Why building a culture with Geoff Collins is more important than winning

That grade was given to him in retrospect. Nobody had him higher than a 4 star when he graduated HS and signed with GT.
That's what I thought as well. I didn't remember him being a 5 star. I was actually agreeing with the original comment.

As to the other. Yes we have holes to fill, but that comes down to recruiting. Why hype a Fr QB when your OL has been nonexistent. The solution is sign 2-3 stars and DEVELOP them which isn't our strong suit. Had we focused on that, the need for plug and play now doesn't exist ... as much. That's my point. As for Temple, I threw that out there as reference that HE hasn't really done a damn thing regardless. I don't think he could win at Archer HS based on what I've seen from my seats. But you're not wrong in comparing the apples to oranges. But fact is even at Temple a good coach (based on who's been there) can win anywhere and this dipshit can't. He's had enough talent to generate 15 wins in the last 3. The previous coach did with less. It's not the culture, it's the coach. Miami made the same mistake as GT by hiring him and Al Golden. Matt Rhule has proven himself to do more with less and damn near made the Playoff and they were dead before he got there after the scandal. Good Coaches Win.... there's no denying it. Do you think Matt Rhule could've won 10 gms in 3 yrs? I do

Collins has been a head college football coach for 5 years now. The only culture he has built as a head coach is losing. Temple had two 10 win seasons before he took over. He took them to heights of 7 and 8 wins. I’m sure they had a top 3 hardest schedule those years like folks are claiming for us. He took a perennial 7-8 win team in GT and turned them into a 3 win team with hopes of becoming a 5-6 win team. Sad.

Recruiting means nothing without wins. We are a dead program with him at the top so we are just playing it out at this point. The next 4 years will be more of the same as we finish the Collins experiment and turn to the next guy who will have to rebuild GT’s football reputation. A lost decade.

Anyone that thinks we’ve had a hard schedule since he started is dumber than a box of used trojans. He gave us the DP. Death penalty by double penetration. Actually Todd Stansbury did by f’n the the program … he’s more to blame than the coach. If he lost both his legs in a paper airplane experiment I would laugh and call him WeeMan. GT is the laughing stock of college football. Of course it’s nothing but upside now …. We can’t get any worse other than abandoning the program.

The fact they both have the audacity to ask people to come, watch on tv or god forbid donate money shows how stupid our fans in the stands (guessing all 29 of them left) are. It would more exciting to watch them both rinse their mouth out with buckshot. It’s a joke

CPJ had what 2 losing seasons in his career at Tech. That HS offense at minimum gave us a fighting chance but not good enough.

We’re getting played by Uncle Rico hype at QB1 with Napoleon calling plays with chapstick stuck in his teeth. I’m literally amazed how many folks on here believe the guy is anything better than honorable mention at a Midget Billiards Tourney

No offense brother, but this has to be in Stingtalk’s top 5 melts of all time….you even got a Napoleon Dynamite reference in. Well done sir!

What is sad is that he is suppose to be this "Defensive Guru" and that has been Tech's weakness in the Geoff Collins era, our historic transformation on offense hasn't really been the problem.

There won’t be next 4 years with Collins. If he doesn’t produce results now he’s gonna be gone. They have a hard enough time getting people to buy season tickets now, they’re using Synjyn Days to sell tickets for em, they won’t have a leg to stand on if we have another bad season there isn’t a regime change. Sacrificing coaches bought him one more year, it’s his head on the chopping block this season.

Exactly. It’s right there in the choosing. Between Tech season tix and jacking off with sandpaper

I’d advise neither but if you choose option 2 I’d try it on the dog first

But we did focus on that. Like I said, what was your solution? Play them before they were ready? Those younger guys are just now becoming ready to contribute. It may have been different or they may could have contributed sooner if we were a low G5 or FCS school. Or also if their development didn't get hindered by COVID year. Most OL that we've signed were HS recruits but we did take a few underclassmen transfers to help build that younger group and develop them. I've gone through this time and time again with folks but it seems to go in one ear and out the other because it doesn't fit their narrative.

2019: Too late in the game to get in on new OL recruits with new staff. Took a grad transfer OT Southers to fill a need.

2020: Jordan Williams, Michael Rankins, Paula Vaipulu, Wing Green, Ryan Spiers, Cade Kootsouradis. Williams has been playing and starting since freshman year. Rankins had high upside as an OT but apparently quit football. Vaipulu will be competing for a starting OG spot this season and will be 1st off the bench if he's not starting... 3rd year in the program, that's when contributions are expected to start for OL. Wing Green will be competing for a starting OT spot and will be 1st off the bench if he's not starting, same as Paula, 3rd year in and now is when to expect contribution. Ryan Spiers had a career ending injury last season and is now a student-coach. Cade Kootsouradis was sort of a project but after 2 years of development he will likely be in the rotation as a backup G. Took Ryan Johnson as a grad transfer because we needed an experienced G that could start immediately.

