Why can't we fill up the stadium?

Firetruck...?
Have you tried pulling the truck into the same areas where the RVs park? Or is parking being dicks about that too.

You may want to charge the hoses next time the parking officials come around...

Late to the debate but wanted to add my two cents from today....

We have had our firetruck out for two games so far in front of old architecture...where the UTV Bus used to park several years ago. The first week was fine and then before GW Parking told us we weren't allowed to park there, etc etc. We kindly moved though begrudgingly.

Today I call to try to clear it up and ask for permission. The Parking Director's secretary literally yells at me for calling and asking for such a thing and refuses to help and instead passes me to the Enforcement officer who states its not his ultimatum to tell us we can't park up on the concrete pad in front of old architecture. (Even though the SOB was the one who told us to move?!?) I then decide to call a woman in planning/space who is helpful and again says its not up to their office. She agrees to call Parking to give us the ok and let them know and instead the MF-er at parking makes up a story that there have been multiple complaints addressed to him because of us. I then receive a call from the lady in planning who informs me we can park there but only if we don't make excessive noise (?) because of the bogus story and that they reserve the right to kick us out at any time without cause. Additionally she says that parking has stated that there is potential damage to the concrete....which is also a total lie.

In sum I know some will say "you should park like everyone else" or "you got what you want" but thats not really the issue. What Tech tries to do is effectively stiffle any school spirit or enthusiasm. We let any and every person who comes by on the truck, around it, pass out beers, etc. We clean up and attend every home game and instead I spent 2 hours today being yelled at as a grown man and having made up charges levied against me....as an Alumnus. The treatment received is terrible and uncalled for. By doing the right thing by calling and clearing up the situation I have now been held by the balls as a grown man. To be honest we are all dissuaded by the ridiculous hoops we have been asked to jump through and further are considering scrapping the whole idea.

I know its not the situation many are discussing but I think the stance taken by certain departments effectively thwarts many creative, good-natured attempts at the gameday experience.

Ok, so yall know how 9th Street and McMillian are One-Way *in* to the west campus dorm quad, and only 8th Street is One-Way *out*, right? Like, right across Hemphill from the police station?

I remember one time Facilities closed down 8th, to do some repairs. The cops realized it, but instead of redirecting traffic so people could get out legally, they set up a cop both McMillian and 9th to intercept ALL CARS attempting to leave the area and give them tickets, because the only out-street was closed.

That's Ma Tech for you.

Yep. I used to be on West Campus and I hated having just 1 out street. It was like a fluid mechanics problem gone wrong.

I remember I was parked on that street one time, legally (parking pass and all), and I received a phone call at 5 AM in my dorm. It was Parking telling me they were going to tow my car if I didn't move it because they wanted to plant a tree next to my car and could not access that area with the facilities truck. That is when I realized that even having a parking pass and parking legally can get you towed.

My 2 cents to beat a dead horse.

1. There are so many things to do in Atlanta especially for kids on Saturday mornings/afternoons.

2. Noon games (just about every game this year) make it very difficult for families with kids involed in youth sports. They are also not going to appeal to the fringe fan.

3. Our best attended games by fringe fans appear to be night games (especially Thursday nights) when it can be an event for the Atlanta Community.

4. It will take a generation of people growing up going to Tech games to change this.

My 2 cents to beat a dead horse.

1. There are so many things to do in Atlanta especially for kids on Saturday mornings/afternoons. yeah, but there are 52 Saturdays in a year. GT home games account for 7 (max) of them

2. Noon games (just about every game this year) make it very difficult for families with kids involed in youth sports. They are also not going to appeal to the fringe fan. Fair point. I haven't crossed that path yet but with a 3 yo boy it won't be long

3. Our best attended games by fringe fans appear to be night games (especially Thursday nights) when it can be an event for the Atlanta Community. Thurs night games are heavily attended by fans of other schools - they can still attend or watch their team play on Saturday. I usually bring coworkers with me on Thursday night games - I'm sure I'm not the only one.

4. It will take a generation of people growing up going to Tech games to change this.Which is the precise reason that the recent AJC blog about GT being a better family atmosphere than UGA doesn't bother me. Many GT fans took it as an insult but realistically the UGA fans should be the ones insulted.

Booyah.

In fact, for the past couple years U[sic]GA has been trying to do things to make their atmosphere more "family-friendly" and make them look like less of a redneck party zone. Don't think it has really been working.

For what it's worth:

***** An Email I sent to D Rad *****

Are students buzz cards scanned to check whether they're active at the
gate at the game itself? If not, I think I know your problem.

