Why Brent Key should be HC

Chadwell would be a great coach. There’s literally no denying that. He’s succeeded everywhere he’s gone, and his style isn’t anything like the CPJ wishbone. It’s a completely different playbook. It’s more like Harbough’s read option for the Ravens. We could easily run that here.

As of right now, Key has defeated the top 2 teams in the Coastal. Dependent upon next weeks games, Tech probably ends up 3rd, behind UNC and Pitt. On the other hand you have UVA and Miami. Should have beaten both, but didn’t.

Playing up and down is a Hallmark of poor discipline. Not that I think that's all keys fault given what he inherited.

Key is not pulling any recruits. I’m glad we got the win but this every other week fan boy öööö is garbage
I hear you. I understand that some staff changes are needed. But don’t you think Weinke developed Gibson? Why don’t you think Key is pulling any recruits? I’d want to me or my sons to play for him.

Key has shown enough good traits to get an interview and be accepted by many fans if hired (with the right contract). He has also shown enough flaws, along with his inexperience, to not be our #1 choice.
What flaws? He won with big injuries tonight. He upset a -21.5 Vegas bet. That was probably $10,000 to win $35,000 or more. Just guessing.

I agree. But it’s a huge step up for Chadwell in P5. How many great small FB coaches have failed in P5 at programs that’s easier to recruit than GT?
You’re following the Paul Johnson paradigm. He was the exception, rather than the rule imo. GT struck gold with PJ. Unlikely Chadwell is PJ.

it’s a risk. And I’m glad I’m not in charge of taking. It’s going to be hard to explain not hiring a coach that won as much as Key did if your new hire fails.

UGA will be 31-7. But it’s still goIng to be hard to explain a pass on Key who won with backups.

Key secured his job tonight. And it was well earned.

Is anyone going to mention the fact that we dominated up front on both OL and DL.. with an ole offensive lineman as head coach?? Just sayin.. this is our brand. Georgia Tech is a lunch pale, bloody nose (Keith Brooking) style team that has to outwork people up front to make up for talent gaps. This is who we are, and this is why Brent Key should be our HC

Reasons why Brent Key should be our HC:
- Results, 4-3 as interim coach, including wins against two ranked teams on the road
- Improved D, he is allowing Thacker and the assistants to come up with schemes and rotating player to keep them fresh / situational
- Improved O, finding what the O-Line can do and going with it. Not trying to force plays that we are incapable of pulling off.
- Whole team, we are playing / rotating in our 4th string QB, Nickel, and 3rd string OL, DL.....and these guys have a clue what to do
- Selecting the right player, from Kicker to RB, we upgraded at a few critical positions
- Special Teams, WTF was up with our punt protection scheme to start the season? He fixed it.
- Recruiting, we have picked up a few recruits the past few weeks. Key is no Noob. He knows what it takes to recruit. He knows he needs dynamic, enthusiastic, convincing assistants.
- Continuity, keep the staff together to help player morale, recruiting, and teaching. There will be some staff turnover, need an OL coach for example. I am OK with Long - Wienke....and I'm falling in love with Thacker, Tillman, Knight, Turner, etc.
- GT Alum, I am biased in his favor. Helps with recruiting.
- He's cheap

“It’s just the messages that he preaches,” Brooks said. “He’s so impactful to us. He loves us, and we love him. So the same way we play for each other as teammates, we play for him as our coach.”

“It starts with coach Key, he’s done a great job as the interim,” Phommachanh said. “He set the tone the first day when we found out what was going on. Ever since then, he’s rallied the troops. Shout-out to coach Key for being about the team and being about Georgia Tech.”

How many P5 coaches CAME from G6 teams? The vast majority of coaches came from lower level teams, and followed the pyramid up to P5.

I still don’t think Key secured anything. Great, he won with backups. But those backups were just game managers. I don’t think we threw the ball more than 20 yards in the air all game. It’s all about the defense, and that’s why we won. They held a heisman contender in check all game.

These are reasons why Coach Key has been a great interim coach. These aren't the reasons why Coach Key should be the full time coach going forward.

He needs to tell the story to the decision makers about how he will build the program (recruiting, NIL, hiring/retaining staff, etc.). I have no idea if Key has the maturity and vision to lead the program through the offseason and into the future.

In the meantime, I hope we beat UGA this week and the choice become obvious...

I think many of us are understandably overreacting in the afterglow of a big win. If Downs catches that pass, we probably lose and are not even having this conversation. It’s kinda silly to make a long term coaching decision based on a fluke play.

That being said, Key has done decently well in a small sample size. Well enough that I imagine he’ll at least get to pitch his vision to JBatt. If he has a long term plan to go along with his ability to get the kids fired up, maybe he’ll get his shot.

People don't want to hear it but this is still largely Collins's team. Key didn't build it. Key is probably better at actually coaching football, but can he recruit? Can he put together a good staff? Can he run and represent a program?

Remember Key just a couple years ago posted something inappropriate after the death of a former player and had to delete it. I think sometimes he could represent Tech better with the press too.

I think the best path for Key would be for him to leverage this modest success to get a HC job at some lower school. Then if he does well maybe he can be the next HC here down the road. We can do better for now.

I don't know about you, but I'm talking about more than just the UNC game.
- Key has in multiple games shown Very conservative decision making in the punt/kick/go for it department and might also allow playcalling to go conservative when we have a good lead (harder to tell on that since we rarely have had one).
- He's gotten the team to play up against bigger teams when no one thinks we can win (Pitt, UNC), but we've failed pretty miserably in the games we were favored to win (UVA, Miami).
- He has not managed the QB situation very gracefully (is Sims available or is he not? Gibson vs Pyron). Could even maybe say something for the UNC game on that; we were definitely just preset swapping the 2 every possession and only later started thinking about who we sent out.
