga fans, and not have that game part of any fancy "three-pack" or other deal. Of course, this is an entirely different argument itself that has been beat to death.

It does show unity within the fan base. I was at Auburn this past weekend against Tennessee. All the AU faithful wore blue and when you went in the stadium the few TN fans were very easy to pick out.

I guess i think its a good idea as long as you dont make it the theme of the game and blow it out of proportion the way Richt and the UGA faithful do. still though, with athens so close by the Tech fans would just look like wannabe's

What a die hard! You cant even throw a white shirt on. Man you really support your team I tell you what. After that rant you just went on saying how much you spend and care it makes it hard to beleive it because you cant even expend the effort to put something white on!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope you dont come to the game! Stay at home. You obviously dont care about GT. You cant. It is impossible to care and be proud about your team and say that you will wear what you damn please. That is why GT fans are punch lines around the country!!! Other schools cant wait to participate in school spirit and try to make the best environment possible!!!

NO NO NO not tech "fans". They *itch and complain about "HAVING" to wear white. Fans like you embarrass me to be a tech fan. Dont wear what you want to wear. Dont come to the game. I would rather have 20000 tech fans wearing white than have 20000 fans in white and 30000 half ass it.

GET A CLUE!!!!

You know why we cant do gold outs and white outs because you dont participate. You are the one that fans get mad at for not wearing the color! Do you not get that!?!?

I bet you supported Gailey

Where to start? The easy one first. How much would you like to bet? If you can prove that I supported ccg I will send you my uga game tickets for free. If I can prove I didn't, then you will not post on this board for a year. Deal?

As to the rest, I can't remember when you became the decider as to who supports GT and who doesn't; or who comes to games and who doesn't. Perhaps you will let me know when that happened. But then again, I should realize that I am probably dealing with a somebody who does not qualify age wise to vote. Just e-mail or call our AD and tell him to include in his next "Good Word" a statement that if one does not or will not wear what he says must be worn, then just don't come to the game; that he would rather have 20,000 in white than 40,000 in white or whatever and that those that don't wear white or are not "real tech fans" and that their money for tickets and contributions will no longer be accepted. Go ahead and do it. He has responded to every e-mail I have ever sent him and has returned every one of my calls. He will respond to yours, if it is worth responding to.

And finally you are obviously not one to know what is possible and what is not. As someone else said, you are an idiot. See, I do have at least three clues. I know who you are, what you are, and what you are not.

Hey man, Im not about to question anybodies fanhood, and you clearly have plenty of money given the large amounts of support you have shown our program, and regardless of whether you agree or not, I dont think it is too much for you to buy a white piece of apparel appropriate for the game. I, personally, will not be running around pinching people for not wearing white, but I will think to myself, "there's another typical example of why tech fans are so often criticized as not being committed".

Not wearing white is Gailey like.

Where do you get off on the fact that your old?

Wear white

I seem to be in the majority on this one.
A guy that is so old and wise and donate to the prgoram should be able to afford a white shirt.

Wear white

Wear white

First, let me admit that I am (a) a liar and (b) a moron since I am still reading this thread when I said I would not, and still posting replies.

But I wanted to offer the following clarification which I think will reduce some of the tension on this wonderful forum about the white-out topic.

I don't think any fan here has posted anything suggesting a REFUSAL to wear white or an unwillingness to support the team. If I am lucky enough to be able to attend that game, I'll go along with it and wear white. However, one of the joys of this forum is that it gives fans an outlet to express their reaction to various team news we hear between the games. The fact is, I have ALWAYS felt that white-outs (or black-outs, or green-outs, or whatever) are stupid for a variety of reasons, all of which by now have been covered on this thread by me or someone else. That's my opinion, and it's the only one I've got on this issue, I'm not going to apologize for it, and I felt like it was okay to share it here on the forum. But, the reaction to my opinion (and to those of other loyal, devoted fans with similar opinions) has been a little bit misplaced. Reactions have been framed as if what the so-called "protesters" have said is, "I don't care enough about the team to wear white." This is precisely NOT what I said. Nobody here has said that. If Coach Johnson called me and said that I need to drive to the stadium with a case of Capri Suns and twinkies for the team, and I thought he was sincere about it, I would do it. If Mr. Radakovich wanted me to post a sign in my front yard that said, "Bring Back the Arsenio Hall Show" because it would mean a lot to the team, and I thought he was sincere about it, I would do it. I would LOVE the opportunity to help the team. If wearing a pink ballerina outfit at a sports bar would have helped us beat Va Tech, I'd have done that. The point that the "protesters" and I have made isn't that there are certain things like (gasp) wearing a white sweatshirt that are so far out that we won't do it to help the team; the point is that we question whether this white-out will actually help the team.

But if everyone is going forward with it, I'm sure that we'll all end up wearing white also. That shouldn't remove our right to discuss and question whether the white-out is a good move. And if some of you get too upset reading posts like that, I can't imagine how in the world you make it through a newspaper. Similarly, I wanted Chan fired more than anyone last season. But, if they had not fired him and he was our coach this year, I'd still cheer for him and desire his success and attend games all the same. Same with the white out. I don't like it, but don't accuse me of trying to ruin it just because I express my opinions about it.

Who cares if it helps the team? Just wear white and shutup. That goes to everyone, not you specifically NATS.

I'm not reading that.

Why is it sooo hard for people to wear white for a day? Is it because it's after labor day?

Jonathan and I are going to change our norm of black and gold paint....We are going to paint Gold GT (he is the G, and I am the T) outlined in black. The rest we will paint white. I can't wait...we have not painted the first two games.

...white shirt, GT logo, GT hat, GT belt for goodness sakes, vanilla white offense. Chan is ready for 'white-out'.

And if someone tries to talk to you about it in person, you can cover your ears and go "LA LA LA LA LA LA LA...."

No, but some better paragraph breaks would have helped.

And a dissertation on white clothes is not something that interests me.

No, but some better paragraph breaks would have helped.

Well then let me give you the compressed version with clearly enumerated ideas:

(1) Nobody ever said they refused to wear white because they didn't care enough about the team.

(2) The people who have been dubbed "protesters" are only raising questions whether the white-out is a good idea.

(3) Those who cannot handle this without getting their panties in a wad and making the same lame joke about Labor Day over and over and over and over again probably belong in a place where the voicing of objections is more restricted, such as China, Nazi Germany, or The Hive.

I think the white-out is mostly for ESPN's benefit. It will look good from the blimp and attract some viewer interest. But it may also charge up the players and might be good for recruiting. Who cares. I'll wear something white if that's what GT wants. It's a small request considering the work the players go through to give us a great season of football. I'm not going to get jazzed up about being part of the fashion pep rally, because the game should be about football, and not what the fans are wearing. Let's do it but don't make a big deal about it.