2021: Weston Franklin, Jakiah Leftwich. Franklin will likely be the starting C and Leftwich will likely be a starting T, both in year 2. Took Nick Pendley as a transfer (2019 class) to develop with our guys and have 3 years left to play. Had a career ending injury last year and is also now a student-coach. Took Devin Cochran as a grad transfer to fill a need at LT. Took KJ Kirby as a grad transfer to add depth.

2022: Tyler Gibson, Brandon Best, Bobby Mooney. Gibson is impressing in offseason workouts, Best possibly could be competing for backup C role. Mooney will need to develop a little more. Took Pierce Quick, Paul Tchio, Corey Robinson, and RJ Adams as transfers. All underclassmen that can develop and grow with the current guys. Quick and Tchio will likely be starters, Robinson and Adams will likely be backups, but these guys aren't 1 year grad transfer "rentals." These guys all have multiple years left to contribute to the program and provide some cohesiveness and quality depth. We didn't have a "need" for plug and play guys this year, but when guys like Quick and Tchio become available in the portal and want to join, those are they types you can't pass up unless that room is already bursting at the seams, which it was not. The portal has become a tool and you must take advantage of it or you will be left behind. It's like using a lug wrench to change a tire and someone comes by and offers you an impact but you decline because you want to use what you already have.

Our starting OL this season should have 3 more seasons to play together.

TStan needs to precede him out the door.

Collins rode the coat tails of Matt Rhule. He just said the right words and our AD fell for every word. The only culture, that Collins teaches, is a losing culture. A lot of money poured into, yet another, bad coach. Our AD should be fired, for being stupid.

Not arguing that. I understand the why's I just don't see us getting better with it. Our OL has been nonexistent even with the transfers but you're right. It's taking us longer. I guess that's the rub, we get them and they fade away or we have a COVID yr etc. It seems our staff is comfortable placing bandaids on bullet holes. Maybe if every other facet of the game wasn't as uniquely "now ya see it now ya don't" it'd be an easier pill to swallow.

In the end, I guess there's gratitude. Hopefully the pattern continues long enough to get this clown out of town and sent to the Island of Crete. That is the only optimistic thing I can say about it. And I'm praying we haven't hired Long as an HC in waiting.

Elliott would've been a better fit here in my opinion.

I'm more tired of the fan base blaming our current lack of wins on CPJ because he had no problem producing way more with way less. I don't see how anyone can argue that point.

Well I don't like making excuses either but when you go back and look at the ones we've lost to injury, the ones who have had to play hurt almost their whole careers (Minihan, Cooper), and then throw COVID in on top of that, it's fairly understandable that the OL development is taking longer. And we're not comfortable placing bandaids on bullet holes, it's just that bandaids are all we seem to have available. It's either put a bandaid on it or let it bleed out.

Here's where this argument always goes sideways. I don't think there is anybody on there that would argue that. Everybody knows he won more with less, but the long term problem was always going to be, "what happens to GT after the option?" CPJ would win with his offense with lesser players, but NOBODY can consistently win in a more traditional one with them. I knew it from the moment he was hired, and hell I wanted him at the time too, but I knew if and when we ever phased away from the option it would be a nightmare. I had hope and thought after those first couple successful seasons when folks saw that it would work that we may continue to get same type of recruits like we were but that dried up. The longer it lasted the worse it became for whoever the successor would be. I don't believe there is a soul on this planet that could have come in and taken the OL we had for the first couple years and built a successful offense around it unless it was another option coach.

Rode on his coat tails? You realize Rhule and Collins only ever worked together at Western Carolina 2002-2005 (Collins was DC), and IIRC Rhule is the one that recommended Collins for the Temple job when he left for Baylor.

People wake up on here to post lies

I know Collins won’t be here, but we are looking at another 4 years until the next guy can build us back. Collins will be gone after this year. Then the next guy will spend 2 years trying to convince high schoolers to come here who have only seen GT not just lose but suck while doing it. All of the goodwill and right moves Collins made the first year here to reignite high schoolers to look at GT are gone because the guy can’t fake coaching on game day. Heck, look at the portal guys. Guys we are going after are choosing other schools we all believe are lower than us but the players are telling us a different story. We are at an all time low. If we get blasted by Clemson on national TV to start the season our reputation will be cemented because most high school players and coaches won’t give us another look even if we turn out to be average.

This is another ridiculous comment. CGC has to win 6 this year. The talent is there. If he can’t put together 6 wins, the next coach will absolutely have enough talent to hit the ground running. There will NOT be a “4 year rebuild.” That’s just stupid.

No to all of this. Another incredulous statement

Did getting blasted by Kentucky hurt Louisville with HSers?
