For those who think a new coach is the answer...

I guess you could say we are on a downward trend in the same way someone can look at temperatures being higher one year over the previous year and claim that proves global warming. We are certainly having our ups and downs, but we certainly have the capability of beating anyone with the team we have on the field now. Unfortunately, for that to happen everything has to go almost perfectly, and that just isn't happening.

We're probably looking at our third year out of four of not making a bowl, when previously making a bowl was pretty much automatic for us. I don't see how it's even disputable that we're on a downward trend.

GT aspires to greatness in every endeavor it partakes in, and we have been wildly successful, more so than just about any school in history.

Why the hell should we accept continuing mediocrity in athletics?

I think it's less about a new coach being the answer than it is about CPJ no longer being the answer. We're on a downward trend. It's possible another year could see improvement, but it's also possible we just fall further behind.

Exactly. Nobody ever really talks about the risk of keeping a coach. CPJ has never had to clean up a mess of his own making and he is at the twilight of his career even in a best-case. I think the risk of him not being able to turn it around is substantial.

Off-topic gripe. Why does everything have to go perfectly for us to win a game? Why can Duke have 3 turnovers and win comfortably?

Well one of their turnovers was in garbage time, and deep in our territory. All of there turnovers were on our end of the field I believe. One was close to midfield, but the other two were in our territory.

All of our turnovers occurred on our end of the field. Two inside the red zone.

Oh I get that. And there's really no defending the non-bowl seasons.

I would also mention that Auburn was 3-9 in 2012 and finished the regular season at 6-6 in 2015.

This is what UMd fans thought about Fridge. They even bounced him as defending ACC COY. If we part ways with CPJ, I just want a plan in place on how we improve. Not just ‘new coach’, but better recruiting, improved facilities, improved marketing, and some sort of identity. We have the last one right now, it just isn’t selling to prospects or fans.
This. And it'd be foolish if we didn't know the new coach when we parted ways with PJ.

I really don't see how that is possible though. Open records laws and getting approval from other schools to speak with coaches and such.

We are VERY fragile on offense. There can't be a drop of rain within 100 miles and we must make 100% of our blocks perfectly in order to win. No other team can aspire to such lofty requirements as we must.

It's a GENIUS offense.

Yes. Losing to USF, Pitt and 4 of 5 to Duke is just fine. We should just stick with that because it does so well.

And that doesn’t even include failing to become bowl eligible multiple times, which is actually a pretty good accomplishment considering how many bowls there are.

Completely agree. If fans don't think GT is capable of attracting a coach that can consistently get to bowl games...then maybe it's time to stop fielding a team.

I'd be interested to see if there are any examples out there of "home run" coaching hires that might be the template for what we could hope to achieve. Gotta be a P5 school and not the Pac10 because that conference really isn't competing at the level the rest of us are.

James Franklin, Penn State?

We won 10+ games, finished top-10 and was a couple of points from playoff in 2014.

Your 3rd sentence exactly makes my point. Their expectations are out of whack.

Fans thinking a team with losses to puke, unc, and a miracle win over gsu would ever get in the CFP really have no grasp of the system.

These are things TStan is working on. They hired additional recruiting staff last year (and need to hire more). They have that initiative going to raise $125M for new facilities. I’m not sure what the marketing plan is, but I’m sure they are working on that too.

It takes time. It took Cutliffe several years to take Duke from doormat to conference title contender. Dabo needed some years to take Clemson to the next level.

Assuming TStan can keep the funds coming in, it’ll be a few years to bring GT up to where we want it to be.

But the coaches you referenced were improving their teams while those things were happening and are improving more once they got them.

We are going in reverse order, and for every year we see games like Saturday, how many years will be added to get back to respectability?

After Eleven years (how is that not long enough?) will it be a 1 to 1 ratio? 2 years to 1 year?

Those programs are far more competitive and talented now than when those coaches got there. The same is not true for us.

I don't think there is any disagreement with that statement. The disagreement is where people are placing the blame. Lot's of choices. It's popular to blame CPJ. Others like to point to past or present GT Presidents, others think it is past or present Athletic Directors.

If we had beaten FSU and Wisconsin had beaten Ohio State in the B1G title game, we were absolutely in the playoff. First off, Duke had 9 wins and finished 2nd in the Coastal. UNC finished 3rd. Secondly, we finished the season with consecutive wins over #19 Clemson and #9 UGA, narrowly lost to #4 FSU that was in the playoff, and then slaughtered #7 Mississippi State.

No matter how much you want to öööö on the successes of Georgia Tech and pretend like they don't exist, they're still there. We finished 7th as it was, even losing the ACCCG. That was EASILY the best Georgia Tech team since 1990.

Why do you feel the need to disparage Georgia Tech's success to justify firing the coach? The 4 year stretch of 2015-2018 should be enough.

Malzahn didn't take over until 2013. The 3-9 season was why he was hired.

Never mind. Just saw this quote:
Then they hired Gus Malzahn and went to the national championship game his first year.
