But we did focus on that. Like I said, what was your solution? Play them before they were ready? Those younger guys are just now becoming ready to contribute. It may have been different or they may could have contributed sooner if we were a low G5 or FCS school. Or also if their development didn't get hindered by COVID year. Most OL that we've signed were HS recruits but we did take a few underclassmen transfers to help build that younger group and develop them. I've gone through this time and time again with folks but it seems to go in one ear and out the other because it doesn't fit their narrative.
2019: Too late in the game to get in on new OL recruits with new staff. Took a grad transfer OT Southers to fill a need.
2020: Jordan Williams, Michael Rankins, Paula Vaipulu, Wing Green, Ryan Spiers, Cade Kootsouradis. Williams has been playing and starting since freshman year. Rankins had high upside as an OT but apparently quit football. Vaipulu will be competing for a starting OG spot this season and will be 1st off the bench if he's not starting... 3rd year in the program, that's when contributions are expected to start for OL. Wing Green will be competing for a starting OT spot and will be 1st off the bench if he's not starting, same as Paula, 3rd year in and now is when to expect contribution. Ryan Spiers had a career ending injury last season and is now a student-coach. Cade Kootsouradis was sort of a project but after 2 years of development he will likely be in the rotation as a backup G. Took Ryan Johnson as a grad transfer because we needed an experienced G that could start immediately.
2021: Weston Franklin, Jakiah Leftwich. Franklin will likely be the starting C and Leftwich will likely be a starting T, both in year 2. Took Nick Pendley as a transfer (2019 class) to develop with our guys and have 3 years left to play. Had a career ending injury last year and is also now a student-coach. Took Devin Cochran as a grad transfer to fill a need at LT. Took KJ Kirby as a grad transfer to add depth.
2022: Tyler Gibson, Brandon Best, Bobby Mooney. Gibson is impressing in offseason workouts, Best possibly could be competing for backup C role. Mooney will need to develop a little more. Took Pierce Quick, Paul Tchio, Corey Robinson, and RJ Adams as transfers. All underclassmen that can develop and grow with the current guys. Quick and Tchio will likely be starters, Robinson and Adams will likely be backups, but these guys aren't 1 year grad transfer "rentals." These guys all have multiple years left to contribute to the program and provide some cohesiveness and quality depth. We didn't have a "need" for plug and play guys this year, but when guys like Quick and Tchio become available in the portal and want to join, those are they types you can't pass up unless that room is already bursting at the seams, which it was not. The portal has become a tool and you must take advantage of it or you will be left behind. It's like using a lug wrench to change a tire and someone comes by and offers you an impact but you decline because you want to use what you already have.
Our starting OL this season should have 3 more seasons to play together.
