Will CPJ's offense bury GT football in the long run?

Serious question. Top recruits don't want to play in the offense and defense suffers because they have to practice against it. I know many of you will say that we never got top recruits anyway but that is not really true. There have been years during the Ross, O'Leary and Gailey regimes where we scored on a few top players (Donnie Davis - #1 ranked QB in 1991, Calvin, Gailey's '07 class, etc.) Don't see that with CPJ.

Exactly. It will bury us for four years or so after he leaves, assuming we don't stick with the option. But it's silly to think it would bury us in "the long run".

Top recruits are dumb and don't want to/can't pass a watered down calculus class. The offense doesn't keep the good players from coming, the school does a good job of that on it's own.

There are many possible factors in our second-rate recruiting, the offense is just one. It's oversimplifying to just blame things on the offense. For example, our recruiting staff is less than many other programs.

We've landed a number of highly recruited players under Johnson: Stephen Hill, Shamire Devine, Justin Thomas. So we do occasionally get top players under Johnson too.

There are several positives for the future of our recruiting:
- Stansbury is planning to increase recruiting staff.
- Adidas
- New locker rooms

And let's face it, we didn't get a lot out of most of those guys. There's the canard that big time D recruits don't want to come here because they don't want to practice against this offense - which they don't once the middle of August rolls around.

That's plenty of highly rated recruits on D. When you have players that highly rated and don't get good results, it's either coaching, development, or talent evaluation. All of which comes back to the coaches.

We also were close on Gnonkonde, Flowers, and Tuitt, all of whom turned out to be studs. In Gnonkonde's case, we know the issue was academics not the offense. Would be interesting to know what it was with Flowers and Tuitt, but I doubt it was the offense.

So the offense practices against no one? I get what you are saying that the defense practices against a simulated version of the offense they will be playing against, once a game plan is put in place for the week's opponent. But they most definitely practice against the offense

I don’t see the TO burying GT in the long run. While it’s true that the offense can be a deterrent for certain potential recruits, on both sides of the ball, and valid points have been made in regard to the lack of top tier recruits under CPJ as compared to Chan, O’Leary, and Ross, the argument can be made that CPJ has been the most successful head coach at GT since Dodd -including Ross and the MNC.

I’m not an alum, but I do understand the rigors of being a student at GT -it’s got to be tough to be a student-athlete at GT -in particular football. Academics, IMO, have more to do with the minimal number of top tier recruits that the offensive system.

It looks like this is not really true, see what Swampsting posted. We've had plenty of highly recruited defensive players under PJ. It would be interesting to compare versus Chan, I think we might actually have as many 4*'s per year.
