Why can't we fill up the stadium?

Were you at the same Death Valley that I was? THe stadium was loud for maybe 5 minutes during the game while the team was winning. Other than that, it was mostly only on third downs. It was pathetic how quickly the fans shut up when we got a first down - or they didn't. Plus, far too many were filing out of my section with 5 minutes still left to play. I was completely unimpressed with the atmosphere.

I was there and IIRC, it was a miserable game and miserable, drizzly rain. Wasn't it a Thursday night game as well? It's dang hard to fill the stadium on Thursdays.
That was far from the only time it happened. Once, back in the 80s (I think) we shot up to 12th and had a Saturday game against NC State and 40,000 showed up. The weather was good.

Not trying to nit pik but here we are 3 days away from a home game after a big road win against an opponent who just beat a ranked team and we just cracked the polls and...

We need a fan base outside of the alumni base.

Bobby Dodd gets pretty darn loud. It's a hobby of mine to attend games at this great country's famed college football stadiums. I have been to multiple stadiums (most notably LSU's Death Valley) and Tech is not that much quieter than the rest. Now, LSU's Death Valley is in a class of its own compared to Tennessee, Alabama, Penn State, Ohio State, etc. They are the only stadium to register an earthquake via noise on the Richter scale. We will never get as loud as that stadium because they are on a different planet as far as crowd noise is considered. Read what Bear Bryant has to say about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_Valley

We get loud when it counts. Especially when you see Michael Johnson waving his arms to pump up the crowd ... what a rush!

I don't remember it raining, but yes, it was a Thursday night game. I remember I got to sit in what is now section 105 for that game --the best seats I have ever had for a GT game.

But that being said there is just too much to do in Atlanta on a nice fall afternoon. If you are younger with kids, there are very very few families who aren't tied to activities with them. That kills a lot of our alumni from coming. Why buy tickets when you can never go? The second group or side walk fans can come up with a ton of activities as well during the day.

Do other fan bases not have kids or something? We're not the only school with noon games in the fall.

If you build it they will come. When we get our program rebuilt to the level of receiving consistent national attention the people will come. Rest assured...

Somebody don't remember the 70's 80's when 20k was the norm. We are not then we are now winning more than 2 or 4 games a year (except the two or three good Curry years

Atlanta isn't the answer. Nobody wants to go to a Tech game that isn't already a Tech fan. NOBODY. The only reason they'd go is if they had free tickets. People just have better stuff to do in Atlanta on a Saturday afternoon.

It's all about rallying the base and getting what few Alumni you have in the area to bring themselves and friends to the game.

you obviously know little about atlanta and the GT alumni base and even less about marketing and sales. and exactly who are these "friends" if not people from atlanta, none of whom (according to you) want to go (NOBODY, right?). there are not enough Tech alumni to fill the stadium in Atlanta. and there are not that many that are 'fans' w/o having gone to school here

Clemson fans are fairly disillusioned this year. It's normally much better than that.

Late to the debate but wanted to add my two cents from today....

We have had our firetruck out for two games so far in front of old architecture...where the UTV Bus used to park several years ago. The first week was fine and then before GW Parking told us we weren't allowed to park there, etc etc. We kindly moved though begrudgingly.

Today I call to try to clear it up and ask for permission. The Parking Director's secretary literally yells at me for calling and asking for such a thing and refuses to help and instead passes me to the Enforcement officer who states its not his ultimatum to tell us we can't park up on the concrete pad in front of old architecture. (Even though the SOB was the one who told us to move?!?) I then decide to call a woman in planning/space who is helpful and again says its not up to their office. She agrees to call Parking to give us the ok and let them know and instead the MF-er at parking makes up a story that there have been multiple complaints addressed to him because of us. I then receive a call from the lady in planning who informs me we can park there but only if we don't make excessive noise (?) because of the bogus story and that they reserve the right to kick us out at any time without cause. Additionally she says that parking has stated that there is potential damage to the concrete....which is also a total lie.

In sum I know some will say "you should park like everyone else" or "you got what you want" but thats not really the issue. What Tech tries to do is effectively stiffle any school spirit or enthusiasm. We let any and every person who comes by on the truck, around it, pass out beers, etc. We clean up and attend every home game and instead I spent 2 hours today being yelled at as a grown man and having made up charges levied against me....as an Alumnus. The treatment received is terrible and uncalled for. By doing the right thing by calling and clearing up the situation I have now been held by the balls as a grown man. To be honest we are all dissuaded by the ridiculous hoops we have been asked to jump through and further are considering scrapping the whole idea.

I know its not the situation many are discussing but I think the stance taken by certain departments effectively thwarts many creative, good-natured attempts at the gameday experience.

If this is true, you should really e-mail Radakovich. This is the sort of thing he would want to know about.

That was more than just some five minutes. From the moment they scored that first touchdown to the point where we started driving for our go-ahead touchdown, that place was jumping. However, like I told the climpsun section next to us (in a not so polite manner) "That's real cute, but it's time for us to take this game back". That was right before the 3rd down conversion.

parking is the most hated department on campus, bar none.

There is still a lot of work to do with regards to the entire game day experience. We sold back our parking pass last year, because the cops directing traffic don't know the defense between their ass and a hole in the ground when it comes to NOT creating traffic problems. Here's a crazy idea why don't you ask the #1 Industrial Engineering Department in the world to model an appropriate queue for you as a Senior Design Project. I'll give you a hint, creating bottlenecks does not make your throughput higher.

After the BC game last year, it literally took us over an hour just to get off of campus and we were parked in the physics lot. I could have walked to MARTA 5 times in the time it took to drive a tenth of a mile . . .so I started taking MARTA and they lost the revenue of my parking pass.

Back in the day, my dad took me to an LSU game with Tech in Baton Rouge and it was something else. They were throwing whiskey bottles and chicken bones at our players. This was sometime in the early 1960s. Lotheridge was the quarterback.

The big reason why we don't have a rep of having a loud stadium is that the upper decks spill noise. But in terms of on-the-field volume, we're really, really loud. According to the Notre Dame players, BDS is every bit as loud down on the field as Penn State is.

We were also unusually loud for ND when they were there. Nevertheless, there are probably diminishing acoustic benefits when the crowd is over 40,000.

Yeah, some of their fans are total a$$holes. But I guess that statement applies to most any SEC team.

It happened that way everwhere at football games back then inc.. TECH. My dad a Tech Grad 61' used to tell me how they use to throw bottles at ND as they came on and off the field at beginning and end of the games. Then fall back to the KA house and use the miniture cannon to fire out dirt underwear and dough balls used to make the morning bisquits.. at passer by'r's (fans) in front of the house. Of course he would be standing on top of an old stump dressed as General R.E Lee giving the comand while wilding his sword. Pretty funny