I've heard a lot of complaints from students who couldn't get tickets
this time around, because they sold out much faster than normal. I'm
no expert, but I think you might want to look at how quickly the
student tickets sold out, compared to other games, and at the size of
the blocks given out compared to other games.

I think a lot of the fraternity or organization alumni who would
normally have bought their own separate tickets may be counting on
block student seating for the game instead. It stands to reason that
might be the source of the problem.

If this is the case, you might be able to spur a bunch of these guys
who were relying on frat seating to buy their own ticket by issuing an
email memo and/or press release that buzz cards will be scanned for
student tickets at the gate for this game, and checked to ensure only
active students enter on a ticket, to prevent alumni from entering the
stadium on student tickets.

Just a thought.

***** His Response *****

Thanks Robert for the note. We are working with the Student Gov't to resolve some of those issues ... and please know we are well aware of them.

Scanning technology is available and was done at Gardner Webb, however there are still kinks in processing the large group of students into the game in a short window of time.

I have my own bias on block ticketing , but those rules are set by the Student Gov't ticketing committee.
We are planning to increase the student allocation for this game and additional tickets are available today.

Thanks again for the note.

FRATS suck for the most part and they completely exploit the block ticket loophole to get extra tickets that they dont use and thus prevent REAL student fans from coming to the game...

Honestly I see the point against blocks....kindof. I understand how it may exclude some people ultimately but I think many of you don't realize the support greek organizations offer...I'd estimate 80-85% of members attend home games. When I was in college my girlfriend always used a student ticket though she didn't go to Tech but at least she used a ticket vs. not going. I think there is just as much an argument to be made against non-greeks because so few attend games at all. You can't complain about not getting a ticket if this is your first time trying. Also I can't tell you how many times the ticket office screwed us on tickets and would give us 2/3 or 3/4 of the vouchers turned in. At the end of the day its fans in the stands even if they're not always active students. I went plenty of times on student tickets as an alumni and I guarantee I cared more than the nerd in the jorts and anime tshirt

I guess if you consider arriving in the 2nd quarter, leaving after the 3rd quarter, and talking to each other during the short time they're there instead of watching the game supporting GT football then you're right...

That's really no different from any other group of students and true of most fans in general if its not a huge game. Any sport, any fanbase, game, etc has the same problem.

I agree about frat's inability to show up on time. When I was at Tech, I was in a frat and was never late for a home football game. However, our block would rarely fill up before the start of the 2nd quarter. Frats use football games as a party/social event, so instead of watching the game they use the first quarter to down a few more drinks, which is a tradition I really wish we could change to mimic such schools as Virginia Tech which is packed as their team runs out of the tunnel. Frats are a major factor, however, in providing the atmosphere or the 12th man if you will. When the frats really get into the game, the house will be rockin. I've sat in most parts of Bobby Dodd stadium and no where was as loud as the front row of the North Stands with the frats yelling at my back. That's where I sat when Notre Dame came to town and it was absolutely deafening.

There is definitely a flaw in the Block Seating system which results in some students not getting tickets to big games. The reason the Block seating system works and is utilized is consistency. Frats show up and support Tech football more consistenly than any other organization outside of swarm. DRad knows he wants atmosphere at the football games, so the last thing he wants to do is keep frat guys from sitting next to fellow fraternity members and raising hell. I do not condone the swearing and chunking stuff on the field that some fraternity members think is a part of their gameday experience, but they are an important part of the game/crowd.

If you are not in an organization and are forced to miss a game because you didn't get a ticket, then I honestly hate it for you, but tough sh*t really. Join swarm. Don't stand outside the stadium holding up a sign that says "Dan Radakovich stole my ticket" like a coward. Pay the $20 and join a club that takes advantage of the block seating. If you're too cheap to pay $20 to ensure you get your season tickets then don't cry to me when you watch the biggest game of the year from the dorm room.

Preach it brother...but I do swear profusely and like to pick fights with UGA fans when they sit in the student section during that game.

In the 70's, the student section was first come first served. Just show your id and you were in. The frats met at the gate and went in together to sit together, but we were also at the games before kickoff.

I think that noise is attributed more to the proximity to the Swarm and the band then to the frat block next to them. I always liked the South end better, because of the lack of fraternity blocks. You still got large numbers of frat kids trying to reserve seating for their friends, and that to me was bull**** as well. Most of them were the guys that were sitting down by the 3rd quarter because they were too drunk to make it to the end of the game. And they weren't very loud, and just as prone to start a fight with another Tech student as they were to start a fight with a Dawg.
